Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
1113 AM PDT Wed Jul 7 2021
.SYNOPSIS...07/203 AM.
High pressure will continue to build over the region through the
week, leading to warming temperatures each day mainly away from
the coast. The warmest days will likely be Friday through Sunday
when excessive heat will be likely for interior areas. Low clouds
and fog will be confined to the coastal plain and possibly lower
coastal valleys during the overnight and morning hours.
&&
.SHORT TERM (TDY-FRI)...07/928 AM.
***UPDATE***
Marine layer stratus depth a little lower today and onshore
gradients again just slightly weaker than 24 hours ago so coastal
areas should see a few degrees of warming. Meanwhile, everything
still on track with the heat wave for our interior areas this week
going into the weekend. Will likely be converting the Antelope
Valley heat watch to a warning for Thursday and beyond with the
afternoon update.
Also still monitoring the potential for any convection tomorrow.
Models show a surge of elevated instability over the coastal
waters Thursday morning but still pretty dry below 700mb. It's not
out of the question we'll see some elevated convection over the
ocean and possibly even an isolated lightning strike but probably
too dry for any precip reaching the surface. And still not
looking promising for any afternoon thunderstorms over the
mountains but probably at least some cumulus build ups. Will
likely boost cloud coverage Thursday as that mid and upper level
moisture moves through but leave pops at 10% or below.
***From Previous Discussion***
Continued offshore trends should result in less low clouds south
of Pt Conception Thursday morning but will readily admit that the
marine layer stratus often times ignores the forecast. But do
think that the continued hgt rises and offshore trends will
combine to another 2 to 4 (locally 6) degrees of warming to all
areas. Despite the warming the near coast will only be at or even
a degree or two below normal. The interior coastal sections will
be 2 to 4 degrees above normal, the vlys 4 to 6 degrees and the
interior 5 to 10 degrees above normal with the Antelope Vly seeing
max temps 105-107 degrees. This is enough warming to bring the
Antelope Vly into Heat Warning window and an Excessive Heat Watch
is in effect for the day (and continuing through the weekend) The
flow pattern around the upper high is not the greatest for monsoon
flow but it is possible. Right now all mdls are not showing any
moisture transport but agree with current thinking that there is a
10 percent chc of a TSTM over the eastern San Gabriels.
Friday will be very similar to Thursday. There will be a similar
stratus pattern. Temps will continue to exhibit a split
personality with the interior roasting under 597 dam hgts and the
coasts and to a lesser extend the vlys much cooler under a
stronger than normal sea breeze brought on by 8+ mb of onshore
flow to the east. There will be just enough additional warming to
justify an Excessive Heat Watch for interior SLO County and the
Cuyama Valley. The same 10 percent chc of a monsoon TSTM over the
mtns will continue as well.
.LONG TERM (SAT-TUE)...07/322 AM.
The peak of the heat will occur over the weekend as the upper high
shifts to the west and brings it directly over Srn CA. Hgts are
supposed to rise to 598 dam over LAX which if it comes true would
be the highest hgts seen since at least 1999. The Antelope Vly
will be looking at highs from 110 to 115 each day. The lower
elevations of the mtns may need a warning also at this time. The
very strong sea breeze will actually bring a little cooling to the
beaches and temper the heating across the rest of the coasts and
vlys.
Since the high will be overhead the chc of monsoon flow will drop
to zero.
The high weakens on Mon and Tue and the onshore flow actually
increases some more and is forecast to be neat 10 mb onshore to
the east. The Antelope Vly may not cool enough on Monday to
eliminate the Heat Warning. The strong onshore flow will bring
gusty afternoon winds to the mtns which will also bring added fire
danger esp to the LA mtns and foothills of the Antelope Vly.

.AVIATION...07/1813Z.
At 1738Z at KLAX, the marine layer was 1500 ft deep. The top of
the inversion was 5100 feet with a temperature of 26 C.
Moderate confidence in the coastal TAFs, and the LA valley TAFs.
Good confidence in KPMD and KWJF TAFs.
The marine clouds have cleared this morning, and VFR conditions
are expected this afternoon, except for some TAF sites along the
immediate coast, where brief BKN skies could occur with the sea
breeze. The marine clouds are expected to return to the coastal
sections around midnight or possibly later, followed by early
clearing Thursday morning.
The San Fernando valley TAFs should be clear through the night,
but there is a slight chance of marine clouds sneaking in early
Thursday.
The desert TAFs will remain VFR with gusty winds in the
afternoon and evening.
KLAX...Moderate confidence in TAF. There is a 40 percent chance
of brief BKN skies ths afternoon with the sea breeeze. There is a
30 percent chance of the marine clouds returning for good this
evening, earlier than forecast. There should be no east wind
component greater than 3 KT.
KBUR...Good confidence in TAF. VFR conditions are expected. There
is a 20 percent chance of marine clouds sneaking in Thursday
morning.
&&
.MARINE...07/831 AM.
Latest buoy observations show winds below Gale force across the
outer waters from the Central Coast to San Nicolas Island, so have
let the Gale Warnings expire. Some local gusts to 35 kt are
possible through the morning, especially around the Channel
Islands. Moderate confidence in Small Craft Advisory (SCA) level
winds through tonight, with a 40% chance of SCA level winds
spreading into the western portion of the Santa Barbara Channel.
Models are indicating winds will be a touch weaker than yesterday,
so there is a 40-50% chance of Gale force winds late this
afternoon through evening for the outer waters. Winds will
quickly diminish Thursday morning, but there is a 30-40% chance of
SCA level winds continuing north of Point Conception through
Thursday evening. These gusty winds will generate choppy, short-
period seas across much of the waters.
