Quiet weather is in store, with highs ranging from the upper 20s
to lower 30s today and lows in the 20s tonight. Mid and high
clouds will be streaming overhead through the period.

Bottom Line Up Front:
*Winter Storm Watch Issued for the Entire NWS Chicago CWA*

Model agreement continues to be unusually high at a couple days
out from the event in key aspects: track of the surface low and
very high moisture content to be produced mostly in the form of
snow. In coordination with surrounding WFOs and WPC, have forecast
very heavy QPF amounts late day Saturday into the early overnight
of Sunday (0.7" to 1" liquid equivalent by 12z Sunday) when most
of the snow is forecast to fall. Somewhat mitigating factor is
this occurring on a Saturday PM instead of a weekday, however,
this is increasingly looking to be a high impact event, chiefly
for the late day- Saturday evening period. For simplicity sake,
while certainly not all areas will be seeing heavy snow by mid
Saturday afternoon, started the watch at 3pm CST (21z).

Snowfall rates of 1-2" or more per hour appear quite possible
through Saturday evening, along with easterly winds gusting up to
30-35 mph, strongest near the lake in Illinois. With SLR
generally less than 10:1 during the heaviest snow, this will be a
heavy/dense snow that will likely serve to increase the road
impacts and combined with the wind, could be looking at 1/4 to 1/2
mile or less visibility for several hours in a row. There is some
uncertainty in the far southern CWA counties if mixing can
impinge into the area and cut into amounts, though it's looking
more like the precipitation intensity will be winding down when
that occurs after most of the snow falls. Despite much lighter
snow expected into Sunday, it will take some time to clear the
roads so potential warning type impacts look likely through the
morning. Have a 12pm CST (18z) end time for the watch for most
counties, with the exception of northeast Illinois counties
including Chicago where some lake enhancement could keep some
steadier snow going deeper into Sunday (6pm/00z Mon end time).

*Technical Meteorological Discussion*

Operational model agreement and ensemble clustering for the last
several model cycles has been exceptional for our impending winter
event, particularly in light of large changes occurring up into
the near term the last few winters, and even with our most recent
event. While some changes are possible today that could modify our
forecast, it is appearing unlikely that very large changes in the
system evolution and our forecast are fairly unlikely and confidence
is higher than normal at this lead time in winter storm impacts
in much of the watch area.

The parent short-wave was off the California coast yesterday
evening, though a portion of the synoptic feature was partially
sampled by 00z RAOBs. This short-wave will dig into the desert
southwest tonight and quickly eject east-northeastward into the
southern High Plains on Saturday morning. Surface cyclogenesis
will yield an anomalously deep low pressure for the latitude in
the upper 990s mb near southern KS/NW OK border by mid day
Saturday.

With height rises out ahead of the system, the antecedent pattern
and compact wound up lows up to 700 mb over western Missouri by
00z Sunday normally would spell a rain event for our area. The
overarching key feature to this forecast is the long-lived
blocking ridge displaced well southwest of Greenland, near Hudson
Bay in advance of our system. The system will be forced underneath
the block (surface low track near STL and eastward), importantly
keeping the 850 mb low center south of area and the 700 mb low to
ease east- southeast as well. There are some nuances here for our
far southern counties that do increase uncertainty some,
especially US-24 and south.

For the ingredients for very heavy rates of high water content
snow, exceptionally strong isentropic ascent on the 290K surface
and also noted strong mid and upper level Q-vector convergence
will provide the large scale lifting mechanism. Precipitable water
values on the ensemble mean peaking at 0.7 to 0.8 is extremely
high for a winter event and spells mixing rations of 3.5 g/kg or
more. On the mesoscale, undoubtedly in this type of setup can
expect lower and mid-level frontogenesis to contribute to embedded
intense banding signatures in the warm advection portion of the
system. Finally, forecast sounding depiction of very steep lapse
rates (potentially 8-9C/km) above 500 mb is another ingredient for
heavy to intense precip rates (and maybe even thundersnow). With
CAMs in range, their depiction of what will be an approaching wall
of precip with high reflectivities on Saturday afternoon is
impressive to say the least.

