Area forecast discussion, Aug 13, 2:20 AM PDT, 11 hours 56 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 220 AM PDT Fri Aug 13 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Hot temperatures expected to continue through the weekend with near to record breaking high temps possible. Afternoon buildups with a few showers and storms possible. Changes in store for next week as a trough works into the west coast. && .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday evening Strong ridging settles over the Great Basin for the next few days. Will see more afternoon buildups and a few showers and possible storms. If isolated storms do form, they could be more of a mix of wet and dry as PWAT values will likely climb above 0.75" and storm motions will be slow as steering winds under the ridge are light. Best potential for showers/storms looks to stretch from NW Nye county up through southern and eastern Elko county where max PWAT, instability and Theta-E values are oriented. On Saturday best potential for showers/storms shifts south and east as max instability and moisture situates over northern Nye into White Pine county. While the majority of the thick smoke from wildfires off to our north and west will stay out of the region, some smoke and haze could seep into northern NV. Winds will be northerly to terrain-driven 5-15 mph. With H5 596dm ridge overhead, expect hot temps with highs in the 90s to low 100s. Will likely see large diurnal ranges with cool nighttime lows, which could limit the Heat Risk potential, although Heat Advisories could be issued for Humboldt and northern Lander/Eureka counties. .LONG TERM...Saturday night through next Thursday Long term forecast brings on and off afternoon convection, and temperatures making a downward trend to the 80s and low 90s. Mid-level moisture makes it into the region on Sunday, and allows for some convection in south/south-central Nevada as the high pressure over us starts to erode. A trough over the Pacific Northwest slowly swings down Monday and Tuesday, bringing a cold front with it. This cold front sags into the north and northwestern part of Nevada, and currently looks to become stationary and stick around the midweek. This keeps winds on the breezy side of things, but nothing noteworthy. Monday afternoon sees the best chance for convection across the whole CWA, but Tuesday onward keeps the probability in eastern and central Nevada. Most convection should be dry, but we aren’t ruling wetting showers out just yet. As it stands, the best chances for any precipitation greater than 0.01” are in northeastern Nye and southern White Pine counties. Sunday sees the highest temperatures of the long term with highs in the 90s and low 100s. As the cold front moves in, we see temperatures trend cooler over the work week and most of us see highs in the 80s and low 90s as we reach the second half of the week. Overnight lows remain comfortable in the 50s and some 60s. && .AVIATION...MVFR conditions expected through the period. Afternoon cu buildups (sct-bkn AOA 9kft) with high based showers/storms, possibly impacting the taf sites, esp ELY and EKO. Winds generally 8-15kts with higher gusts expected. Strong downdraft/outflow winds are possible near showers and storms. The smoky conditions have generally ended across the region, but some hazy skies are still possible, however no vis reductions are expected at the taf sites. && .FIRE WEATHER...Hot temperatures with low relative humidity continues through the weekend. Afternoon buildups and a few storms expected each afternoon/evening through weekend. If thunderstorms do develop, they could be more of a mix of wet and dry as with PWAT values 0.75" or higher and slow storm motions as steering winds under the ridge are light, but the subcloud layer will be hot and dry. Gusty downdraft and outflow winds will be biggest threat from any activity. As we head towards early next week, a system pushing through the region will bring breezy winds, which will lead to elevated wind/low RH threat. In addition, more storms are likely and some could be on the drier side as storm motions are likely to be faster. && .LKN WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... None. && 87/84/87/87
