.SYNOPSIS...26/255 AM.

Weaker offshore flow will remain in place through this morning. By
this afternoon, northerly winds will develop across portions of the
forecast area through Saturday. By Saturday evening, a moderate
to potentially strong Santa Ana wind event develops and continues
through Sunday. Winds will weaken some early next week with a
slight chance for precipitation by midweek.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...26/248 AM.

Latest GOES-W Fog Product Imagery indicated clear skies across
the forecast area this morning. LAX-DAG surface gradient was -2.6mb
which was trending +3 MB weaker from 24-hour ago. Locally gusty
winds were occuring around Malibu Hills and the foothills above
Porter Ranch with max gusts around 45 mph. The weaker offshore
flow will continue through this morning. No advisories are in
effect this morning, but that will change by this afternoon.

Synoptically, Strong high pressure aloft remains parked over the
Eastern Pacific with broad NW flow moving across California this
morning. An upper level disturbance within the flow will start to
dive south from WA/OR in the typical inside slider track across
the Great Basin this evening, then digging sharply south into AZ
by Sunday morning. As the trough pushes south, cold air behind the
trough will settle in across the Great Basin creating an offshore
gradient which will allow for a gusty moderate to possibly strong
Santa Ana wind event to develop Saturday night through Sunday.

For today, weak to locally moderate offshore winds will linger
across the L.A. and Ventura County Mountains and a few wind prone
valley passes this morning. Meanwhile, locally gusty NE winds
will be affecting the coastal foothills across the Central Coast
from the Santa Lucia Mountains. There will be local gusts to 40
mph in some of the foothill locations, but should be less across
the more populated Central Coast this morning.

By this afternoon, a northerly gradient will strengthen due to
the proximity of the upper trough pushing south into NV/UT. Gusty
NW to N winds will develop across the I-5 Corridor, Santa Clarita
Valley and Santa Barbara County South Coast and adjacent Santa
Ynez Mountain Range this afternoon and continue through tonight
and much of Saturday. Wind advisories will be in effect for these
areas through late through Saturday evening. There may be a few
hours when winds diminish some. Also, gusty NW to W winds will
develop across the Antelope Valley this afternoon and overnight
hours, so a Wind Advisory will be in effect at noon today through
midnight. Winds will likely filter in across the San Fernando
Valley later this evening and into west L.A. tonight. Will let the
day shift look closer to see if the San Fernando Valley will need
a wind advisory. For now, expect gusts to 30 mph through the 405
and 5 Corridors. Stronger winds will be possible in the foothills.

As mentioned earlier, the base of the upper trough will reach AZ
Sunday morning. The combination of a strengthening offshore surface
gradient peaking between -6 to -7.5 MB Sunday morning, and good cold
air advection with decent upper support will possibly bring similar
wind speeds we received yesterday, maybe a tad weaker. Therefore,
High Wind Watches were issued for the L.A./Ventura County Mountains
including the Santa Monica Range and the Santa Clarita Valley starting
10 PM Saturday evening through Sunday afternoon where gusts between
55 and 65 will be possible. As the winds shift to the NE late Saturday
evening, Wind Advisories will likely need to be issued for Ventura
County and much of L.A. County as well through the Sunday time frame.
Preliminary gusts expected for the coast and valleys will be between
40 and 55 mph. This will be a slightly colder wind event, so higher
resolution models were indicating the San Gabriel Valley could see
more widespread north to northeast winds as well. Offshore winds
will weaken quite a bit Sunday evening into Monday morning.

Overall, expect clear skies through the short term forecast period with
a possibilty of patchy low clouds and fog around Long Beach Saturday
morning due to a relatively weak Catalina Eddy. As far as temperatures,
There will be significant warming as the cooler air from yesterday's
Santa will moderate warmer, especially across inland areas. The Antelope
Valley and lower mountain elevations will see the best warming up
10-12 degrees with 3 to 8 degrees of warming across LA/Ventura Counties
and a few degrees of warming for other areas to the north. The warming
will be short lived as 3-8 degrees of widespread cooling is expected
Saturday as the upper trough approaches closer with onshore flow and
northerly flow across the area. An additional 2-4 degrees of cooling
will occur Sunday as the cooler air advects in with the Santa Ana winds.
Highs will remain slightly warmer than normal across coast and coastal
valleys due to the offshore flow, but cooler across interior locations.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...25/159 PM.

