Through Tuesday night...

Most of the Winter Storm Watch has been upgraded to a Winter
Storm Warning for Monday afternoon into Tuesday, with an Advisory
issued south and east of there for a wintry mix and lesser snow
amounts. While Warning level impacts are very likely not to last
throughout the entire duration of the Warning, confidence is high
in that magnitude of impacts during Monday evening into early
overnight, and then more temporary heavier snow rates and Warning
impacts into Tuesday (though confidence on Tuesday remains
somewhat on the lower side and cumulative effects will be a factor).
Monday evening is where rates of one inch per hour or a little
over will prevail along/north of I-80, and that will be combined
with wind gusts of around 35 mph. Total snow amounts through
Tuesday of 5 to 8 inches are favored in general in the Warning
area, with isolated higher possible. A Lakeshore Flood Advisory
has been issued for the Illinois and Lake County, Indiana shore
for waves up to 10 to 12 ft, especially Monday night and early
Tuesday morning.

Before the wintry weather, tonight is set to be quiet with the
area primarily under weak surface ridging. To the east of this
ridge over Lake Michigan, onshore flow overnight will result in
lake enhancement to the clouds and potentially flurries or even
light snow into early Monday morning. This includes into Chicago
with a dusting where this is propogating inland not out of the
question.

There were not significant changes in the forecast and the
message for the upcoming winter event, just further refinement.
The most notable observations and adjustments have been some
slowing on the snow onset Monday afternoon due to inherent drier
air and a delay in the deeper moist conveyor belt of the system,
and have better resolved that into the forecast. Also have
tightened the snowfall gradient some in our forecast area both on
the northern and more so the southern periphery of the snow
footprint. This overall narrowing of the heavier total snow
amounts relative to points further west-southwest (Iowa/Missouri
border) as the system moves over our longitude is consistent with
the upper/mid level wave gradually opening and dampening.
Otherwise, many of the other forecast elements have only been
adjusted slightly. Some key uncertainty remains on the northern
extent of the mixed precipitation and the northern nose of the dry
slot which will reduce snowfall rates for a period later Monday
night. Felt that this was not enough to preclude an upgrade to a
Warning for most of the Watch.

The upper low of interest is over the Arizona/New Mexico border
area with a handful of lightning observations within, showing its
potency. As this wave negatively tilts into the central Plains on
Monday morning, it's growing precipitation shield driven by
warm/moist advection aloft will be oriented more west-northwest to
east-southeast. This evolution, coupled with stiffening easterly
low-level flow dragging in drier low-level air, resulted in the
slowing of onset. Considered inching back the headline start times
slightly, but snowfall rates will pick up quickly after dark
Monday evening so did not want to get too fancy. Those heavier
rates will be associated with strengthening broad jet-forced
ascent and isentropic ascent. Also, pronounced frontogenesis from
the Iowa/Missouri border region in the afternoon will move
eastward. This thermally direct circulation is indicated to move
into the area in the evening, though is projected on guidance to
gradually weaken with eastward extent. Weak static stability
aloft, indicated by near zero EPV values, and mixing ratio values
look on the order of 3-4 g/kg, should result in heavy snowfall
rates. About one third of the 12Z HREF members do bring in one
inch per hour snowfall rates into at least north central Illinois
with this, and that's not at all a weak signal over 24 hours out.
The timing of this looks to be between 6 pm and midnight, with
north central Illinois most favored to have longer residence time
just by how the wave is evolving and the dry slot progression into
the southeast forecast area. With snow ratios averaging 9:1 or so
during this time, some locations could get 5+ inches just in the
evening period.

As for that dry slot, that does push northward through later
Monday evening into the overnight. Southern locations, which may
already see a mix by late day Monday, will definitely transition
and guidance ensembles are in good agreement on this. There is
increasing likelihood for the precipitation rates to sharply drop
off as that moves north, likely changing to freezing drizzle or
possibly just drizzle in some places south of I-80. This will
depend some on the mid-level wave's morphology as it enters the
area. This is where impacts may fall off for a period into early
Tuesday morning.

The 700 mb low track over the area on Tuesday still shows some
spread, but the track generally is over the Winter Storm Warning
area, which is where snow may occasionally spike back up to heavy
under the deformation region and cooling and re-saturating
column. There also may be pockets of f-gen, resulting in temporary
bands of snow too Tuesday. Unfortunately confidence on this is
low, but still accumulating snow is likely. In addition, lake
enhancement within snow into the Chicago metro should continue.
This is not a massive amount of enhancement (lake induced CAPE
around 100 J/kg beneath the inversion at 4,000 ft AGL) but enough
to support continuing accumulation. Snow looks to end west to east
with the passing of the wave mid-late afternoon Tuesday with the
possible exception being the lake adjacent areas where light lake
effect snow may continue Tuesday night.

Total combined effects of snowfall and the gusty winds helped inch
up toward warnings. While the snow composition will be wet to
normal (more so wet during the strongest winds Monday night and
early Tuesday morning), winds of that strong combined with the
snowfall rates should make for very low visibility at times.
Total snowfall amounts of 5 to 8 inches are forecast through
Tuesday afternoon, with that southern gradient particularly
challenging as that may shift some still on Monday night. Plus the
path of the upper wave on Tuesday will also dictate where more
modest snowfall amounts hang on. If rates overperform within that,
and/or lake enhancement overperforms, some locations could still
peak up near 10 inches, but that's a lower confidence high end at
this time.

