Through Wednesday night...

Last night's cold front came through the area with little muster,
producing no precip as of 2pm and only a narrow stripe of lower
clouds. However, some light returns are starting to appear aloft,
so a narrow axis of light rain remains a distinct possibility for
areas south of I-80 and east of I-55 into early evening.
Meanwhile, mid/upper-level clouds are clearing quicker than
expected from the northwest, allowing temps to climb into the low
60s early this afternoon.

Though the cold front has cleared the CWA, it will stall across
central IL tonight. Like last night across northern IL, clearing
skies over the shallow frontal boundary will support hazy
conditions across the southern CWA late tonight into mid-morning
Wednesday. Some pockets of shallow fog are possible for low-lying
areas and valleys.

The surface warm front will begin to slowly lift north on
increasingly veered low-level flow Wednesday morning, with the
effective boundary surging northward through the entire CWA by
late Wednesday evening. Modest low-level moisture transport is
expected into the area late afternoon into the evening. Cloud
depths around 5kft amid background WAA should be sufficient to
produce a band of isolated to scattered showers lifting northward
through the area late afternoon into late evening. A period of dry
conditions are then expected for much of the area overnight with
the warm sector firmly in place. Max temps for the calendar day on
Thursday may occur around midnight ahead of a cold front and
associated band of widespread rain Thursday morning. This band of
rain will likely reach up to about the I-39 corridor by 12Z
Thursday.

Main forecast messages for our impending pattern change continue:

  in that time window to exceed 35 mph (medium-high confidence)

* Turning colder by Friday and persisting below normal through the
  weekend (high confidence) with occasional rain/snow showers
  including light snow chances (medium confidence)

To start Wednesday evening, our attention will turn to developing
surface low pressure near or over western IA. The models are in
good agreement with the general idea here, with some variance in
the strength of the surface low. Forecast preference is in the
ECMWF/GFS, with good support from the EC ensemble and GEFS. This
entails low pressure deepening to upper 990s mb by 06z Thursday
near IA/MN border and 993-994 mb near Duluth MN by 12z Thursday.
Strengthening pressure falls will yield increasing southeasterly
winds with gusts up to 25 mph by the late evening and perhaps
sporadically up to 30 mph depending on exact magnitude of pressure
falls. Precipitation wise, strong warm advection/isentropic
ascent could yield some scattered showers across the northwest
third of so of the area during the evening, though noting that
the EC is most aggressive with precip coverage during the evening.

Main event for the short 3-5 hour period of soaking rain/showers
is very late Wednesday night into Thursday morning ahead of the
very pronounced system dryslot in the warm conveyor belt within a
tongue of 1-1.25" PWATs, 200-250% above normal for early November.
Limiting factor for the rain will be its short duration and lack
of any embedded thunderstorms, though strength of synoptic forcing
and moisture content should yield moderate to even at times heavy
rates adding up to 0.25-0.5". The rain will quickly end west to
east by the early afternoon as the dryslot punches in. Thursday's
highs should occur during the rain in the morning, followed by
steady temps into mid afternoon and then a gradual fall toward
sunset. This will occur as west-southwest winds gust to 30 mph, so
the change from the mild start to this week will become noticeable
toward evening.

A very strong PV anomaly will eject from the northern Plains early
Thursday to Wisconsin early Friday. This will phase in with the
existing trough associated with strong surface low to our north,
followed by gradual occlusion/weakening Friday night into Saturday.
This feature (PV anomaly) could make for rather interesting
weather on Friday. Global operational models bring the 500 mb
heights down into the low-mid 520s DM on Friday, with deterministic
negative height anomalies of 300-400 meters. Ensemble mean height
anomalies are a still quite impressive 250-300 m.

Strong synoptic forcing for ascent in the stout cold advection
regime along with very low freezing levels from pronounced
tropopause fold should spell increasing shower coverage from the
northwest and north late Thursday night and lasting through
Friday. Pattern recognition supports idea of rain and snow showers
if not entirely snow showers in any showers with modest rates
given low wet bulb zero heights. Could even see some moderate snow
showers/brief squalls due to steep lapse rates from the surface
to the tropopause with small CAPE values noted on soundings. Highs
will struggle to reach 40F and will spend any time during snow
showers in 30s. West-southwest winds gusting up to 35 mph will add
to the raw feel.

We'll still be in cyclonic flow aloft into Saturday, so possibly
some lingering snow showers or flurries, while lake effect
component could be near northeast Porter County depending on
boundary layer flow configuration. Highs Saturday will again only
be in the upper 30s to around 40. As longwave trough remains
established into Sunday over northeastern North America, the
guidance continues to hint at another low amplitude albeit stout
short-wave scooting in on northwest flow Saturday night into
Sunday. While it will take some time to hone in on specifics with
this, air mass aloft will be cold enough to potentially support
accumulating snow depending on the track/strength of the clipper-
like system. For now, broad-brushed chance PoPs and snow/rain
mention are reasonable. Below/well below normal temperature regime
will continue into start of next work week until longwave trough
finally exits east and paves the way for moderation beyond day 7.

Other than some transient MVFR stratocumulus over the next couple
hours, VFR conditions are expected well into Wednesday afternoon.
NE winds 10-15 knots this afternoon will settle at under 5 knots
in the NE quadrant tonight. Winds will then increase and veer ESE
with a few gusts to 20 knots by late Wednesday morning. A band of
-SHRA with MVFR ceilings and stronger SE winds will be nearing the
terminals from the S at the end of the TAF period, with the
greatest impacts likely Wednesday evening beginning around 00Z.
