.SYNOPSIS...16/738 PM.

There will be gusty northeast winds through Sunday with continued
above normal temperatures. A couple of upper lows will bring much
cooler weather to the area starting on Monday. There is a slight
chance of rain and snow showers across the mountains of eastern
Los Angeles County Monday night through Tuesday night. Very strong
and damaging northeast winds will be possible Monday night into
Wednesday, especially across Los Angeles and Ventura Counties.

.SHORT TERM (SAT-TUE)...16/701 PM.

***UPDATE***

After an unseasonably warm, dry and windy day, warm temperatures
are still observed around the forecast area with many sites in the
low 70s to low 80s. Northeast winds have subsided some, which
will allow the Red Flag Warning to expire at 8 PM this evening,
but many areas in the LA and Ventura interior are still breezy
with peak gusts between 35 to 40 mph. The winds will increase
again later tonight through Sunday afternoon, but should be
somewhat weaker and more isolated than today. A Wind Advisory
remains in effect through 3 PM Sunday. After that time, winds will
decrease more substantially, but will increase again Monday with
damaging winds likely Monday night through late Tuesday night. A
High Wind Watch has been added for the mountains and valleys of LA
and Ventura Counties for that time. No other changes to the
forecast needed at this time.

***From Previous Discussion***

An unseasonably strong 589 dm upper level high was about 500 NM
SW of Point Conception this afternoon. This high will drift
slowly W tonight thru Sun. A sharp upper level trof will move
into northern CA Sun night, then strengthen into an upper level
low while pushing quickly thru swrn CA Mon morning, and south to a
position over or a little SW of the SoCal Bight Mon afternoon.
Another piece of energy will push S out of the Great Basin Mon
night then merge into a large and unseasonably strong upper level
low (around 542 dm) just off the nrn Baja coast on Tue.

For tonight thru Mon, mostly clear skies will continue altho there
may be a few more hi clouds at times. Good offshore pressure
gradients will persist to the N and E thru Sun, with gradients to
the E peaking late tonight (NAM fcst LAX-DAG -7.2 mb at 12Z Sun).
Gusty N to NE winds will continue across the region thru Sun, with
the strongest winds expected tonight into Sun morning across
portions of VTU/L.A. Counties where Advisory-level winds will be
possible again. Gusty N winds will likely develop in the L.A./VTU
County mtns and vlys Mon morning thru the afternoon, and another
Wind Advisory will likely be needed.

Offshore pressure gradients will increase substantially Mon night,
and by 12Z Tue the NAM is fcst LAX-DAG to be -8.7 mb, a 24-hour
trend of -7.4 mb. The GFS (-7.3 mb) and EC (-7.8 mb) match up well
with the NAM gradients at that time. There will be rapidly
increasing NE winds throughout the lower to mid atmosphere along
with good cold air advection, and strong negative vertical motion
that will accelerate the strong winds aloft (e,g, fcst 850 mb
winds up to 70 kt, and 950 mb winds up to 60 kt) downward to the
ground. The models have been consistently forecasting widespread
strong and damaging wind event over a large part of VTU/L.A.
Counties for Monday night and Tuesday. We are gaining confidence
that widespread sustained NE winds of 35 to 55 mph will be possible
with gusts of 70 to 80 mph, strongest below and through passes
and canyons. Winds of this magnitude would result in many downed
trees and powerlines, possible widespread power outages, and
property damage. Travel will be very difficult, particularly for
high-profile vehicles. People should already start to prepare for
this potentially dangerous wind event by securing outdoor objects
and be ready for any power outages.

There will also be wrap-around moisture from the upper level low
which is expected to bring cloudiness and a slight chance of snow
showers to the eastern San Gabriel Mtns Mon night thru Tue evening.
Otherwise, partly cloudy skies should prevail over L.A. County
during the period, with mostly clear skies elsewhere.

Temps will turn a couple of degrees cooler Sun but remain 10-20
deg or more above normal, with the warmest vlys and inland
coastal areas topping out in the 80s to around 90. The hottest
spot in the continental U.S. will certainly be somewhere in
southern California again on Sunday. Altho temps will turn much
cooler on Mon, it will remain several degrees above normal. Highs
on Mon for many vlys and coastal areas will be in the lower to mid
70s. Highs will be slightly cooler on Tue, except significantly
cooler for the mtns and deserts.

.LONG TERM (WED-SAT)...16/207 PM.

The GFS and EC are in better agreement today overall compared to
the last few days. The upper level low will persist around nrn
Baja on Wed with some wrap-around moisture lingering at least
into the morning hours over the eastern San Gabriels. The upper
level low will eject eastward rather quickly on Thu with a weak
pop-up ridge moving into srn CA. It looks like a large upper level
trof will move into central and swrn CA by Fri then linger over
the area for the most part into Sat, altho the GFS does move this
feature mostly E of the region by Sat afternoon. There should be
some pcpn moving into the area on Fri and Sat, but the EC and GFS
do not match up very well with timing and location of any pcpn,
and used NBM pops for the the extended period.