Waves up to 10-12 ft remain consistently forecast for Monday
night into early Tuesday morning for especially the northeast
Illinois shore. This matches the conceptual model for this type of
event, with near to gale force winds for a 12 hour period and
fairly stiff winds overall for 24-30 hours. Impacts with high Lake
Michigan levels and these wave heights typically result in
flooding of the City of Chicago Bike Bath and some parks. Warning
level impacts, and potential threat to Lake Shore Drive, have
usually require upper end gales to storm force gusts (50+ mph),
which is not the forecast for this event.

Wednesday through Sunday...

Guidance remains in generally good agreement in depicting a mid-
level short wave trough propagating eastward from the Plains
Wednesday. With the low-mid level baroclinic zone shunted south of
the forecast area in the wake of our early week winter storm,
most of the response looks to occur downstate and into the Ohio
and Tennessee Valleys. Forecast soundings from the ECMWF and GFS
do depict a period of saturation associated with the mid-level
trough during the day Wednesday however, supportive of a potential
for some light snow. Given the track of the better forcing, will
maintain decent chance pops across the southern cwa, decreasing
farther north toward the IL/WI state line. Any lingering light
snow should ramp down quickly Wednesday evening, as the mid-level
trough axis moves east of the forecast area.

Broad upper ridging is then progged to develop into the Midwest
Thursday through Friday night, providing a period of quiet, dry
weather for the end of the week. Wednesday night and Thursday
night could be relatively cold, especially across far northern IL,
as surface high pressure ridge slides across fresh deep snow
cover. Question will be clearing of cloud cover especially
Wednesday night with the ridge still off to the west. NBM blended
temp guidance likely a bit on the mild side, though with so much
focus in the near term will let these ride for now.

Long range model guidance indicates amplified short wave energy
will eject from the southwestern states Friday night into
Saturday, with indications of its associated surface low lifting
northeast into the mid-Mississippi Valley Saturday evening before
tracking across or near the forecast area into Sunday. Current low
track and thermal fields would suggest precip may start as snow
or a mix, then change to rain from the south as the column warms
ahead of the low. Understandably however, confidence is pretty low
with these details still a week out in the forecast.

For the 00Z TAFs...

Aviation forecast concerns:

* MVFR ceilings in the 1500-2000 foot range expected to prevail
  overnight into Monday.

* Light north-northwest winds this evening will turn northeast by
  Monday morning, and will increase and become gusty through the
  day. Gusts likely approaching 30 kts by evening.

* Snow expected to develop toward sunset Monday, likely becoming
  moderate to heavy heading into Monday evening with LIFR
  conditions likely. Snowfall rates of 1" per hour or more
  possible Monday evening with several inches of accumulation.

Weak surface cold front moved across the terminals earlier in the
day, with surface winds turning light north-northwest as of late
this afternoon. MVFR stratus deck lingers across the area,
generally along and southeast of a DBQ-MSN-MTW line, and with the
north-northwest winds the trailing edge may approach or move into
the KRFD area around 06-07Z. Various model guidance does suggest
KRFD may scatter out for a time overnight into early Monday,
though confidence is somewhat low with that as MVFR stratus should
remain in place just off to the east and southeast of KRFD.

Some high-res guidance as been hinting at the potential for some
very light precip (flurries or drizzle) to develop over the lake
overnight and possibly affect GYY/MDW/ORD into early Monday
morning, though forecast soundings indicate moisture is only
3000-4000 feet deep and would not likely support any impactful
precip.

Of greater significance is the approach of a well-advertised
winter storm later Monday afternoon and evening. Deep surface low
pressure with this storm will move into Missouri by afternoon,
tightening the pressure gradient to the northeast across northern
IL and northwest IN. Northwest winds will gradually increase in
response to this, becoming gusty through the day and peaking by
evening with gusts around 30 kts. Precipitation looks to develop
east-northeastward into the terminals during the late afternoon
hours, with high confidence in it starting by around sunset. Snow
will likely become moderate to heavy fairly quickly as the column
saturates, with conditions expected to deteriorate into LIFR range
by early evening. Heaviest snow/snowfall rates are expected during
much of the evening, with 1" or more per hour possible with
several inches of wet snow accumulation likely.

Strong surface low pressure will track from the lower Missouri
Valley through the lower Ohio Valley Monday through Tuesday.
Between this low, and an area of high pressure off to the
northeast of the Great Lakes, a strong surface pressure gradient
will develop which will lead to increasing northeast surface winds
across southern Lake Michigan during the day Monday. Strongest
winds are expected to develop by Monday evening, and continue much
of the night before slowly easing Tuesday.

Current indication is that there will likely be a period of at
least occasional 35 kt gale force winds Monday evening/overnight.
With this in mind, a gale watch is in effect for mainly the
western shore of southern Lake Michigan, from near Gary north to
the IL/WI border for Monday night. It's possible that gale
conditions may edge further into the Indiana waters as well,
though at this time it looks like at the very least small craft
advisory conditions are likely along the Indiana shore. Small
craft advisory headlines will also be needed after the gale
headlines end early Tuesday along the IL shore, with SCA
conditions likely persisting into Wednesday before waves subside.
