High pressure will keep very warm temperatures over the area
through the week. The marine layer will remain shallow with night
through morning low clouds likely remaining over coastal areas.
There will be a slight chance of monsoonal thunderstorms over the
eastern mountains and desert on Thursday and Friday.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...06/910 AM.
The marine inversion at VBG was around 900 ft deep early this
morning, while at LAX it was around 1600 ft deep. Both soundings
showed a pronounced warm layer peaking at around 3000 ft with
temps around 85 or 86 deg. The max temp potential on the VBG
sounding was 105 deg. There will be a rapid warmup this morning
for the valleys, mtns and deserts, with temps soaring by midday
especially over interior areas where temps are expected to reach
the upper 90s to near 106. A Heat Advisory remains in effect today
for the mtns, SLO County interior vlys, Cuyama Vly, and Santa
Clarita Vly. Pressure gradients this morning have trended about 2
mb onshore to the N and E over the past 24-hours, and this will
help cool temps down some for the coastal valleys. However, it
will still be quite hot for the San Fernando Vly with highs up to
103 or so around Woodland Hills.
Areas of low clouds and patchy dense fog prevailed along the
Central Coast into the Santa Ynez Vly early this morning, and some
low clouds also affected some coastal areas S of Point
Conception. All the low clouds will clear to or off the coast by
mid to late morning. Otherwise mostly sunny skies with some hi
clouds at times will prevail across the forecast area thru this
afternoon. Pressure gradients will be about 4 mb stronger onshore
this afternoon compared to yesterday which will help to produce
breezy to locally gusty S-W afternoon winds across the region,
especially for the foothills, mtns and deserts.
A 597 dam H5 upper level high will remain over Nevada today thru
Tue morning, then drift into Utah by late Tue afternoon and remain
over this area thru Wed. Southwestern CA will remain under the SW
periphery of this large upper level high over the next few days,
with H5 heights around 593-594 dam thru tonight, and around
592-593 dam Tue thru Wed. A broad mainly SE flow aloft will
prevail thru the period which will import some mid-level monsoonal
moisture into the area by Wed.
The marine inversion should be quite shallow and less than 1000
ft deep N of Point Conception the next two nights, while S of
point Conception it should be between 1000-1500 ft deep tonight,
but may shrink to around 1000 ft deep or so Tue night. Varying
amounts of night and morning low clouds and fog are expected to
affect many coastal areas and locally into some of the adjacent
vlys thru Wed morning, otherwise mostly clear skies should prevail
across the region altho some afternoon cu buildups will be
possible in the L.A./VTU County mtns Tue and especially Wed. There
should be decent onshore gradients to the N and E each day for
breezy to locally gusty afternoon S-W winds to persist, strongest
over the foothills, mtns and deserts.
Temps are forecast to cool several degrees for most areas on Tue,
except for the Antelope Vly, then warm up a couple of degrees for
Wed. It will be about continue to be well above normal away from
the coast each day. The warmest vlys and lower mtns should reach
the mid 90s to around 103 on Wed, except up to 106 in the Antelope
vly, and into the upper 90s to 105 on Wed. Additional Heat
Advisories may be needed for some interior areas Tue and Wed.

Thursday, landing it over the Four Corners region. Despite it being
in a favorable location for monsoonal flow, models have considerably
backed down on the the precip chances for our area. PWATs increase
to around 1.25 inches but moisture remains confined to the mid-
levels. Convective parameters also do not appear particularly
impressive. Most ensemble solutions keep the area dry, so have
reduced PoPs to slight chance for the eastern San Gabriel
mountains and eastern Antelope Valley. The upper-level high pushes
to the south and weakens slightly on Friday. The southeast flow
aloft will remain, but with less moisture and instability, the
chances for any monsoon activity will be even less than Thursday.
The GFS and ECMWF disagree through the weekend with respect to the
synoptic pattern, but agree that the upper-level high will
continue to weaken and loosen its grip on Southwest California.
The monsoon threat will shut off through the weekend as flow
shifts to a drier south to southwesterly. There will be a slight
cooling trend on Thursday and Friday, but become more noticeable
through the weekend. Temperatures by Sunday will be back to around
normal to a few degrees above normal.

At 12Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1500 feet deep. The top of
the inversion was at 2700 feet with a temperature of 30 C.
Low clouds were widespread on the Central Coast and in the Santa
Ynez Valley. There were areas of low clouds in coastal section of
L.A. County and the San Gabriel Valley, and patchy low clouds in
coastal sections of Ventura County southern SBA County. Conditions
were mostly LIFR to VLIFR, except high IFR to low MVFR across
coastal sections of L.A. County. Expect skies to clear by mid to
late morning in most areas, but clouds could linger at some
beaches into the afternoon. For tonight, expect widespread low
clouds in all coastal areas (with the possible exception of the
south coast of SBA County), and in the Santa Ynez and San Gabriel
Valleys. Expect LIFR to VLIFR conds in most areas, except IFR
conds in coastal sections of L.A. and Ventura Counties.
KLAX...Low confidence in the 12Z TAF. There is a 40% chance of
high IFR to low MVFR cigs between 14Z and 18Z this morning.
There is a 30% chance that cigs will arrive as early as 04Z this
evening. There is a 20-30% chance of an east wind component of
8-10 knots between 14Z and 17Z this morning, and between 10Z and
16Z Tue.
KBUR...Moderate to high confidence the 12Z TAF with VFR conds
thru the period. There is a 20% chance of IFR cigs through 16Z
this morning, and after 10Z tonight.

Across the northern outer waters zone, (PZZ670), moderate to high
confidence that Small Craft Advisory (SCA) conds will develop this
afternoon, then continue thru late tonight. Conds are expected to
be below SCA levels Tue thru Wed, then SCA conds are likely Wed
night/Thu, with a 40% chance of SCA conds Fri. Across the central
outer waters zone (PZZ673), SCA conds are expected thru late
tonight, then conds are expected to remain below SCA levels thru
Fri. with a 30-40% chance of SCA conds Wed night/Thu. Across the
southern outer waters zone, SCA conds are not expected thru Fri.
For the inner waters north of Pt. Sal, there is a 30% chance of
SCA conds this afternoon and evening. Otherwise, SCA conds are
not expected thru Fri.
For the inner waters south of Pt. Conception, SCA level winds
or seas are not expected thru Fri. However, there could be local
northwest to north wind gusts to 20 kt this evening across western
portions of the SBA Channel below passes and canyons.
However, short period seas will affect much of the waters today,
with periods of 5 to 7 seconds. Patchy dense fog will affect the
coastal waters this morning, with vsbys of 1 NM or less.

.BEACHES...06/754 AM.
A south swell of around 2 feet at a period of 16-18 seconds will
linger through Tue, peaking later today thru Tue morning. Surf
will average 3 to 5 feet during this time, highest on exposed
south facing beaches.
There is a high risk of strong rip currents across Los Angeles
and Ventura County beaches, and on Catalina Island thru Tue
morning. A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for these areas
until noon on Tuesday. Strong rip currents will create dangerous
swimming conditions, with an increased risk of drownings since
dangerous rip currents can pull swimmers out to sea.
