.SYNOPSIS...08/807 PM.

Expect cooler temperatures this week with overnight and morning
low clouds and fog in coastal and valley areas this evening.
There is a chance of light precipitation at times across the
region late Thursday through Saturday as an upper level low passes
near the area.

.SHORT TERM (MON-THU)...08/841 PM.

***UPDATE***

No significant changes to the forecast. The deepening marine layer
and steady onshore push is allowing low clouds (with minimal to no
fog, unlike last night) to surge inland this evening. These clouds
are already pushing into some valleys, and will continue to
advance into the mountain foothills by morning...although it will
be very hard to monitor with the ample high clouds obscuring the
view from space. With the deepening marine layer, some drizzle is
possible. Temperatures will drop tomorrow without surprise as a
result.

***From Previous Discussion***

Overall, 12Z models in good agreement through the short term
period. At upper levels, weak ridge will persist over the area
through tonight with a weak trough moving across the area Tuesday
night/Wednesday morning then ridging again Wednesday afternoon
through Thursday. Near the surface, weak onshore flow will prevail
with some weak northerly flow developing Tuesday night.

Forecast-wise, main issue in the short term will be the marine
layer stratus. With lowering H5 heights tonight and continued
onshore gradients, expect the marine inversion to deepen. So, by
Tuesday morning, will expect widespread stratus across the coasts
and valleys and even pushing into the lower coastal slopes. Also
with the deepening inversion, some patchy drizzle will be possible
tonight/Tuesday morning south of Point Conception. Stratus should
dissipate back to the coast Tuesday afternoon. With the weak
northerly flow anticipated Tuesday night, stratus should be
generally be limited to the coastal plains of Ventura/LA counties
and interior sections of San Luis Obispo/Santa Barbara counties
Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. For Wednesday night and
Thursday, do not anticipated much, if any, stratus development.
Other than the marine layer stratus, varying amounts of high
clouds will drift overhead through Tuesday night, resulting in
partly to mostly cloudy skies for the area.

As for winds, the onshore gradients will generate some gusty
southwesterly winds this afternoon and Tuesday afternoon across
interior sections. However, speeds should remain below advisory
levels. For Tuesday night through Thursday, there will be some
weak northerly gradients developing. So, will anticipate some
locally gusty northerly winds in the usual spots (Santa Ynez Range
and I-5 Corridor). At this time, do not anticipate the northerly
winds to reach advisory levels.

As for temperatures, will expect a cool Tuesday for the area due
to the onshore gradients and significant marine influence. For
Wednesday and Thursday, a gradual warming trend is anticipated
with less marine influence and rising H5 heights and thicknesses.

.LONG TERM (FRI-MON)...08/204 PM.

Overall, 12Z models have the same general idea, but definitely
differ in the details. One upper level flow will move over the
area Thursday and Friday, followed by another upper level low on
Saturday night and Sunday.

For the Thursday night/Friday system, the ECMWF moves the upper
low south/southeast across the coastal waters while the GFS has
the low tracking southeast over the land. So, the GFS indicates a
bit better chance of precipitation for the area than the ECMWF.
However, either solution does not generate much precipitation for
the area. Will keep with the idea of low chance/slight chance POPs
for this time frame. QPF amounts, if any, will be very light with
most areas potentially receiving under 0.10 inches. Snow levels
look to remain quite high, around 7000 feet or higher. So, no
significant snowfall issues are anticipated.

After a brief respite Friday night/Saturday morning, the next
system is forecast to impact the area Saturday afternoon through
Sunday. ECMWF is a bit faster with this system than the GFS, but
both models indicate some precipitation chances between Saturday
afternoon and Sunday afternoon. Looking at QPF progs, this system
may produce a bit more widespread shower activity across the area.
However, precipitation total will be light with initial estimates
for under 0,25 inches for the area. Snow levels with this system
will be lower, ranging from around 6500 feet on Saturday, but
dropping to around 4500 feet Saturday night and Sunday. So,
depending on the amount of shower activity, there could be some
snow issues at the lower mountain elevations. Will need to watch
this possibility over the next few days.

.AVIATION...09/0509Z.

At 05Z over KLAX, the marine layer was 1900 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was at 3600 feet and 13 degrees Celsius.

High confidence of generally MVFR and locally IFR CIGS at all
sites through Tuesday morning (except KPMD KWJF), with much higher
cats compared to last night. Moderate confidence in timing, plus
or minus 3 hours. There is a chance for LIFR FG at KSMX (40%)
KSBP (20%) KSBP (20%), with little to no chance at other sites.
Relatively poor clearing likely in the afternoon. With ample high
clouds expected, satellite detection of low clouds will be nearly
impossible which will make TAF updates challenging.

KLAX...High confidence in MVFR CIGS most common, with a 20% chance
for brief IFR 09-15Z. No chance of LIFR. Moderate confidence in
timing plus or minus 3 hours. Southeast winds likely tonight, but
most likely will stay below 8 kt.

KBUR...High confidence in IFR CIGS common 09-15Z, and MVFR CIGS
common otherwise through 20Z. Chance for LIFR is less than 10%
Moderate confidence in timing plus or minus 3 hours.

.MARINE...08/902 PM.

Fairly calm and under Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conditions will
continue through Tuesday night, with a mixture of small long
period and short period swells. NW winds will increase above SCA
from the Central Coast to San Nicolas Island on Wednesday before
relaxing on Thursday. There is a 20% chance of SCA winds impacting
the West Central Santa Barbara Channel. Otherwise, short period
seas will build everywhere Wednesday into Thursday from these
winds, including the inner waters. A series of storm systems will
bring widespread gusty winds (20-30 KT at times) and building seas
(generally 6-12 feet) with short periods, peaking Friday through
Sunday.
