Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED National Weather Service North Platte NE 524 AM CST Fri Feb 12 2021 .SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday) Issued at 346 AM CST Fri Feb 12 2021 Active weather in the form of snow and cold temperatures will be the main story through the short term. An upper level low across southern Canada will drive several rounds of shortwaves across Nebraska and the central Plains the next few days. The first round is already impacting portions of north central Nebraska at this time, however, the majority of the snow will not arrive until this afternoon. Similar to last weekend's winter storm, there will be a band of heavier snow as a narrow area of frontogenesis develops. While it appears this band will set up across the central Sandhills (along the Highway 2 corridor), there is still some uncertainty where this band will ultimately set up. Any slight deviation could result in significant changes in snowfall totals. Under this heavier band, up to 5 inches could be observed with amounts tapering both to the north and south. Snow is expected to last through day and into Friday night, before tapering off Saturday morning. Saturday, while cloudy, is expected to remain fairly quiet before the next disturbance moves in on Saturday night. As far as temperatures go, temperatures will be quite cold, although not as cold as they could be. The arctic airmass along with snow cover from last weeks storm will drastically drop overnight temperatures. However, cloudy skies will keep temperatures from dropping too much as diurnal heating remains trapped below the clouds and therefore keeps temperatures relatively 'warm' for Saturday morning. Any way you look at, though, it will still be very cold with low temperatures still dropping into the negative single digits with wind chills in the negative teens. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 346 AM CST Fri Feb 12 2021 The next system arrives Saturday night bringing accumulating snow to the region once again. Surface high pressure will be building south, which will push the majority of the precipitation to the south across Kansas. Despite this, the southern half of the forecast area (mainly south of Highway 2) will be grazed by some light accumulating snowfall with the heaviest amounts across the southwest. Latest model trends have had a slight shift to the south with this precipitation. There is a real concern that this trend may continue over the next couple forecast cycles and more dry air will filter in as the high builds into the region. This could in turn have some dramatic affects on the snowfall forecast. If this happens, it could mean we don't see any snow as it gets pushed further to the south, or the gradient across the north going from zero to 3 inches may become tighter across north central Nebraska. At this time, snowfall up to a half inch is forecasted all the way up to almost US-20. If trends continue, these areas across the north may not see any snow and the steepest gradient will occur further to the south. Will be closely monitoring this over the next day or so and will make adjustments to the going forecast if needed. In addition to snow, bitterly cold temperatures continue into early next week. The coldest morning will likely be Monday morning as clouds clear out and temperatures are allowed to drop into the negative 20s. Winds will generally be under 10 mph resulting in wind chills ranging from negative 20 across south central Nebraska to as low as negative 35 across the Pine Ridge region. At this time will keep our wind chill advisory, but if these numbers continue to hold up, we will likely need to issue a wind chill warning. Strong upper level ridging across the western US will then allow for fairly quiet weather to return for Monday through Thursday. Precipitation remains out of our area and temperatures moderate back into the 30s for highs and lows in the upper single digits to low teens by Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 524 AM CST Fri Feb 12 2021 IFR/LIFR in snow and low ceilings is expected to become fairly widespread this morning affecting the Sandhills of western and north central Nebraska. This flight concern is expected to continue this evening with some improvement in visibility after 06z tonight. && .LBF WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
