.Forecast Update...
Issued at 1245 PM EDT Wed Apr 21 2021
Current radar showing scattered showers popping up across our
western half of the CWA and moving SE. Haven't seen any reports of
rain or snow reaching the ground so far, but have gone ahead and
updated weather and sky grids to better match radar and satellite.
Updated products forthcoming.
Issued at 1010 AM EDT Wed Apr 21 2021
Have allowed this morning's Freeze Warning to expire given rising
temperatures reported around the area. Another Freeze Warning for
Thursday morning is also still in effect with no changes made at
this time and valid from midnight EDT / 11 PM CDT tonight to 10 AM
EDT / 9 AM CDT Thursday morning. Frost Advisory remains in effect
for Ohio, Butler, Logan, Warren, and Simpson Counties in southern KY
valid from 11 PM this evening to 9 AM CDT Thursday morning.
Issued at 937 AM EDT Wed Apr 21 2021
Radar is showing some light returns over our western Indiana and NW
KY counties, but no reports of any precip reaching the surface.
Latest hi-res models continue to show isolated to scattered showers
redeveloping this afternoon, mainly over the Bluegrass region. Model
sounding do show the upper portions of the moisture column residing
within the DGZ, so seeing a light rain/snow mix at times is
possible. But with that being said, forecast max temperatures this
afternoon are in the mid 40s, and there is a dry layer of air from
the surface up to 850mb. These two things could keep precip as
mostly rain as well as reduce the amount of precip we will see reach
the surface. Current forecast remains on track and have only made
minor adjustments to near term grids. No updated products necessary.
&&
.Short Term...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 327 AM EDT Wed Apr 22 2021
Radar this morning was showing the heavy to moderate band of snow
working through the Bluegrass down in around the Lake Cumberland
regions. With some lighter lingering snow showers stretching back to
around Louisville down to Bowling Green. This area will continue to
push eastward this morning and push out of the CWA around day break.
The rest of the day will be very chilly and blustery highs in the
upper 40s to near 50 and winds out of the NW between 10-15 mph and
gust approaching 20 mph this afternoon. With daytime heating, lapse
rates will steepen and allow for some scattered convection to
develop across the CWA, from southern Indiana southeast through the
Bluegrass down into east-central Kentucky. Precipitation with any
showers should remain mostly rain, however some graupel and a few
rumbles of thunder within more robust convection can't be ruled out
given the lapse rates.
Any precipitation activity comes to an end this evening as winds
diminish and clouds thin out overnight. This will lead to another
cold morning for late April as temperatures drop into the upper 20s
and low 30s for most of our CWA with the exception of our far
southwestern counties. Will upgrade the Freeze Watch to a Freeze
Warning for most of the CWA with the exception of Ohio, Butler,
Warren, Logan and Simpson Counties which will be under a Frost
Advisory in conjunction with our surrounding neighbors.
.Long Term...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 334 AM EDT Wed Apr 21 2021
A weak surface trough will swing through the upper Ohio Valley on
Thursday. Moisture is lacking and models are not in great agreement,
but after talking with neighbors will go ahead with just some
isolated showers in the Blue Grass.
We'll have one more chilly night Thursday night with lows ranging
from the mid 30s west of I-65 to the lower 30s east. Some locations
along and east of I-75 will probably dip just below freezing
briefly, but overall it looks more like a Frost Advisory level event
at this time. West of there clouds and temperatures should prevent
widespread frost formation.
A center of low pressure over the Texas Panhandle Friday evening
will move to the Tennessee/Ohio Valleys by midday Saturday on its
way to the Jersey Shore by Sunday morning. The Gulf will be open for
business, supplying plenty of moisture to the passing system. As a
result, widespread rain is expected, especially on Saturday. Any
significant instability will stay well to our south, with severe
storms possible along the Gulf Coast.
We then dry out and warm up for the remainder of the forecast
period. By Tuesday we may be up into the 80s.
&&
.Aviation...(18Z TAF Issuance)
Issued at 125 PM EDT Wed Apr 21 2021
IMPACTS: High end MVFR to begin the TAF period with light rain/snow
mix through the afternoon.
DISCUSSION: Radar showing scattered showers advancing SE across the
area with reports of light rain and light snow coming in from BWG to
HNB. Expect mixed showers to continue through the afternoon with
CIGs rising to VFR shortly after TAF issuance. Winds out of the NW
will occasionally gust to around 15kts. Brief clearing tonight will
take place before another low end VFR CIG moves in early Thursday
morning. Winds will pick up again Thursday later morning with gusts
in the 15-20kt range.
CONFIDENCE: Moderate to high on CIG and showers. High on winds.
