Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 345 AM PDT Sun Jul 4 2021 .SYNOPSIS...A disturbance passing along the northern Nevada border will trigger scattered showers and thunderstorms today, with brief heavy showers and gusty winds possible. Drier and warmer conditions are expected Monday on into next week. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Monday. Shortwave energy over west- central and NW Nevada early this morning will produce instability over much of northern NV later this morning and into this afternoon as the energy pushes NE up into Idaho. The increased instability in combination with significant mid-level moisture will produce showers and thunderstorms over most of northern and portions of central NV today. The driest air and weakest instability today will be over Northern Nye county, where any storms that develop are expected to be isolated. For most of the rest of the CWA, Precipitable Water values between 0.90 and 1.05 and surface Dew Point in the upper 40s to low 50s suggest some cells may again produce some moderate to heavy downpours. CAPE values today are weak to moderate, generally between 50 and 220 J/KG. However, Bulk Shear values are relatively high, suggesting some cells today may be stronger than we have seen in the past week or so. Drier and more stable air pushing up through central NV should help end most of the convection by the mid-evening hours. High pressure building up from the SE on Monday will put an end to showers and thunderstorms, and begin a warming trend. .LONG TERM...Monday night through next Sunday Model agreement continues to see a return of the ridge with a closed upper-level high settle right over the region Tuesday. Heat is expected be the primary concern for the week, but mid-week does present a secondary issue of some fire weather concerns across the region. By Wednesday, model agreement sees a trough pass through the Northern Rockies allowing for the a slight flattening of the ride Wednesday and Thursday. While no precipitation is expected, winds are excepted to pick up those afternoon under what is already excepted to be dry and hot conditions. As it stands current guidance doesn’t expect winds to meet criteria, so products are being held off for now. As the high continues to settle in, dry and warm conditions continue to be the common denominator for each day clear into the following weekend. Look to see temperatures in high 90s to triple digits with a few locations having the potential to break records over the week. Meanwhile, overnight temperatures will provide little in terms of relief from the heat as locations nestled around the low to mid- 60s. West Wendover, especially, will be a concern as lows only drop into the 70s for the week. However, cloud cover from remnant moisture may help alleviate concerns of heat risks and provide some relief to the region. Currently there are no heat related products out for the time frame, but this could changes as models and guidance continue to bring the conditions into better focus. && .AVIATION...A weather disturbance will bring showers and embedded thunderstorms to the area tonight and more so on Sunday. Isolated light showers in the morning will transition to thunderstorms around 18Z or 19Z for all but KTPH, diminishing after 00Z or 01Z. Typical thunderstorm concerns could occur including gusty winds, brief heavy rain with VIS and ceiling reductions and small hail in the strongest cells. Overall conditions improve Sunday night into Monday as high pressure begins to build over the region. && .FIRE WEATHER...Isolated to scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms are expected today across all of northern and most of central NV. Wettest storms will be over northern FW Zones, with a mix of wet and dry storms over portions of central NV.