Due to the surface low and 850/700 mb low tracks being forced
south of the area, the precipitation type question is a less
complex one, as with northward extent, chance for any non-snow
during the heaviest precip is dwindling. It's farther south that
the 850 mb 0C line will be perilously close, particularly for
areas south of US-24. On the other hand, coming out of expansive
dry 1030+ mb high pressure off to our east, the support for rapid
evaporative and strong dynamic cooling is there. Therefore, for
this forecast, given the very consistent thermal profile depiction
of the ECMWF, NAM, CMC, UKMET, GFSv16, versus outlier operational
GFS, strongly suspect that the bulk of the QPF even in our far
south will be in the form of heavy wet snow, with the possible
exception of near the Champaign and Vermilion IL and Warren County
Indiana borders.

Prime time so to speak will be in the mid to late afternoon
through Saturday evening with the warm advection wall expanding
from southwest to northeast. 6-hour QPF on Saturday evening in the
0.4 to 0.6"+ range yields increasingly high confidence in 4-6"+
amounts during that period, except far south where the precip
rates will start to wind down. Certainly can envision on the
mesoscale there being periods of ratios as high as 10-12:1, but
predominantly looking at sub 10:1 ratios, so high water content
not overly conducive for blowing and drifting. One item of note
here is the areas north of I-80 that have a lighter/fluffier snow
pack, so as east to east-southeast winds ramp up and gust up to 30
mph, could start to see some blowing snow issues as the system
snow starts to accumulate. Very concerned given the gusty east-
southeast winds and guidance and even ensemble support for those
1-2"/hour rates, that travel could quickly become dangerous to
even impossible in spots. Thus, our message to strongly consider
altering non-essential travel late day Saturday through the night.

Support for heavy snowfall rates will tail off fairly quickly
after midnight as the system starts to occlude and large scale
ascent begins to weaken. It's during this time that the warm nose
aloft and even boundary layer warming to above freezing could
surge into southern areas, but after the damage is done, and for
the above reason also not too concerned on a noteworthy freezing
rain component with this system. Latest to see the moderate-
heavy snowfall rates subside would probably be in the northeast.
With very dense snow covering roads, travel could be quite
treacherous into Sunday morning despite much lower snowfall
intensity. With the weakening deformation area passing over the
area into the daytime on Sunday, but temps near or even slightly
over 32F, think that most of the winter storm type impacts will be
done by about mid day Sunday. Exception to this will be in parts
of northeast Illinois downwind of Lake Michigan where there has
been a signal for lake enhancement, probably from speed
convergence, despite sub-marginal thermodynamics.

Generally light system snow should finally wind down by Sunday
evening and night, with forecast totals offered in the 5-9" range,
again most of which would occur with the initial warm advection
burst Saturday PM-early overnight. That amount of high density
snow occurring in such a short amount of time combined with strong
wind is the primary reason for the Winter Storm Watch. See our
morning messaging suite as to areas with highest confidence in the
6"+ storm total amounts.

Finally, last but not least, with the lake levels still high and
fairly long duration of east to northeast winds gusting up to
30-40 mph, there's an elevated Lakeshore Flood Risk for the
Illinois shore. Would anticipate that at least Lake County and
northern Cook County end up in a Lakeshore Flood Advisory late
Saturday afternoon through early to mid Sunday morning.

.LONG TERM...
200 PM CST

Monday through Friday...

Period of quiet weather is expect for the early to middle part of
next week, before another upper trough brings the next chance of
organized precipitation to the region late in the period.

Closed upper low responsible for our weekend snow is progged to
be centered off to the southeast of the forecast area by Monday
morning. While another shorter amplitude short wave is indicated
dropping southeast across the Great Lakes, the entire large scale
trough axis continues to shift off to the east during the day.
Models are in generally good agreement with precip exiting the
region Sunday night. Forecast soundings depict continued drying of
the column Monday morning, with a subsidence inversion gradually
lowering in response to gradual rising mid-level heights from the
west. Broad upper level ridge then builds eastward from the Plains
to the Midwest Tuesday into Wednesday, allowing dry weather to
persist as resulting surface high pressure drifts across the
region. With a lack of strong cold advection in the wake of the
occluding system to our east, seasonable temperatures appear to be
in store for Monday and Tuesday, though Monday night/early
Tuesday may be fairly chilly due to the combination of new
snowfall from this weekend and potentially good nocturnal
radiational cooling conditions with the surface ridge.

