What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this small craft advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Los Angeles, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this small craft advisory went out at Aug 1, 2:05 AM PDT, 1 hour 1 minute earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Aug 1, 2:05 AM PDT, 1 hour 1 minute before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
205 AM PDT Sun Aug 1 2021

.SYNOPSIS...31/909 PM.

A quiet weather pattern will continue into next week. Skies will
be mostly clear except for the night through morning low clouds
and fog along the coasts. High temperatures away from the coast
each day will be a few degrees above normal, peaking Tuesday and
Wednesday. Gusty Sundowner winds are likely for Santa Barbara
County Monday through Wednesday nights.

&&

.SHORT TERM (TDY-TUE)...31/932 PM.

The latest satellite imagery shows an upper-level ridge of high
pressure over the Rocky Mountain region this evening, while a weak
upper-level trough of low pressure near 35N and 130W lifts out to
the north. The high pressure system will recenter and reestablish
over southern California Sunday and remain in place for the early
half of next week. 500 mb heights will climb over the next couple
of days and bring a warming trend to the area, especially away
from the coast.

The current skies show mostly clear skies over the area this
evening. A few patches of stratus clouds are clinging to the
beaches along the Central Coast and a few patches of middle to
high level clouds are streaming north over the Southland.
Instability with the trough and drier air aloft mixing down could
have scoured the marine layer deck and brought more clearing than
expected. The marine layer still remains in place in RAOB
soundings. A depth of 1100 feet exists at KVBG and 700 feet deep
at KLAX this evening. Low clouds and fog should return late
tonight and/or early Sunday morning, especially along the Central
Coast. Any low clouds and fog will likely be dense in some spots
as the marine layer depth will remain shallow as the ridge center
settles into the region.

An update will be issued shortly for cloud cover and temperatures.

***From Previous Discussion***

Most of southwest CA will see very little overall change in the
weather with a similar marine layer between 800-1200 feet for
Sunday morning generating low clouds and fog (2-5 mile
visibilities) late at night and in the morning over coastal areas.
Temperatures will be similar to today for Sunday afternoon. Would
expect only slight changes to the marine layer for Monday
morning, however, a 596dm high pressure center builds over
southern NV and southern CA with temperatures increasing for all
areas through Tuesday. Highs are likely to push above 100 degrees
in hotter valleys, mountains, and deserts by then with low
humidities continuing. Onshore pressure gradients increase to 6 mb
by Tuesday afternoon bringing typical gusty southwest winds
through the Highway 14 corridor into the Antelope Valley as well.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...31/143 PM.

Ensembles and deterministic models all in agreement to hold onto
high pressure over southern CA through Wednesday night, followed
by a weak low pressure system sliding across northern CA into
Thursday. Dry and warm conditions will continue across the area
with peak heating likely for most areas on Tuesday and Wednesday
afternoons. Readings for the warmest interior valleys and deserts
will be 102-105 degrees, about 5 degrees from record territory.
Other inland areas will see highs in the mid 80 to mid 90s with
the coastal strip remaining in the 70s to lower 80s.

Sundowner winds will likely remain an impact for southern Santa
Barbara County with gusty northwest to northeast winds Tuesday and
Wednesday evenings/nights. In addition, the onshore pressure
gradient from LAX-DAG reaches +8mb or greater later in the week to
keep locally gusty afternoon southwest winds for areas of the San
Gabriel Mountains and Antelope Valley.

Temperatures will be trending cooler across all of southwest CA
Thursday through Saturday as the upper level flow becomes more
westerly and high pressure sags to our south. No monsoon moisture
is expected through next week.

&&

.AVIATION...01/0635Z.

At 0505Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 700 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was at 1900 ft with a temperature of 28 degrees C.

High confidence in the desert and valley TAFs and low confidence
in coastal TAFs where there is a 40 percent chc of no low clouds
at sites where low clouds are forecast and a 40 percent chc of IFR
cigs 12Z-16Z at sites with no low cloud fcst.

KLAX...Low confidence in TAF through 17Z then high confidence.
There is a 40 percent chc of no low clouds at all through the
period. If low clouds do arrive the arrival and dissipation times
could be off by +/- 1 hour. If low clouds do arrive there is a 30
percent chc of 1/2SM VV002 conds 12Z-15Z. Good confidence there
will be no east wind component greater than 3 kt.

KBUR...High confidence in CAVU TAF.

&&

.MARINE...01/204 AM.

High confidence in very short period and choppy seas over most
waters, including nearshore, through most of next week. Periods
between 5 and 8 seconds will be common. Heights will be fairly
small through Sunday, then build some through the week. A
noticeable long period south swell will mix in starting late
Sunday.

Moderate confidence in low-end Small Craft Advisory (SCA) wind
gusts around 25 knots late this afternoon through the overnight
hours from Point Conception to San Nicolas Island. There is a
40% chance for SCA level gusts across the western portion of the
Santa Barbara Channel this evening, and a 30% chance for the
nearshore waters off Los Angeles and Orange Counties. Similar
conditions are likely on Monday afternoon. These winds should
shift focus more to the Central Coast through San Nicolas Island
Tuesday. By Wednesday or Thursday, there is a chance for Gale
Conditions. These winds will further amplify the persistent short
period seas.

&&

.LOX WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
CA...NONE.
PZ...Small Craft Advisory in effect from 3 PM this afternoon to 3
AM PDT Monday for zones 673-676. (See LAXMWWLOX).

&&

.HAZARD POTENTIAL OUTLOOK (TUE-SAT).

Gusty Sundowner winds will impact the canyons and passes below
mountains in south Santa Barbara County Tuesday and Wednesday
nights. Hottest temperatures are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday
with a moderate risk of heat stress for interior valleys and
deserts.
