What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Sep 25, 11:57 PM PDT, 2 hours 46 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Sep 25, 11:57 PM PDT, 2 hours 46 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1157 PM PDT Sat Sep 25 2021

.SYNOPSIS...25/1254 PM.

A cooler weather pattern will continue into early next week as a
couple of upper lows move through the region. Overnight low
clouds and fog will become more widespread across the coast and
valleys. A warming trend is expected the latter half of next week
as high pressure returns and onshore flow weakens.

&&

.SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE)...25/901 PM.

***UPDATE***

The upper level low pressure system just to our south supported
convection today, but lacked sufficient vorticity required for
heavier showers and thunderstorms. However, showers still formed
over the Antelope Valley and the L.A. Basin. Otherwise, it was a
cooler day with light winds through most of the region. Smoke from
the southern Sierra fires is blanketing San Luis Obispo and the
northwest half of Santa Barbara County this evening, as a result
of easterly flow.

Stratus has already moved into the Central Coast, Ventura County
Coast, and portions of the L.A. Coast. The LAX-DAG pressure
gradient of 4.3 mb supports the strong westerly push, and will
trend stronger into Sunday and Monday. Expecting stratus to push
into the Santa Barbara south coast as the eddy spins up, through
the plains and may even reach lower portions of the San Gabriel
and San Fernando valleys. The marine layer is a similar depth as
last night (around 700 feet), but is forecast to deepen later
tonight. Winds will be light for most of the area, save some sub-
advisory level west winds in the Antelope Valley. Overnight,
upper level flow will become more northerly as the low shifts to
the east northeast over Arizona, pushing the smoke back into
Ventura and L.A. County Sunday morning. This may lead to reduced
visibilities in the Antelope Valley and foothills.

Sunday, temperatures trend even cooler with increased onshore
flow. Clouds should struggle to clear over most of the coast
waters and linger at the beaches, especially west facing
shorelines. The forecast looks on track, with minimal changes
needed.

***From Previous Discussion***

Otherwise, forecast on track for a storm-free day Sunday with
temperatures very similar to today. The marine layer should be
deep enough to reach the coastal valleys but depending on
convection today it may get too late a start to get in there.

The rest of the forecast is more or less unchanged. A little ridge
pops up Monday in between upper lows but with onshore flow
continuing to increase temperatures will either be about the same
or even slightly cooler than the weekend. Also, with no convection
the marine layer stratus should be able to fully rebound and move
into the valleys overnight.

On Tuesday the next trough arrives with a decaying cold front
moving through during the day. Not expecting any rain from it,
however, a deepening marine layer and stronger onshore flow to the
east will cool temps even further with most areas 4-8 degrees
below normal. And some morning drizzle is possible as well. It
will likely be a slow clearing day for areas south of Pt
Conception, but north of there gusty northwest flow will start up
by late morning and help scour out the marine layer. As that
northwest flow reaches the Santa Ynez Range later Tuesday expect
some gusty Sundowner winds through the passes and canyons into
southern Santa Barbara County, possibly reaching advisory levels.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...25/106 PM.

Northwest flow and cold advection from the trough moving through
should clear out the marine layer by Wednesday afternoon and leave
it clear the rest of the week. Models have been consistent showing
rapidly weakening onshore flow, and in some cases even turning
weakly offshore by Thursday and Friday. This will help warm temps
up rapidly with highs back into the 80s and 90s, even for some of
the coast. Very little change going into next weekend.

&&

.AVIATION...26/0656Z.

At 06Z, the marine layer depth was around 1100 feet deep at KLAX.
The top of the inversion was near 2900 feet with a temperature
near 21 degrees Celsius.

Moderate confidence in the current forecast coastal and valley
terminals. High confidence in the current forecast for desert
terminals. Higher confidence exists in timing, less confidence in
flight categories.

LIFR to IFR conditions should remain in place through at least
08Z, or as late as 16Z, then conditions should improve to IFR to
MVFR conditions. There is a moderate (30-50 percent) chance of
MVFR conditions lingering at most coastal terminals later than
forecast or through the day on Sunday. An early return should be
expected for coastal terminals on Sunday evening.

KLAX...IFR conditions should improve to the MVFR category between
08Z and 12Z. There is a 40 percent chance of MVFR conditions
lingering until as least 20Z, with a lesser chance of MVFR
conditions lingering through the day. Should VFR conditions
develop, MVFR conditions could return as soon as 01Z or as late
as 03Z.

KBUR...IFR conditions will spread into KBUR as soon as 07Z or as
late as 10Z. Conditions should improve to the MVFR category
between 10Z and 14Z. There is a 40 percent chance of MVFR
conditions lingering until 18Z.

&&

.MARINE...25/948 PM.

High confidence that winds will remain below Small Craft Advisory
(SCA) level through Sunday. Winds will strengthen across outer
waters Monday, with a 60% chance of SCA level winds developing
over the waters north of Pt Sal Monday morning, extending to the
outer waters north of San Nicolas Island by Monday evening. SCA
level winds are likely to last from Monday through Thursday. There
is a 30-40% chance of GALE FORCE wind gusts at times across the
outer waters Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday morning.

For the inner waters north of Pt. Sal, winds will remain below SCA
levels through Monday afternoon. SCA level winds are likely
Monday evening through Wednesday afternoon. There is also a 20%
chance of SCA conds Wednesday night and Thursday.

For the SBA Channel and southern inner waters, winds will remain
below SCA levels through Thursday. There is a 40% chance of SCA
level wind gusts Tuesday evening for the western SBA Channel.

&&

.LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...NONE.
PZ...NONE.

&&

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (TUE-SAT).

Gusty northwest winds are possible across San Luis Obispo and
Santa Barbara Counties and adjacent coastal waters late Tuesday
through Wednesday.
