.SYNOPSIS...21/147 PM.

Mostly quiet weather expected through Sunday. Cooler temperatures
are expected Friday with some very light rain possible for San
Luis Obispo County. A approaching storm system will bring
widespread moderate to heavy rain later Sunday night and Monday,
with minor flooding, gusty winds, and cooler conditions possible.
Warming and drying are expected the rest of next week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...21/146 PM.

Light offshore flow and a ridge aloft brought temps up 5-10
degrees from yesterday and into the low to mid 80s for the valleys
and even low to mid 70s for some coastal areas. The warm weather
will be very brief though as onshore flow returns Friday as well
as the marine layer which is expected to bring clouds onshore and
into some of the valleys by Friday morning. So Friday will be 5-10
degrees cooler than today in most coast/valley areas with some
low clouds to start.

Then really not much change for most areas through Sunday. A weak
system will move into San Luis Obispo County Friday in the early
afternoon and drop some light rain there, mostly west of the
coastal mountains and north of Morro Bay. Then as the front washes
out and reaches the north facing mountain slopes of Ventura
County and NW LA County Friday night some light upslope
precipitation is possible with snow levels above 8000'.

After that very little change in temperatures with some night and
morning low clouds and fog for most coast and valleys. And some
mid and high clouds drifting by from time to time. Some gusty
northerly winds expected in southwest Santa Barbara County each
evening, strongest Saturday evening and those will likely keep low
clouds out of most of that area.

On Sunday the leading edge of the big early season storm that will
be hitting northern California will start to bring some light
precipitation to northern SLO County but dry elsewhere through
Sunday evening.

.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...21/208 PM.

Still some differences in the arrival time of the heavier rain
(still +/- 6 hours) but in general the slow moving and heavy
precip/AR event that will be occuring over the northern half of
California will shift to a faster moving cold front that will move
through southern California late Sunday night and Monday. For our
area it's looking like a period of around 6 hours of rain with the
main front and maybe a few hours of post-frontal showers.
Northwest SLO County will likely see the highest totals given the
longer duration and favorable orientation of the coastal
mountains to the south/southwest low and mid level winds. Some
areas there in the coastal foothills could see 3 inches of rain
with this event while most coastal areas north of Pt Conception
should see around an inch to 1.5".

As the upper level jet pushes the front quickly through the area
Sunday night into Monday there will still be periods of heavy rain
but the duration will be shorter and for now the models are not
showing much if any instability. Upslope areas of southern Santa
Barbara and Ventura County could see 1.5-2" of rain but most other
areas down through LA County will be from a half to 1 inch. At
this point not expecting rain rates to exceed thresholds for
significant debris flows but some minor flooding and mud flows is
possible, especially in southern SB County.

No snow locally with this event as snow levels will stay above
10000'.

After Monday a ridge will quickly rebuild over the west coast for
dry and warmer conditions the rest of the week. Models show
gradients shifting back to lightly offshore by Tuesday. Not enough
for any significant winds but enough to help warm temps up
considerably with highs back well into the 80s by Wednesday and
Thursday.

.AVIATION...21/0626Z.

At 0445Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 400 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was around 1900 feet with a temperature of 11 C.

High Confidence in inland TAFs.

Moderate confidence in KSMX and KSBP TAFs. There is a 20 percent
chc of no clouds. Otherwise timing may be off by +/- 2hours and
cig hgt off by +/- 300 ft. Better confidence after 21Z.

Pretty good confidence in coastal TAFs KSBA and south with just a
20 percent chc of IFR cigs 11Z-17Z at any given site.

KLAX...Pretty good confidence in TAF. There is a 20 percent
chance of IFR cigs 11Z-17Z. Good confidence that any east wind
component will be under 6 kt.

KBUR...High confidence in TAF.

.MARINE...21/929 AM.

A larger than expected west swell is filling in the coastal waters
this morning, and the wave height forecast was upped as a result
through this evening. Low confidence on how large the swell will
get in the Santa Barbara Channel and Santa Monica Basin, and will
have to monitor it through the day. As a result, Small Craft
Advisories (SCA) were issued for the larger seas in some areas.

Expecting northwest winds to increase this afternoon and evening,
but now looks to be focused over the more typical area between
Point Conception and San Nicolas Island instead of a little more
widespread. SCAs are now in effect for that area as a result, and
canceled the SCA for the Santa Barbara Channel. Better confidence
that these winds will expand more into the inner waters on Friday,
including most of the Santa Barbara Channel (SCA likely) and
western half of the Santa Monica Basin (SCA possible). Short
period waves will build as a result, on top of a building longer
period swell. High confidence that this longer period swell will
go above the SCA 10 foot threshold by Friday afternoon off the
Central Coast and southward and last through Saturday. Moderate
confidence that the NW winds will be increasing during this period
as well, but should return to the more traditional areas from the
Central Coast to San Nicolas Island with less impact to the inner
waters. These winds will however generate a significant short
period wave everywhere.

A storm system is still on track to impact the area Sunday and
Monday, with a period of gusty SW winds everywhere, and a large
swell impacting all areas Sunday through Wednesday, peaking Monday
and Tuesday. During this peak, large breaking waves nearshore will
pose dangers to boats, with breaking waves possible over the Morro
Bay and Ventura Harbor entrances. Thunderstorms are not expected.

.BEACHES...21/405 AM.

Increased storm activity across the eastern Pacific Ocean is
expected late this week into early next week. This will set
the stage for stronger winds and larger swells in the coastal
waters. The large swells will impact mainly west facing beaches
beginning Friday, with a threat of High Surf conditions from the
Central Coast and southward to southern L.A. County. A High
Surf Advisory may be posted in the near future. High Surf could
potentially begin as early as Friday, lasting through the
weekend and into early next week.

While still early, the latest swell model are building a very
large west-northwest swell to around 17 feet with a 17 second
period. If this scenario develops as modeled, this could produce
locally damaging sets at Central Coast beaches on Monday and
Monday night and dangerous and life threatening surf conditions
for anyone entering the water.
