...Updated Aviation Discussion...
.Short Term...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 247 AM EST Mon Feb 8 2021
An east-west ridge of surface high pressure just to our north will
keep our weather quiet into the mid-afternoon hours today. Though
many locations will see sun to start the day, a large expanse of
clouds to our west will gradually move in. Temperatures recovered
stronger than expected yesterday despite the cold start to the day.
However, today there should be added cloudiness, so will still knock
about a degree off of guidance highs, resulting in afternoon
readings ranging from the mid 30s in southern Indiana to the upper
40s in southern Kentucky.
A weak upper wave developing east of the Rockies this afternoon will
move into the Ohio Valley tonight. At the surface a broad trough
will form from Texas through the Tennessee Valley to the
Alleghenies. 925-850mb southerly flow this afternoon into this
evening will bring moisture into the region and isentropic charts
show upward motion. Cross-sections show frontogenesis reaching from
the Ohio Valley poleward beneath a 100kt upper jet core. A band of
precipitation is expected to form late this afternoon and push east
tonight along and north of the Ohio River. That high to our north
will provide us with cold north/northeast surface breezes. Though
surface temperatures suggest precipitation may start as a brief
period of light rain, soundings indicate primarily light snow,
possibly mixed with sleet, in southern Indiana this evening and more
of a mix in the first row or two of counties south of the river.
Snow accumulations in southern Indiana are expected to be in the 1-2
inch range, though a narrow stripe of slightly higher amounts may be
possible, most likely along or north of a Jasper-Madison line. Any
mixed precip will cut into those amounts.
As we get into the overnight hours the air above 700mb dries out and
we lose DGZ moisture while low level moisture remains high with
temps just below 0C and surface temperatures dropping into the mid
and upper 20s, indicating the possibility of light freezing rain or
freezing drizzle. Road temperatures are expected to stay in the mid
30s in Kentucky but may drop to around freezing in southern Indiana.
As a result, some light icing will be possible by the time of the
Tuesday morning commute along and north of I-64.
After collaborating with neighbors, will go ahead an issue a Winter
Weather Advisory for southern Indiana and a handful of counties in
north central Kentucky from late this afternoon through tonight.
Southern Kentucky should escape the wintry weather, with just some
light rain in the forecast there tonight and lows in the mid 30s.
.Long Term...(Tuesday through Sunday)
Issued at 330 AM EST Mon Feb 8 2021
...Significant and Impactful Wintry Precip Likely Mid-Late Week...
As we move into the extended period, synoptic pattern will feature
broad upper troughing across much of the CONUS with an Arctic low
centered over south-central Canada. At the surface, high pressure
will continue to build across much of the northern and central
Plains and into the upper MS Valley, spreading frigid Arctic air
across the area. With this cold air just to our north, a sharp
baroclinic zone will develop across the OH and TN Valleys. As
several waves of energy eject out of the Desert SW and propagate
eastward towards the Mid-Atlantic, increasing precipitation chances
are expected through mid to late week.
Confidence is increasing in the potential for a significant wintry
weather event across the forecast area beginning late Tuesday night
and lasting through Thursday.
Tuesday...
As Monday night's system exits to the east by Tuesday morning,
expect mostly dry conditions during the day with perhaps a few
lingering rain/snow showers through late morning. With the Arctic
air pressing into the Mid MS Valley, will find a sharp temperature
gradient over the area similar to Monday with highs in the mid 30s
to lower 40s across southern IN and northern KY and highs in the mid
40s to lower 50s across southern KY. Expect mostly cloudy skies to
persist through the day.
Tuesday Night - Thursday...
Precipitation chances will begin to increase from the west late
Tuesday night and persist through much of Thursday. Northerly
surface flow will help reinforce the cold surface temperatures,
while southwesterly 850 mb flow will advect warm and moist air
overtop this cold surface layer. As a result, an area of freezing
rain/sleet is likely to develop within the precip shield. To the
north of this area precipitation will transition to all snow, and to
the south a transition to all rain. Any subtle changes in the
temperature profiles will have a significant impact on p-type, but
currently expecting ice accumulations to be possible across southern
IN and down through the Parkways in Kentucky. Within that area,
ensemble data suggests the highest probability of reaching Warning
Criteria will be along and north of I-64 to about the Ohio River,
which is represented well in the WPC Days 3 and 4 Winter Storm
Outlooks. Additionally, minor snow accumulations will be possible
along and north of I-64, with the current forecast depicting 1-2
inches possible in this area.
Thursday Night and Beyond...
By late Thursday night, precip is progged to exit off to the east
leaving us dry for Friday as high pressure builds into the area.
Large discrepancies in the models leads to lower confidence by the
weekend, with the potential for another system to move through
sometime Saturday or Sunday. Do expect colder temperatures through
the end of the period, although large spread among guidance again
leads to lower confidence.

.Aviation...(18Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 1240 PM EST Mon Feb 8 2021
Most TAF sites have seen VFR conditions this afternoon with the
exception of BWG where CIG have been IFR/MVFR due to low stratus.
Expect to see some improvement for BWG later today and this evening
as that layer of stratus breaks up. We can see this on the visible
satellite imagery.
This evening and overnight we will see an inverted surface trough
move across the region helping to develop precipitation, mainly in
the form of snow, around HNB later this evening and pushing
eastward. The bulk of the precipitation continues to set up north of
the Ohio River with a few snow/rain showers from SDF over LEX
overnight. We still anticipate the heaviest of the precipitation to
occur at HNB and over to SDF, with HNB seeing the best chance at
accumulating snow. After midnight towards dawn, the snow will become
lighter as moisture aloft lessens and could transition over to some
light freezing rain/drizzle as temperatures drop just below
freezing. CIGS overnight will likely be MVFR with lowering to IFR by
day break. While tomorrow dries out, CIGS look slow to improve with
MVFR returning mid to late morning for most TAF locations.
