Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 212 AM PDT Fri Jul 9 2021 .SYNOPSIS...The heat wave continues as high pressure lingers over the region. Hottest temps of the year will possible this weekend. Slight chance for very isolated storms across central Nevada each afternoon. && .SHORT TERM...This morning through Saturday evening Breezy winds behind departing shortwave possible today, although less than yesterday. Strongest in Elko county with gusts up to around 25 mph. Ridge reasserts itself over the whole CWA today. While slightly cooler today across much of the CWA, it will still be hot with highs in the 90s to low 100s. Not much drop in temps for SE Elko county and northern Nye county, where high temps 100-105 degrees. Excessive Heat Warning continues for SE Elko and Heat Adv for northern Nye. Slightly hotter tomorrow with highs in the mid 90s to mid 100s. Good shot for record highs across the region. Elevated moisture trapped under the ridge will lead to some cu buildups each day. May be enough instablity in central NV to break cap for slight of isolated showers/storms during the afternoon/evening, mainly south of US-50. Little to no precip expected to hit the ground, but gusty downdraft/outflow winds possible. Hazy or smokey conditions possible due to fires off to our north and west. .LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday High pressure holds strong over the region into the start of the new week and encourages persistence of hot temperatures with afternoon highs in the mid 90s to mid 100s accompanied by overnight lows in the 60s and 70s for Sunday and Monday. With Sunday and Monday likely being the hottest days in the long term period, Tuesday onward only sees temperatures trend “cooler” by close 5 to 10 degrees. The downward temperature trend comes from the erosion of the high pressure system particularly from a low embedded in the flow to our north. This is also going to subtly bring in some mid-level moisture and increase the possibility of some dry thunderstorms. Right now it looks like the best chances for this are going to be in southern and central portions of Nevada, but there is still plenty of time for this to change. Another result of this is increased winds during the afternoon each day. Even though there isn’t much indication that these approach critical thresholds, the recent heat combined with the severity of drought and possible dry thunderstorms is going to raise fire weather concerns. && .AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 hours although some afternoon gusts approaching 25 knots are possible at KEKO Thursday afternoon. Some towering cumulus buildups are expected along and and south of US-50 Thursday afternoon and early evening with some virga as well but cloud bases will be above 12 kft. High density altitudes will also be present during the afternoon with above normal temperatures continuing across the region. && .FIRE WEATHER...The hot and mainly dry weather expected for foreseeable future as strong high pressure continues asserts its dominance over the region. Breezy northwest winds still possible today behind departing shortwave, but lesser than yesterday and below critical thresholds. Strongest in Elko county with gusts up to around 25 mph. Elevated moisture and weak will be present each afternoon across central NV, bringing outside shot at isolated showers/storms, mainly south of US 50. Gusty downdraft/outflow winds will be of concern, in addition to the possible lightning strikes. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
