AVIATION...
Showers and low-level clouds are currently present across much of
the area with widespread IFR/LIFR. Ceilings will lift after dawn
but MVFR ceilings will be expected throughout the day with IFR
being possible. Showers and more consistent heavier rain will be
expected today, mostly for the eastern terminals. A few
thunderstorms will be possible but chances will be low. Low-level
clouds will be expected early tomorrow morning as well with
IFR/LIFR being possible. Fog will be possible early tomorrow
morning.

DISCUSSION...

SHORT TERM [Today through 12Z Sunday]...

Significant precipitation chances will be expected this morning
through the evening, most notably for eastern parts of our area.
With the lingering remnants of the prior tropical system Nicholas
providing additional energy and continued onshore flow for eastern
parts bringing moisture, showers and thunderstorms will be expected.
Soil Moisture content (RSM 0-100 cm) remains high for eastern parts
of the area so there will be a marginal concern for flooding over
the next few days for eastern parts. The Flash Flood Watch and
Coastal Flood Advisory have been dropped since the remnants of
Nicholas no longer pose a significant threat to our area.

Daytime high temperatures will continue to increase over the next
few days as the remnants of Nicholas continue to dissipate and we
return to a more typical pattern. Significant daytime precipitation
chances will continue to the end of the period with consistent light
onshore flow and daytime heating supporting shower and thunderstorm
development.

LONG TERM [Sunday through Wednesday]...

Long range period will begin with a trof axis along or just west of
the Sabine River Valley, a combination of the ghost of Nicholas and
a weak mid latitude shortwave trapped between two ridge centers over
the Desert SW and ERN Gulf. This weak trof is progged to gradually
lift out MON into TUE ahead of a robust upper trof traversing the
northern CONUS. While there are some timing and amplitude
differences among the global models with regard to the latter, there
is generally good agreement at this time for a cold front to at
least enter the forecast area on WED. Should it push through as
shown by the CMC and ECMWF, then a welcome break from the wet
weather pattern expected SUN through WED would be on tap for THU. If
and until then, however, good chances of showers and thunderstorms
will be the rule through the long term period, with high
temperatures near or just below seasonal normals and lows a little
above.

MARINE...

The remnants of tropical system Nicholas will continue drifting
across southern Louisiana today. As the system continues to
weaken, winds and seas will continue subsiding and will remain
low into the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms will be possible
over the next few days with the highest chances for eastern
offshore areas.

As of September 14th, the Lake Charles Regional Airport received
62.06 inches of precipitation in 2021 which surpasses its average
annual rainfall accumulation of 59.75 inches. This site is on pace
to become one of the wettest years on record.
