.MORNING UPDATE...All eyes on rainfall potential this afternoon
and tonight. Decaying MCS that came out of southeast TX and across
southwest LA has pushed an outflowboundary into the area and that
boundary is beginning to slow down and possibly stall. This is not
a welcome sight. This will provide a focus for storms to develop
this afternoon and tonight. Additionally watching an MCV east of
the MS river that is moving northwest.

So what is going to happen, well confidence is still on the lower
side but feel a little more confident that we will see numerous
showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and there could be a band
of moderate to heavy rain northwest to southeast along or just
west of the MS River. We are currently seeing breaks in the
clouds and this is increasing the instability across the area with
SPC mesoanalysis page already showing SFC based CAPE of 1k-1500
J/kg and this will continue to increase the longer we have sun.
Combine that with increasing LL winds, LL moisture, and PWs
analyzed around 1.7-.18 now and we have the ingredients for
another bout of heavy rain. Storm motion will be slow with storms
likely training over each. Multiple CAMs runs are trying to focus
another bout of heavy rain and actualy over the
EBR/Ascension/Iberville/Livingston area again. Placement is a shot
in dark most of the time however the potential shown by these
models is in agreement with what we are currently seeing and this
is concerning. One wild card is what will that MCV in the Gulf do,
it could actually help knock down the potential for heavy rain
over area west of I-55 but then it would lead to a much better
potential for heavy rain across the northshore and coastal MS.

Other issues, we have expanded the coastal flood advisory. The
strong southeast winds continue to drive water into Lake
Pontrchatrain and Maurepas and this is very likely having impacts
with drainage in Livingston and Ascension parishes. The Amite
River is still rising but the water is drainging towards Bayou
Manchac while tides are also pushing in from the east. This along
with water still trying to drain into Bayou Manchac and some of
the creeks/bayous in southeast EBR has appeared to lead to some
backwater flooding with a few gages going back up. If the rain
expected this afternoon and evening occurs and falls over those
areas then we could see rather significant impacts very quickly.

With what we are currently seeing, we will increase the QPF west
of i-55. Now again this is highly uncertain and could vary
significantly is the MCV is the main focus.

Flash Flood Watch extended through at least tonight as there is
the potential for heavy rain continuing through the night.

Grids and zones will be out shortly. All hazard products have

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 406 AM CDT Wed May 19 2021/

SHORT TERM (Today through Friday Night) Deep tropical moisture
continues to stream northward coupled with a trough axis over the
area. This trough extends well into the SE gulf. A sfc feature has
developed over the north central gulf along this trough that has
tropical like attributes. This will sharpen the pressure field today
as the feature inverts the trough axis causing a strong localized
wind that will move closer to the shoreline today and could bring
winds of around 35mph to at least Plaquemines Parish. Otherwise, a
wind advisory will be posted this morning as winds near and at the
coast should respond to this tightening gradient. These winds should
lower at the earliest late this afternoon or just after dark.

The other issue will be the largre line of sh/ts moving rapidly
across SW LA this morning. The northern portion of the line is
expected to weaken a bit as it gets closer, something we will need
to see first before biting off on this solution. But even if it
weakens a bit, it could still have enough surge to cause a few
strong or even severe TS. The strongest of this line should remain
over the gulf where a gale warning is in place for today. The strong
onshore flow will also keep tide levels very high and coastal flood
advisory/warnings will remain in place.
As the outflow from the eastward advancing line moves into the area,
it will eventually interact with the already established trough axis
by late morning causing more sh/ts coverage which will also keep the
flood watch valid through at least today.

The main heavy rainfall axis should slowly begin to shift back to
the west toward Texas over the next few days but will be stubborn to
do so as a strengthening mid to upper level ridge axis begins to
exert greater influence over the forecast area. Along with somewhat
drier conditions, temperatures will also begin to warm as ridging
builds in with highs warming from the upper 70s and lower 80s into
the mid 80s. The convection will be largely diurnal by Friday with
most of the activity diminishing in the evening hours.

LONG TERM (Saturday through Tuesday)...

Deep layer ridging takes hold of the area by the weekend and remains
in control of the area's weather through at least the first part of
the work week. The high pressure and associated subsidence aloft
should suppress local rain chances. With no rain to cool off the
afternoon temperatures, and generally only partly cloudy skies,
expect afternoon temperatures to rise into the mid to upper 80s each
afternoon. A few places could cross the 90 degree mark, mainly
Sunday and Monday afternoons. Overnight lows will generally be in
the mid to upper 60s north and upper 60s to lower 70s south, which
is near or slightly above normal for this time of year.

AVIATION...Another round of showers and thunderstorms should begin
to develop during the late morning hours and continue to develop
through the afternoon. Brief periods of IFR conditions could
accompany these thunderstorms along with gusty winds from variable
directions depending on TS direction of approach.

MARINE...A tightening pressure gradient will bring increased
onshore flow to the area through the end of the week. Most areas
will have southeast winds of 20 to 25 knots and gusty conditions.
But areas along and west of the Miss River will be higher with SE
winds of 25 to 35kt and gusts to 45kt at times. These conditions
should begin to ease this afternoon or early evening. Small craft
advisories will remain for most areas but a gale warning has been
posted for the much higher wind areas through today. Winds don't
fall enough to roll all flags back and small craft advisory
conditinos are expected to remain through much of the remaining
week.
