.SYNOPSIS...14/916 PM.

A cold storm system will bring light rain, low elevation snow,
and gusty winds to the area late tonight and Monday and very gusty
winds Monday afternoon and evening. It will be dry with a warming
trend Tuesday through Wednesday. Light rain chances return later
in the week, mainly for San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties.

.SHORT TERM (SUN-WED)...14/912 PM.

***UPDATE***

Light rain has begun to work its way down the coast and as of 8 pm has
dropped a few hundredths along the north coast of Monterey County.
The timing and precip rates match well with the current forecast
package and no notable changes were made in the evening update.

The primary impacts from this system will be from the wind and the
low elevation snow. Though this is a relatively weak system, the
projections indicate wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph across a wide
swath of the coastal areas as well as in the mountains and could
peak at morning commute. Low elevation snowfall totals will not
be particularly heavy but the roads are cold and that will help
the snow stick a bit easier.

Lots of stratocumulus today across the coast and valleys associated
with a deepening marine layer ahead of our next weather system.
Best chances to see good sunshine today was to get on a boat and
spend time on the ocean. Or across the far interior sections.

Light rain expected to arrive later this evening in northern SLO
County and by around sunrise in LA County. The front itself will
provide roughly 3 hours of steady light rain followed by a few
hours of scattered showers, meaning most areas except eastern LA
County and the northern mountains will be done with the rain by
noon. Rain amounts expected to mostly be under a quarter inch,
though locally up to around a half inch in the eastern San
Gabriels.

The biggest impacts from this system will be the wind and the
snow. This is another cold system with snow levels expected to
drop to around 2500-3000 feet. A winter weather advisory has been
issued for up to 6 inches of snow at the higher elevations and
1-3" possible over the Grapevine on Interstate 5 beginning after
sunrise Monday morning. Snow will taper off later in the afternoon
and evening in most areas, except strong northwest flow will
continue to create the lifting needed to maintain snow showers
from the I5 corridor west through the northeastern Santa Barbara
Mountains into early Tuesday.

Strong west to northwest flow behind the front will lead to strong
advisory level winds starting late morning and continuing through
the afternoon. Strongest winds will be at or within a few miles of
the beaches and in the western Antelope Valley where gusts to 50
mph are possible. Gusty winds in the mountains as well, especially
the I5 corridor. Mountain winds will continue overnight into early
Tuesday, likely spreading down into some of the valleys and
perhaps even the coastal zones Monday evening into Tuesday morning
and additional advisories may be needed for that.

A warming and drying trend expected Mon-Wed as high pressure
develops over California.

.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...14/142 PM.

High pressure shifts east Thu/Fri as the next system arrives along
the West Coast. All the energy with this one is well to the north
and the official forecast is still dry, however this might change
in the next couple days as there are quite a few ensemble
solutions from both the ECMWF and GFS that bring light rain at
least through SLO and northern Santa Barbara Counties.

Most model solutions favor a deeper trough next weekend but with
limited moisture. High confidence in a cooler pattern next
weekend but very low confidence on precip chances. Very few of the
ensembles bring any rain farther south than Santa Barbara County
but if the trough ends up as deep as what the deterministic runs
are showing there'd at least be a small chance of precip for
southern areas.

Rain will develop this evening in the northwest portion of the
forecast area and spread across all of the waters by early Monday
morning. The heaviest rain will fall from midnight through mid
morning for areas north of Point Conception and from early
morning through late morning from Point Conception southward. The
rain will be out of the area Monday evening.

For the Outer Waters... Good confidence in current Small Craft
Advisory (SCA) starting late tonight and the GALE WARNING by
Monday afternoon. SCA winds will likely follow the Gale Warning on
Tuesday. Seas will build to SCA level on Monday and continue
through Tuesday evening with the peak of near 16 feet occurring
Monday night. Conditions will be below SCA level Wednesday through
Friday.

For the Inner Waters north of Point Sal... SCA level winds will
develop tonight and continue through late Monday evening. Seas
will build to SCA level on Monday and continue through midday
Tuesday. Conditions will be below SCA level Wednesday through
Friday.

For the Inner Waters south of Point Conception... Gusty SCA level
winds will develop early Monday, especially for the Santa Barbara
Channel and near San Nicolas Island shortly building to GALE FORCE
around noon. Seas will build to SCA level on Monday then diminish
to below SCA level by early Tuesday. Conditions will be below SCA
level Wednesday through Friday.

The combination of scattered showers, widespread gusty winds and
large, choppy seas will be dangerous to boaters, and mariners
should seek safe harbor until conditions improve.