Except for some lingering snow showers possible in the L.A.
County mtns early Wed, it should be dry over the forecast area Wed
and Thu with mostly clear to partly cloudy skies. Partly to
mostly cloudy skies can be expected Fri and Sat with a slight
chance to chance of rain and mtn snow across much of the region.
There should be leftover gusty NE winds at least to Advisory
levels thru Tue evening across portions of VTU/L.A. Counties then
winds will diminish. Temps are forecast to be a few degrees above
normal Wed except near normal to a few degrees below normal in the
mtns and deserts. Above normal temps are expected most areas on
Thu, then cool significantly Fri and Sat, with highs well below
normal for many areas by Sat.

At 0412Z at KLAX, there was no marine layer. There was a surface-
based inversion with the around 1200 ft at 26 degrees C.

High confidence in all CAVU TAFs and moderate confidence in winds.
Good confidence in northeast winds continuing across Ventura and
Los Angeles Counties, but wind speeds may be off by up to 8 kt.
There is a chance of moderate turbulence and LLWS especially
around higher terrain.

KLAX...High confidence in CAVU TAF. Good confidence that an east
wind component will be 5 kt or less.

KBUR...High confidence in CAVU TAF and moderate confidence in
wind. There is a 20% chance of north to northeast winds up to 8
kt through 14Z.

.MARINE...16/827 PM.

Across the Outer Waters...
Gusty northwest winds and hazardous seas will continue through at
least Tuesday. There is a 30 percent chance of gale winds Monday
night and Tuesday. Mariners should use extra caution crossing the
Morro Bay Harbor entrance this afternoon through Monday.

For the Inner Waters North of Point Sal...
A brief decrease in seas is expected Sunday, however, wave
heights will still be near 10 ft. Thus, leaving the SCA in place
as wave heights will increase again Sunday night. Hazardous seas
will continue through at least Tuesday. Winds will increase to SCA
levels Monday night and Tuesday.

For the Inner Waters South of Point Conception...
Good confidence in SCA level gusts developing from Point Mugu to
Santa Monica out to around Anacapa Island tonight, lasting into
Sunday morning. There is a high probability that offshore NE to E
winds will reach strong GALE WARNING levels as a strong Santa Ana
wind event develops Monday evening peaking Tuesday. Hazardous
seas may reach 10 feet across the western portion of the inner
Santa Barbara Channel on Monday.

East facing Harbors, such as Avalon Harbor at Catalina Island and
other east facing harbor entrances across the Channel Islands will
be affected with strong GALE winds and steep seas entering the
harbors. Mariners should stay focused on the upcoming coastal
waters forecast due to the very strong winds expected.

.BEACHES...16/733 PM.

A long period west to northwest swell will move through the
coastal waters through early next week, resulting in high surf
and dangerous rip currents on all west and northwest facing
beaches.

For the Central Coast... a large northwest swell moving through
the coastal waters will bring two periods of high surf. The first
will peak through this evening and the second will be on Monday.
There is a forty percent chance that a High Surf Warning will be
needed for the Central Coast on Monday as dangerous surf could
exceed 20 feet.

For the Los Angeles and Ventura County beaches and exposed west
facing beaches across the Santa Barbara South Coast... the surf
will be increasing to 5 to 8 feet with higher sets across Ventura
County Beaches to 10 feet. There will be dangerous rip currents.
Another potentially larger swell will bring slightly larger surf
across exposed west facing beaches on Monday.

.FIRE WEATHER...16/731 PM.

The Red Flag Warning will expire at 8 pm this evening as offshore
winds gradually diminish later tonight into Sunday. However,
elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions will continue
across the region. During this time, north to northeast winds are
expected to gust between 25 and 35 mph across Los Angeles and
Ventura counties, with isolated gusts up to 45 mph in the foothills
and mountains. After poor humidity recoveries in the foothills
and mountains tonight, humidities are expected to lower to between
8 and 15 percent on Sunday.

A very strong and damaging north to northeast wind event is likely
between late Monday and Wednesday morning. The strongest winds
are expected to be late Monday night into Tuesday when widespread
damaging wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph (and possibly higher) will be
likely in the mountains, foothills, and some valley locations in
Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Even coastal areas (including
portions of the LA Basin) will likely see local damaging wind
gusts of 50 to 60 mph. Due to the uncertainty with the track of
the upper low and the possibility of some moisture entrainment on
Tuesday, confidence remains low with the humidity forecast.
However early in the event from Monday afternoon into Tuesday
morning there's a chance that red flag conditions will return,
especially across coastal and valley portions of Los Angeles and
Ventura Counties where downslope drying will be maximized.
Significant wind impacts are likely with this event, including
a threat of widespread downed trees and powerlines, as well as
power outages. Winds are then expected to diminish starting
Thursday, with a chance of precip. Friday through Sunday.
