Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or
stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly

High pressure aloft will bring warm and dry weather, mainly
inland, through Friday. There will be gusty northerly winds
across southern Santa Barbara County and perhaps the Interstate 5
corridor through Thursday night. There is the potential for a
rain event early next week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...03/937 AM.

***UPDATE***

There have been a fair number of subtle changes in the weather
scenario into Friday.

Unfortunately, the amplifying ridge over southwest California has
considerably lowered the depth of the marine layer to below 1000
ft, resulting in fairly widespread dense fog across most coastal
sections and a couple of valleys. The dense fog advisory has been
appropriately expanded to accommodate these developments and the
zones have also been updated for the dense fog. The dense fog
advisory is set to expire at 10 am this morning.

Sounding data confirms a very shallow marine layer with the depth
along the central coast around 800 feet and as low as 500 feet
near the LA airport. Capping the shallow marine layer is a strong
temperature inversion, which could easily force the marine clouds
to hug the immediate coast during the afternoon. This could
complicate the high temperature forecast in the immediate coastal
sections with much cooler temperatures within a few miles of the
coast. Therefore, adjustments have been made to lower temperatures
along the immediate coast for today and tomorrow. The spectre of
dense fog may revisit mainly coastal sections again tonight
before the ridge aloft flattens on Thursday. Much warmer
temperatures are still expected today through Friday away from the
coast due to weak to moderate offshore flow from the north today,
gradually shifting to the northeast by early Friday.

Another highlight already in place is a wind advisory for the
south coast of Santa Barbara County and Santa Ynez Mountains from
6 pm this evening through 6 am Friday. Although the NAM12 is
backing off a bit on the strength of the LAX-BFL pressure
gradient for late this week, the SBA-BFL pressure gradient still
peaks at -5.2 mb Thursday evening, which is quite respectable
indeed. With better gradients shifting to areas a bit to the
northwest, the suggestion is that the greatest impact of the winds
may be over San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. Still, we
will keep one eye on the situation for the I-5 corridor since the
GFS insists on decent LAX-BFL gradients, just in case.

A weak frontal system will take aim on the extreme northern
portion of the central coast for tomorrow morning, however, there
is little in the way of atmospheric cooling and it looks like the
main impact will be to increase northerly winds in its wake.

Finally, the NAM12 has definitely backed off from the stronger
offshore flow expected for Friday morning south of Point
Conception. This places any Santa Ana winds in LA/Ventura counties
on Friday morning in some doubt for now.

***From Previous Discussion***

The cloud cover this morning is following a much more classic
marine layer pattern than previous days. Low clouds are firmly
established along the Central Coast into the Santa Ynez Valley as
well as the Salinas Valley. Additionally, low clouds cover most
of the Ventura County coastal plain and much of the LA basin.
There is an indication of a weak eddy, and this could help push
clouds into the Santa Barbara area as well. An upper-level ridge
over the region will continue to amplify today, and this will
contribute to a strengthening inversion. Despite offshore trends
and actual weak offshore flow, the strong inversion may inhibit
clouds from clearing out of coastal areas. The current forecast is
more optimistic, but would not be surprised if some beaches remain
cloudy through the afternoon. The air mass will warm under the
building ridge, and combined with weak offshore flow from the
northeast temperatures will warm several degrees over yesterday.
Temperatures hovering around 80 will be likely across the valleys,
and possibly exceed 80 over LA and Ventura Counties. Northerly
gradients are expected to strengthen tonight, leading to another
round of gusty sundowner winds across southern Santa Barbara
County. A Wind Advisory has been issued for this area, starting at
6pm this evening with gusts up to 45 mph likely through the
favored passes and canyons mainly west of Refugio.

On Thursday, the ridge will be flattened as a trough moves into
the Pacific Northwest. The morning will start off like many days
with the marine layer present: low clouds will likely cover most
of the coastal areas. However, the gusty sundowner winds will
likely keep most of the Santa Barbara South Coast clear. The tail
end of a weakening front will graze northern San Luis Obispo
County during the early morning. It is possible this front could
produce a trace or couple hundredths of drizzle over far northern
SLO County, but the most likely scenario will be a few high clouds
streaming overhead. Temperatures may cool a few degrees,
particularly over northern areas, but it should remain warm. Following
the frontal passage, northerly gradients will increase as surface
high pressure develops over the San Joaquin Valley (LAX-BFL and
SBA-BFL both forecast around -5 to -6 mb Thursday night). Colder
air behind the front will bring better cold advection leading to
increased confidence in widespread gusty northerly winds across
the region starting Thursday afternoon then peaking Thursday
night. Advisory level winds will be likely over southern Santa
Barbara County and through the I-5 corridor. During the overnight
hours and into early Friday morning, winds are expected to shift
northeasterly and move the focus for potential advisory level
winds over the inland Santa Ana wind corridor and the Santa Lucia
range.

