.SYNOPSIS...02/152 AM.
Expect fair weather through the week, with high temperatures five
to ten degrees above normal through midweek. Some night through
morning low clouds and dense fog could affect some coastal areas
over the next few days. Gusty afternoon and evening winds along
with lower humidities will elevate the fire risk, mainly focused
across the mountains, Antelope Valley and the Santa Barbara South
Coast and adjacent foothills through mid week.

.SHORT TERM (TDY-WED)...02/907 AM.
***UPDATE***
Synoptically, the forecast models are in reasonable agreement
regarding the short term and even resemble each other in the
longer term. A 594 DM high remains quite persistent over southern
California through Wednesday, at least. At the same time, the
marine clouds seem hopelessly lost at sea south of Point
Conception due to very weak onshore flow providing little impetus
to drive the marine clouds into coastal sections this morning.
The models also agree on the gradual onshore flow trend to the
east affecting much of the area, which should eventually provide
enough guidance to the marine clouds lost at sea to find their way
back into the coastal sections south of Point Conception, but
probably not until Wednesday morning, and not into any valleys due
to the shallow nature of the marine layer.
However, gradients to the north will persist in creating some
gusty winds through the Santa Ynez Mountains over the next three
nights, enough for a wind avdvisory tonight. In fact, the next two
nights could have even stronger wind gusts over especially
western portions of the Santa Barbara County south coast, and fire
weather products will highlight the elevated fire concern over
southern Santa Barbara County. Low afternoon humidities and above
normal temperatures will also be a concern for the valleys of
LA/Ventura counties as well as the mountains and deserts.
Immediate changes to the highlights in the short term include an
extension of the excessive heat watch for the Antelope Valley into
Wednesday and an expansion of the heat advisory for today through
Tuesday to include the LA/Ventura County mountains where the
foothills are likely to exceed 100 degrees in the warmest
locations.

A 595 dam upper high will be centered over the CA/AZ/NV triple
point for the next three days. Hgts over LA/VTA counties will be
594 dam with 593 dam hgts over SLO/SBA counties. In the mornings
there will be weak onshore flow to the east and weak offshore flow
from the north. In the afternoons there will be about 3 MB of
onshore flow to the north. The onshore push to the east will
increase each afternoon rising from 4.8 MB this afternoon to 7.4
MB Wednesday afternoon.
This upper level pattern is not at all conducive to monsoon flow
and there will be no convective threat in the short term.
The subsidence from the upper high, the lack of an eddy and not
much if any onshore flow has drastically curtailed the low cloud
formation and today and Tuesday will be mostly clear with only the
west coast of SBA county standing any chc of seeing some marine
layer stratus. There is a better chc of more widespread stratus
across the coasts (the hgts will keep the marine layer smooshed to
less than a 1000 ft thus precluding vly penetration) but there is
a decent chc that there will be much less clouds than fcst.
The only wind issues will be across the SBA south coast where a
decent northerly push will set up each evening. There will be
enough upper level support to set up advisory wind gusts across
the western half of the SBA south coast each evening and
overnight. The wind gusts will increase a little each evening as
the north to south gradients increase with time.
Temperatures will be the biggest issue of the short term. The 594
dam hgts, little or no marine layer and weak onshore flow will all
combine with the hot early August sunshine to bring max temps 5 to
10 degrees above normal for all three days. There will be triple
digit heat all three days across the warmest vlys, the lower mtn
elevations and the Antelope Vly. Heat advisories are in effect
today for the Santa Clarita Vly and the San Fernando Vly (mostly
the western half). Heat advisories are not issued for the Antelope
Vly. There will not be much relief from the heat overngiht as
lows will only fall into the mid to upper 70s for the warmest
areas. Tuesday will likely be the warmest day and warning level
heat is possible for the Antelope Vly and an Excessive Heat watch
is in effect there for late tuesday Morning through the evening.
The heat advisory for the Santa Clarita and San Fernando Vlys will
continue Tuesday as well. The stronger onshore push should be
enough to lower temps just below advisory/warning thresholds but
this will have to be evaluated each day.
The very dry airmass over the interior will combine with hot
temperatures to produce some fire weather concerns - please see
the fire weather portion of this AFD for all the details.
.LONG TERM (THU-SUN)...02/321 AM.
Both the EC and the GFS agree that a trof running across Nrn CA
will flatten the ridge over Srn CA - this actually will not have
too much of an effect on the weather hgts will remain near 594 dam
and there will be no monsoon flow. For the weekend a long wave
west coast trof sets up over the area and hgts finally fall albeit
just down to 590 dam.
The bigger weather influence will be at the sfc where there will
be increasing onshore flow to both the north and the east. This
will bring a better longer lasting marine layer stratus pattern to
the coasts (the high hgts will keep the marine layer squished to
under 1000 ft and the only vly that will likely see low clouds is
the Santa Ynez) The stronger and earlier arriving sea breeze will
cool of the coasts and vlys but the interior will have to wait
until the weekend to feel noticeable cooling.
There is no sign of any return of the monsoon flow.

to build in today through Thursday.
Good confidence in the current Small Craft Advisory (SCA) from
Point Conception to San Nicolas Island which will continue through
at at least late Tuesday night and likely into Wednesday. For the
inner waters, high confidence in SCA level winds for western
portions of the Santa Barbara Channel. Moderate confidence in the
newly issued SCA for the waters south of Point Mugu. Winds look
borderline SCA levels, with the strongest gusts expected near
Point Doom and over far western portions of the zone. Tuesday, there
is a 30% chance of SCA reoccurring for the inner waters south of
Point Conception by the afternoon. The gusty winds should also expand
to the Central Coast through San Nicolas Island Tuesday. By
Wednesday or Thursday, there is a moderate chance for borderline Gale
Conditions. These winds will further amplify the persistent short
period seas.

An upper level high pressure system will strengthen across Southern California the next few
days. This will bring a drier air mass into the region, along with a warming trend for most
areas. Humidities will fall to between 5 and 15 percent today through Wednesday across
the mountains, deserts, and many valley locations, especially the San Fernando Valley and
Santa Monica mountains where local single digit readings are expected each day. In addition,
triple digit heat will become more common across inland areas. During this time, onshore winds
are also expected to develop each afternoon and evening, with gusts generally between 20 and
35 mph across interior areas except isolated gusts to 40 mph near the Antelope Valley foothills.
Similar very warm and dry conditions will potentially continue Thursday. As a result, elevated to
brief critical fire weather conditions are expected across the valleys, mountains, and deserts
through Thursday due to hot temperatures, very low humidities, and gusty onshore winds. In addition,
the hot and unstable conditions will bring an increased risk of large vertical plume growth of
new fire ignitions over inland areas this week, especially in the mountains and foothills.
An extended period of sundowner winds with low humidities and warmer temperatures will
potentially bring a long duration of elevated fire weather conditions each night through
Thursday night across western portions of the Santa Barbara south coast and adjacent
foothills. Winds are expected to increase in coverage and speeds from Gaviota to
San Marcos Pass tonight and Tuesday night, when gusts of 25 to 45 mph are expected,
with Wednesday night likely seeing the strongest winds, with local gusts over 50 mph
possible near Gaviota. Humidities are expected to lower to between 10 and 30 percent each
evening across the wind prone canyons and foothills of the Santa
Barbara south coast.
