DISCUSSION...
GOES-16 Nighttime Microphysics RGB showing much less cloud
coverage tonight, which when combined with light northerly winds
has resulted in cooler temperatures as well. Currently observing
sites around the region showing temperatures ranging the span of
the 30s, and we could still see a couple more degrees shaved off
of that prior to daybreak. For the day Saturday, nearby high
pressure yields light winds out of the north-northeast with mostly
sunny to partly cloudy skies and afternoon highs once again around
10 degrees below seasonal normal.

Attention then quickly shifts to a shortwave trough currently seen
on WV imagery beginning its dive into the Desert Southwest and
eventually towards the Southern Plains. As this feature slides
east on Sunday, surface low pressure is induced along the NW Gulf
coast. Energy/lift associated with these features spills over the
region, with precipitation overspreading the region from west to
east through the afternoon/evening in the form of a cold rain.
Biggest questions still lie in the overnight period in regards to
what, if any, wintry precipitation may be encountered, and if it
has the potential to accumulate. Unfortunately, the answer to
that question is still pretty muddy at this time. At the very
least, guidance continues to suggest thermodynamic profiles will
at least be somewhat supportive for a period of wintry
precipitation after midnight, with the better chances still north
of roughly the HWY-190 line. The type of wintry precipitation is
also still a bit of a question. DGZ will be somewhat saturated for
a time, but warm nose with surface temps also above freezing will
severely limit what snow is capable of reaching the ground. Some
guidance also suggesting a combination of WAA around 850mb with
enough CAA below that for another freezing layer, which would more
than likely result in some sleet/IP mixing in. At the moment,
surface temps continue to appear to remain just above freezing,
which would help reduce the freezing rain threat, though
bridges/elevated surfaces could still be at risk, especially if
temps dip a bit below the current forecast. Any accumulations are
also going to naturally depend on the p-type question, and as such
may result in a pretty sharp gradient between "some" and "none"
which is reflected by the deterministic solutions of ensemble
members and operational guidance. At this time, thinking the
better shot at accumulations will remain north of our CWA, but did
leave between around a trace to a half inch of snow accumulation
in the northern half of our northern tier of counties/parishes.
This falls below Winter Storm Watch criteria for the region, but
if current forecast trends hold, an advisory may be necessitated
in upcoming forecasts. Ultimately the exact strength, placement,
and movement of the trough/low will yield the answer, but subtle
differences can lead to big differences in the outcome, and thus
this forecast still has a pretty significant degree of
uncertainty.

Precipitation tapers off by early Monday as the low and shortwave
slide east, with fairly benign conditions thereafter. Flow aloft
becomes fairly zonal, and high pressure remains in close enough
proximity at the surface to keep conditions dry. Temperatures
start off quite cool for the start of the week, with a moderating
trend leading to temperatures near seasonal normals by the end of
the work week.

Light N to NE winds Saturday pick up somewhat and become ENE
overnight. Winds shift back to NE for Sunday and become quite
moderate, ultimately shifting around an area of surface low
pressure set to slide eastward in the northern Gulf late Sunday
into early Monday. Rain is also expected late Sunday into early
Monday as this low passes. Small craft advisories are likely to
be needed, and Gale warnings are possible. Surface high pressure
dominates the weather for the remainder of the week with dry
conditions and offshore flow becoming lighter by tuesday.