The gusty northerly winds on Thursday night should keep skies
mainly clear, except bank some clouds over the northern mountain
slopes. An eddy may bring some marine layer stratus to southern LA
County. Friday will be another warm day, especially across LA and
Ventura Counties as the northeast flow will kick temperatures up
a little more.

.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...03/334 AM.

After a nice and warm end of the work week, the weekend will bring
along a cooling trend as broad troughing returns to the Western
US. There will be 4 to 8 degrees of cooling on Saturday and then 3
to 6 degrees on Sunday. The increasing cyclonic flow and lowering
heights will also help deepen the marine layer. Low clouds will
make their return to all the coastal areas, and also some of the
lower coastal valleys. Gusty north to northwest winds may
continue through the weekend, but will not be as strong as
Thursday and Friday.

The most significant aspect of the forecast for the extended
period will be the potential rain event early next week. The
current 00Z deterministic runs of the GFS and ECMWF are in far
better agreement than the runs from 24 hours ago. Now the
deterministic ECMWF is following along with the idea the GFS has,
with a chance for rain Monday night into Tuesday. The ensembles
still show a fairly large spread in timing and intensity, so
confidence remains low. More than half of the ensembles for both
models indicate a chance of rain north of Point Conception, so
there is a pretty good chance of some amount of rain across the
northern half of our area. A little less confidence across the
southern half, but since many ensemble members indicate some
precip a chance still remains. The forecast will more or less
resemble the NBM, with chance PoPs over northern areas by Monday
afternoon and evening, then spreading to southern areas by Tuesday
afternoon. In terms of rainfall amounts, the ensemble means are
showing around a tenth of an inch across LA and Ventura Counties,
then around a quarter to half inch north of Point Conception.
However, as a low confidence forecast at days 6 and 7, this will
definitely be subject to change through the week. The main
takeaway is that there will be a chance of measurable rain early
next week but it is too soon to say when and how much.

Aside from the chance of rain, the new work week will be
characterized by cloudy skies and temperatures back to several
degrees below normal.

At 18Z, the marine layer was 800 feet deep at KLAX. The top of
the inversion was at 1800 feet at 20 degrees Celsius.

High confidence for 18Z desert TAFs and low to moderate
confidence for all others. Timing of cat changes could be off by
+/- 2 hours. KSBP and KSBA has a 30% chance of no cig arrival.
There is a 30% chance of KOXR clearing.

KLAX... Low confidence in 18Z TAF through 00Z, with IFR (BKN008)
cigs or MVFR vis (4SM) equally possible. High confidence in cigs
returning between 00-04Z. With similar IFR/LIFR (OVC003-006, 1-4SM)
conditions as the previous 24 hours. High confidence that there
will be no significant easterly wind component.

KBUR... Moderate confidence in 18Z TAF. There is a 40% chance of
the MVFR vis not happening.

.MARINE...03/941 AM.

There is dense fog across most waters, with the potential of
lasting through the day in some areas. Moderate confidence of the
dense fog reforming tonight into Thursday.

High confidence in widespread Small Craft Advisory (SCA) winds for
the outer waters from the central coast south to San Nicolas
Island through at least the weekend. There may be a brief lull
north of Point Sal early Thursday. There is a 30 percent chance
of GALES on Thursday afternoon and evening.

For the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel, SCA level
winds will form this afternoon. Moderate confidence that these
winds will persist through Thursday afternoon and stay confined to
the western half of the Channel.

There is a 10 percent chance of SCA Santa Ana winds south of
Ventura Friday morning.

Seas will likely build to hazardous levels, possibly surpassing
10 feet late Thursday into Friday. While seas will come down Friday
evening, seas will likely build again to hazardous levels
Saturday evening. Short period seas will affect most waters due to
the nearby winds.