Medium-range models continue to display some considerable
differences with the timing of the eastward propagation of a
western CONUS upper trough during the later half of the week. Have
noted the GFS trending slower more similar to the ECMWF, though
differences even with the ensemble means linger. The very general
consensus at this time is for surface cyclogenesis to take place
in the lee of the Rockies on Wednesday, with the resulting surface
low tracking across or just west/northwest of the cwa
Thursday/Thursday night. This would support warm advection precip
developing as early as Wednesday night, with thermal profiles mild
enough for precipitation to change over to rain on Thursday over
much of the cwa before colder air moves in and potentially changes
precip back to snow on the back side of the system Thursday night
into Friday. With many details still to come into focus, this
will continue to bear closer monitoring over the next several days
especially with the potential for a combination of significant
precip and melting of existing snow pack to produce some hydro
issues across the region.

For the 18Z TAFs...

Aviation forecast concerns:

* Southeast winds increasing Saturday, with gusts approaching 30
  kt by evening.

* Snow develops late Saturday afternoon. Conditions expected to
  deteriorate quickly just beyond end of current 30 hour forecasts
  for ORD/MDW. LIFR likely with a period of moderate to heavy snow
  Saturday evening.

All is quiet in the near term, with surface high pressure just off
to the east across eastern IN/OH. Modest southeast winds will
persist across the terminals into tonight, with only some VFR high
clouds gradually increasing. Only exception to this is for KRFD,
where some lower VFR clouds (around 4500 ft) spread in earlier
this morning. South-southeast low level flow will push these back
north and should be north of the field later this afternoon, but
there will likely be a period of BKN-OVC 4500 VFR through mid-
afternoon for KRFD.

Attention then turns to another winter storm which will approach
the area Saturday. Initial impacts will be with gradually
increasing southeast winds during the day, as surface low pressure
with this system tracks into the lower Missouri Valley by late
afternoon. Winds will likely begin to gust into the 20-25 kt range
by mid-morning, and eventually increase into the 25-30 kt range by
late afternoon with a period of gusts around 30 kt just beyond the
end of the ORD/MDW 30 hour forecast Saturday evening. VFR mid
clouds will thicken and lower during the day as the storm
approaches, with current indications that snow would develop into
ORD/MDW toward sunset (23Z-ish). While the initial hour or two of
snow will likely see a transition from VFR to MVFR cigs with IFR
vis, but this would likely deteriorate quickly to LIFR conditions
in moderate to occasionally heavy snow just beyond the end of the
current TAF period. Snowfall rates of up to an inch per hour,
with several inches of accumulation are possible during the
evening.

A period of gale force winds are likely across the Illinois near
shore waters from Saturday evening into early Sunday morning. The
winds with this system will be southeast during Saturday gradually
backing to easterly Saturday night, providing a stiff onshore
component. The magnitude of pressure falls occurring Saturday
night over the southern part of the lake, will likely support

will build significantly to over 8 ft with this type of setup, and
potentially to once again 10-12 ft that could linger into Sunday
morning. Winds will ease slightly to 30 kt by mid-morning Sunday,
and will back to the northeast. Small craft advisory conditions
(which will begin prior to the onset of gales Saturday) will
likely linger into at least Monday night as waves only slowly
subside within a persistent north winds regime.

DISCUSSION:

A winter storm is likely to impact the region mid to late
Saturday afternoon into Sunday. Moderate to heavy snow, especially
late day Saturday through the early overnight, will likely bring
significant snow accumulations, and easterly winds gusting up to
30-35 mph will likely exacerbate the impacts.

The gusty easterly winds will bring a threat for minor lakeshore
flooding along the Illinois shore of Lake Michigan late Saturday
afternoon through early Sunday morning.
