Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service New Orleans LA 104 PM CST Sat Jan 30 2021 .UPDATE... Updated for 18z aviation discussion. && .AVIATION... Mainly VFR conditions will prevail through the evening hours along with southerly winds occasionally gusting 20 to 25 knots. Lowering CIGS to MVFR range are expected along with some lowered visibility at times as SHRA moves into the region. These lower MVFR conditions are expected to start from west to east during the 03-06z period from KBTR to KMCB/KHDC/KHUM and 06-12z for KMSY/KNEW/KASD/KGPT. A few hours of IFR are expected at several airports mainly from early to mid morning. 22/TD && .PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 443 AM CST Sat Jan 30 2021/ SHORT TERM... High pressure will move east of the CWA today bringing an increase in cloud cover with a primarily dry day for the daylight hours. A much warmer day with highs approaching 70 as a brief return flow ahead of the next system takes place. A vigorous surface low along with a short wave trough will march eastward from the Texas panhandle and into the middle Mississippi valley throughout the day today. The trough will drag an associated frontal boundary into the Arklatex area by this evening bringing a round of showers into the area with the best chances of rain for most areas being between midnight and sunrise on Sunday. Rainfall totals appear to be mostly less than an inch as best instability and lift are not present while the stronger dynamics remain well to our north. Front will move through the region on Sunday around noon with temperatures remaining relatively mild through the day on Sunday as the full cold advection lags until Sunday evening. A gradual decrease in clouds will occur on Sunday with breezy conditions expected behind the front especially south of the lake. High pressure will settle in Sunday night bringing dry and cold conditions through Monday with highs only rebounding into the low to mid 50s. Near freezing conditions will be possible on Monday night/Tue morning as clear skies and calm winds will prevail though that period. LONG TERM (Tuesday through Friday)... Deep longwave trough continues to shift east and out into the open Atlantic Ocean. Strong surface ridge will be building in across the entire mid section of the country. This will provide clear skies and below average temps for the area, with highs and lows 5 to 10 degrees below normal on Tuesday. NBM guidance was a couple degrees cooler than previous run, but seems to match well with MEX guidance trend as well. The upper level pattern will be fairly progressive next week, meaning expect temps to bounce back up to and above climo quite quickly. Highs reach mid 60s Thursday and mid 70s on Friday. Low temps on those days will show a more dramatic change from mid 30s to mid 50s in just a 24 hour run. A series of shortwaves will then be moving through the Central Plains Friday onward before the main trough tracks across the country. The first wave will bring a weak boundary into the region as well as accompanied showers. Its possible that the front may stall in the CWA before the next shortwave pushes it through. New guidance was slightly different than previous in terms of POPs. Not surprised as models tend to struggle in the long range with weaker systems. Either way, likely looking at shower activity Friday through the weekend. MEFFER AVIATION... Seeing occasional visibility reductions to MVFR, but as clouds encroach from the west, any radiation fog should diminish. Clouds will gradually increase in coverage and lower in height with time as the day progresses. MVFR ceilings look to become increasingly likely after 18z as lower layers begin to saturate. IFR ceilings likely for a few hours just in advance of the cold front, which looks to move through the area between 06z-12z Sunday. Conditions should improve to VFR behind the front prior to 18z Sunday. Forecast soundings show thunderstorms shouldn't be much of a threat with the inversion near 800 mb. 35 MARINE... High pressure will slide off to our east as a shortwave and association front move through the eastern plains and then eventually into the coastal waters tonight. Southerly winds will increase ahead of the front today bringing exercise caution conditions to the outer waters. Front pushes through tonight...that along with a tightening gradient winds will strengthen behind the front. Offshore flow will prevail through the early part of the week with Small Craft Advisory conditions likely for Sunday night into Monday for most if not all of the coastal waters.