For the extended, deterministic models and their ensembles
continue to diverge greatly with the extended forecast. For
Monday, both the GFS/ECMWF indicate dry conditions for the area.
However, the GFS would indicate a return of onshore flow which
would bring cooler temperatures while the ECMWF still indicates
some weak offshore flow which would keep temperatures a bit
warmer.

For Tuesday/Wednesday, the GFS and ECMWF offer up vastly differing
forecast ideas. The GFS develops an upper low off the West Coast
on Tuesday and moves in inland across the area on Wednesday. With
this scenario, temperatures would remain cooler with onshore flow
and more cloud cover. Also, the GFS would bring a decent rain
event to the area on Wednesday. Conversely, the ECMWF drops a weak
inside slider across the Great Basin. This solution would mean a
slight chance of some mountain showers on Tuesday and weak to
potentially moderate offshore winds Tuesday/Wednesday. The
respective models have been consistent with their differing
solutions, so forecast confidence remains quite low. With the
afternoon forecast, will indicate a slight chance of showers
across the mountains as well as eastern LA county on Tuesday and
a slight chance of rain all areas on Wednesday. Hopefully, models
will start to converge on a agreeable solution.

For Thursday, both models indicate dry conditions as a weak upper
level ridge sets up around the area.

At 06Z at KLAX, there was no marine layer.

High confidence in all CAVU TAFs. There is a chance of moderate
low-level wind shear and turbulence at Central Coast terminals
between 09Z and 18Z.

KLAX...High confidence in CAVU TAF. Any east wind will likely
remain less than 5 knots.

KBUR...High confidence in CAVU TAF.

High confidence in Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level winds
continuing across the outer waters from the Central Coast to San
Nicolas Island through this afternoon. Winds are expected to
strengthen further this afternoon into the evening, and there is
a 60-70% chance of Gale force gusts across these waters. Gales may
weaken some overnight/early Saturday, but are expected to
restrengthen Saturday afternoon. Thus a Gale Warning will be in
effect from 3pm today to 9pm Saturday. For the nearshore waters
along the Central Coast, good confidence that winds will remain
below SCA level through this afternoon, then SCA level winds are
likely Friday evening through Saturday evening. Winds are
expected to drastically weaken to below SCA level by early Sunday
across these waters (except from the Channel Islands to San
Nicolas Island which will be explained below). In addition to
winds, SCA level hazardous seas over 10 feet are expected to
return this afternoon through at least Saturday night. There is
moderate confidence that seas may exceed 15 feet during the peak
tonight into Saturday morning.

Across the inner waters south of Point Conception, high confidence
that winds and seas will remain below SCA level through Saturday
night. However, there is a 50-60% chance of SCA level northwest
winds across the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel
during the afternoon and evening today and Saturday. Late Saturday
night into Sunday morning, moderate to high confidence in more
SCA level northeast winds from Point Mugu to Santa Monica
(possibly reaching to at least as far out as Santa Cruz Island)
and south of Palos Verdes out to Catalina Island.

.BEACHES...26/150 AM.

A large northwest swell will traverse through the coastal waters
this afternoon, peaking tonight through Saturday morning, then
subside on Sunday. The period is not very long, but the expected
swell heights will likely bring high surf conditions to west to
northwest-facing beaches of the Central Coast tonight through
Sunday morning. Large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet with local
sets to 16 feet are likely across these favored shores. In
addition, there will likely be dangerous rip currents. A High Surf
Advisory has been issued and will be effective from 6pm this
evening through 10am Sunday. Good confidence that the Ventura
Coast will remain below high surf criteria, but can't rule out
some local sets to 7 feet.
