Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
216 PM PDT Thu Jul 8 2021
.SYNOPSIS...08/214 PM.
Strong upper level high pressure will bring excessively hot
temperatures to the interior valleys, mountains and deserts
through early next week, with above normal temperatures most
everywhere away from the coast. Night and morning low clouds and
fog will be confined to the coastal plain through early next week,
otherwise mostly clear skies can be expected.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-SUN)...08/208 PM.
There were patchy low clouds at the Central Coast beaches early
this afternoon. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies covered the area
except for varying amounts of mid level clouds pushing thru
VTU/L.A. Counties from the SE. Little change can be expected thru
rest of the day. However, there is still a small chance of
afternoon cu buildups over the mtns, and a non-zero chance (up to
10%) of a thunderstorm developing over the eastern San Gabriels
into the southeastern Antelope Vly later this afternoon to early
evening. Any thunderstorms that form could produce a few dry
lightning strikes and gusty winds.
The hottest temps this afternoon are expected in the Antelope Vly
with widespread highs 105 to 109 degrees, where an Excessive Heat
Warning is in effect. Other interior vlys (SLO County and Cuyama
Vly) will reach the upper 90s to 105. Good onshore gradients to
the N and E this afternoon (e.g., NAM fcst LAX-DAG +7.5 mb at 00Z)
will help the heat to be less pronounced for the coastal vlys,
but typical hotter locations like the SW San Fernando Vly will
still top the century mark today.
A large 596 dm upper level high was centered along the AZ/UT
border this afternoon. The high will remain in this area thru
tonight, strengthen to 598-560 dm while drifting to the W into NV
Fri and Sat, then weaken very slightly to around 597-598 dm as it
slides into east-central CA on Sun. Southwestern CA will remain
under the SW periphery of this upper level high thru Sun, with H5
heights over the area around 592-593 dm today, increasing to near
596 dm Fri, and to around 597-598 dm on Sat and Sun. Interestingly
enough, if the forecast for Saturday's H5 heights are correct,
the 598 dm height over KLAX would be only 1 dm shy of the all time
record dating back to 1948! The flow aloft will be generally SE
thru the period which will draw additional mid level moisture into
the region, mainly above 600 mb.
The marine inversion is forecast to get squashed well below 1000
ft deep tonight and Fri, and as low as near surface-based along
the Central Coast Fri night into Sat morning, with a shallow
inversion persisting into Sun. There should be some marine layer
clouds along the coast night and morning hours which could be
locally dense. Otherwise, mostly clear skies will prevail across
the forecast area thru Sun except for possible mid level clouds
at times along with afternoon cu buildups over the mtns,
especially in L.A. County. There will also continue to be a non-
zero chance of an afternoon thunderstorm mainly over the eastern
San Gabriels Fri, and possibly into Sat. Good onshore flow will
continue each afternoon with breezy to gusty SW-NW winds strongest
over the foothills, mtns and deserts.
The bigger story is the building heat Fri thru Sun, with
Excessive Heat Warnings expanding into the Cuyama Vly and the SLO
County Interior vlys and mtns. Heat Advisories will also be issued
with the afternoon zones for the L.A./VTU/SBA County mtns
starting Fri, and for the Santa Clarita Vly Fri thru Sun. Highs
will increase several degrees each day, and by Sat the Antelope
Vly will see highs 107-113 deg, with the SLO County mtns and
Cuyama Vly reaching 105-110 deg, and the SLO County Interior vlys
up to 106-113 degrees. It looks like the lower elevations in the
VTU/L.A. County mtns could reach the upper 90s to as high as 106.
Finally, the hottest coastal vlys are expected to top out in the
upper 90s to 103. Temps in the hottest interior areas should
approach or reach record levels over the weekend.
.LONG TERM (MON-THU)...08/210 PM.
The EC and GFS are in very good agreement during the extended.
The upper level high will remain strong (around 596 dm) over
central into SW CA on Mon, then weaken slightly to 595 dm as it
moves over SW CA on Tue. The upper level high should remain over
or just SW of the forecast area while slowly weakening to 594 dm
Wed and to 593 dm Thu. At the surface, good onshore pressure
gradients to the N and E will persist thru the extended period,
with breezy to gusty afternoon SW-NW winds expected, especially
for the foothills, mtns and deserts.
The marine inversion will continue to be quite shallow on Mon
then slowly increase Tue thru Thu. There will continue to be night
and morning low clouds and fog along the coast Mon and Tue then
there should be some intrusion into the vlys Wed and Thu. Some low
clouds may persist at the beaches especially along the Central
Coast each afternoon as well. Otherwise, mostly clear skies will
prevail across the region Mon thru Thu.
Excessively hot temps are expected to persist in the interior
vlys and deserts on Mon, with the Excessive Heat Warning
continuing for those areas. The Heat Advisory will also continue
thru Mon for the L.A./VTU/SBA County mtns. It looks like increased
onshore flow will help temps to cool some for Tue, with a cooling
trend expected thru Thu. Even so, temperatures will still remain
above normal for many parts of the interior vlys, mtns and
deserts.
&&
.AVIATION...08/1813Z.
At 1714Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 900 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was 3300 feet with a temperature of 29 C.
High confidence in valley and desert TAFs. Moderate confidence in
coastal TAFs. After VFR conditions this afternoon, there is minimal
duration and coverage expected to return to coastal TAFs later
tonight through early morning Friday.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in the 18z TAF. No east wind component
greater than 3 KT.
KBUR...Very good confidence in CAVU TAF.
&&
.MARINE...08/120 PM.
NW winds are expected to diminish quickly this morning, but some
lingering Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level gusts are possible
north of Point Conception into the afternoon. Local gusts to 25
knots will likely linger into this afternoon. By the afternoon,
high confidence that winds and seas will remain below SCA level
through Friday. On Saturday, there is a 40-50% chance of
widespread SCA level NW winds returning from the Central Coast to
San Nicolas Island through the weekend.
