A typical summer morning with some patchy mist and associated VIS
reductions along with light and variable to calm winds. Winds
slowly gain a more southerly component by the afternoon, and a few
isolated thunderstorms are possible at the southern terminals.
Other than this mornings mist and any afternoon storms, conditions
expected to prevail VFR. Any convection should begin to wane by
the evening, giving way to another typical summer night... That
is, light and variable winds becoming calm, with the potential for
some patchy mist/fog after midnight. At this time, not enough
confidence/coverage to include VIS reductions in the TAFs.

DISCUSSION...

SHORT TERM [Today through Sunday Night]...

Another night similar to the last several with some nocturnal
showers and thunderstorms noted over the Gulf of Mexico, and
observations indicating patchy fog/mist in portions of the inland
area. Given the calm conditions, could see this expand a bit
prior to sunrise. Guidance a little more bullish in this regard as
well, mostly north of the I-10 corridor. Still, expect any extra
development to remain patchy in nature and not overly dense.

For today, the primary forecast element continues to be a broad
upper level high centered in the central Plains, the influence of
which will definitely be felt locally. To that end, today looks to
have the potential to be the hottest day thus far of 2021... Or, at
least when taking dew points into consideration, it'll feel like the
hottest so far. For portions of central Louisiana this afternoon,
forecast heat index values are in the 110-115 range for a number of
hours, where elsewhere heat index values up to 110 are still
expected. Given the possibility of the heat index exceeding 113
degrees, the Heat Advisory in Rapides/Avoyelles/St. Landry Parish
was upgraded to an Excessive Heat Warning. For the remainder of the
area, a Heat Advisory remains in effect this afternoon. Still a
couple uncertainties to the forecast though. For one, mixing in
spots will knock the dew point down a bit, which will have the
potential to prevent heat indices from climbing accordingly. Second
is the potential for afternoon convection. Like the last couple of
days, dry air looks to wrap around the upper high, and forecast
soundings show a fairly notable layer of dry air above 700mb, and
especially above 500mb. This should help limit convection, and CAM
guidance accordingly shows very little activity outside of maybe the
near-coastal seabreeze. In any case, despite the exact numbers, it
WILL be hot areawide today, and as always you should take heat
related precautions. Stay hydrated, take frequent breaks if
possible, and find some means to cool off especially if spending
much time outdoors.

On Saturday, the upper high remains largely in tact, though it
begins to feel the effects of amplification into greater troughing
digging into the eastern CONUS. Locally, the forecast temps/dew
points come in similar to today, and a Heat Advisory will likely be
necessitated. PoPs however do come in a bit higher due to an
inverted trough/wave feature sliding westward along the Gulf coast.
GFS still comes in a bit stronger with the feature than the ECMWF,
but in any case, a better signal for a bit more convection is
evident which leads to at least a chance of tackling some of the
afternoon heat.

Sunday, the east CONUS trough continues to amplify and dig south
with increasing height falls, while the upper high gets shunted back
towards the intermountain west. Light southwest flow around a
surface ridge in the northeast Gulf of Mexico keeps moisture locked
in place over the region, and in combination with the increased
troughing, expecting at least a little more scattered
shower/thunderstorm activity. Aside from any rain or cloud related
relief though, still looks like at least one more hot afternoon on
Sunday.

LONG TERM [Monday through Thursday]...

Monday will start out generally as a continuation of the weekend,
with warm an muggy conditions prevailing amid above normal low
temperatures. W/SW flow at the SFC will continue through the day
ahead of an approaching unusual August cold front being driven south
by a digging ERN CONUS trof. Scattered to numerous showers and
thunderstorms are expected ahead of and along the front, which is
expected to sink into interior SE TX and Central LA MON afternoon or
evening. Afternoon temperatures will be moderated closer to seasonal
normals by the increase in cloud cover and convective activity.

The front will continue to slowly ooze through the area MON night
and TUE, reaching the nearshore coastal waters by WED morning. Very
high rain chances are forecast along and south of the boundary
through this time period, with rains easing off north of it thanks
to some relatively drier air filtering in. How far south this dry
wedge reaches is uncertain at this time, with the ECMWF depicting a
stronger/deeper upper trof and thus a greater intrusion of drier
air. Should this solution materialize, current PoPs TUE night
through THU could well be overdone, particularly for the northern
half or so of the area. As for temperatures, readings will be
moderated a little below seasonal normals by both the increase in
clouds/PCPN and the drier and slightly cooler air.

Light onshore flow is expected through early next week. Expect
daily chances for scattered showers and thunderstorms, with more
widespread activity expected Sunday/Monday/Tuesday as a frontal
boundary slowly moves south. Locally higher winds and seas, along
with cloud to water lightning can be expected near the storms.

An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through the afternoon hours
into the early evening for portions of central Louisiana. Heat index
values will rise above 100 degrees, and heat index values as high as
110 to 115 will be possible for a number of hours. Hot temperatures
and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur if heat related
precautions aren't taken.
