A forecast update is in place for slightly warmer temperatures
overnight using the short term model blend plus bias correction.
Increasing cloudiness is underway and this should promote mixing
and allow surface winds to stay up. The modest surface winds and
increase in cloud cover should limit radiational cooling.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Friday night)

The primary forecast challenge centers on temperatures and the
threat for multiple periods of light snow through early next week.

Period begins with highly amplified flow as troughing that brought
us rain and snow overnight this morning quickly departs to the east
and mid-level ridging develops across the West Coast. A small plume
of drier air has worked into the area this afternoon which has
helped lead to dry conditions and clearing skies across much of the
region. Areas of cumulus are bubbling over the higher terrain over
western South Dakota through western Kansas. This is occurring in an
area of modest mid-level lapse rates and should diminish with loss
of daytime heating. Within the northwest mid-level flow will be a
couple pulses of energy. While moisture should increase slightly off
the surface, lift will remain weak. As a result, opted to remove the
flurries/light snow mention for the morning hours across the
Sandhills. Have overnight lows tonight falling into the teens and
low 20s across the area. High pressure will push a backdoor cool
front through the area during the day Friday. This will put a large
temperature gradient across the area with highs approaching the mid
40s for our far southwest zones while only reaching the mid 20s near
the Missouri River under partly to mostly cloudy skies across the
area. Heading into Friday evening, isentropic lift on the 285k
surface will increase as a weak surface low develops across
southeast Wyoming into northeast Colorado. Modest troughing aloft
will move through the area heading into early Saturday morning,
leading to increased forcing for ascent by way of warm-air advection
and fgen in the h85-h7 layer. This will lead to the area's first
real potential for accumulating snow. The GFS has been the biggest
proponent of this potential with a fairly impressive band of
frontogenesis passing through the area in the 00z-15z timeframe
Saturday. With precise QPF forecast in question, it's worth
mentioning the consensus between the NAM and GFS regarding potential
for liquid precipitation amounts to approach a quarter inch or
higher while the Euro lags behind. The current forecast more closely
aligns with the Euro solution, which limits amounts to around 0.15"
or less. W.r.t. ensemble guidance, this lines up with the EPS as well
but falls short of of the GEFS and SREF mean values. Individual SREF
members show tight clustering in two pockets...one around 0.05" and
one around 0.2". Given the magnitude of forcing advertised by the
NAM and GFS, I do believe this forecast is a bit conservative but
will leave to subsequent forecasts to adjust should guidance hone in
on higher or lower amounts after coordination with neighboring
offices. Given this, thinking snow amounts will peak around 1-2" of
light, fluffy snow, but this could increase with later forecasts.
Highs Saturday will fall across the board, with values in the low
teens across north central Nebraska to the low 30s in the far
southwest. Precipitation will end Saturday afternoon as fgen wanes
and the trough axis clears the area to the east.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Thursday)

Beginning 00z Sunday. Period begins with northwest flow aloft
following the passage of the trough axis. The region will still
reside under the northern stream jet, and with that a few
disturbances will push through the area Sunday into Monday. The
first will pass through Saturday evening into Sunday morning. NWP
output is in fairly good agreement with a developing a northwest to
southeast oriented snowband across the Sandhills into central
Nebraska. This is largely tied to strong warm-air advection in the
vicinity of a weak warm front, coincident with weak mid-level
vorticity advection. Biggest question with respect to this round of
snow will be southward extent as moisture availability rapidly
decreases with southward extent. Utilizing the model blend has
increased PoPs slight with the introduction of the "Likely" category
across north central Nebraska. This lines up with a blend of the
EPS, GEFS, and SREF output but may be hedging a bit north of what
the deterministics solutions suggest. At this time, will leave PoPs
as they are as any changes would be minimal. Forcing for ascent will
rapidly diminish through the late morning on Sunday, therefore this
narrow band will quickly subside by midday. Initial thoughts are for
QPF in the a few hundredths on the fringes of the stronger forcing
to perhaps around a quarter of an inch underneath the
frontogenetical band. This would easily translate to upwards of 2-3"
of snow given the magnitude of cold air in place...highs ranging
from the low 30s in the far southwest to the single digits across
north central Nebraska.

A second quick moving disturbance will approach from the west late
Sunday into Monday. This system will likely have better upper-level
support across the local area but more limited moisture. This shows
up as greater discrepancies between the EPS and GEFS on
probabilities of 1" or greater snow with the EPS only advertising
30% while the GEFS shows probabilities as high as 60%. This is
likely due to the GFS being much stronger with the mid-level wave
and quicker with the approach of the upper-level jet. It is also
further north with the warm front. Either way, confidence in this
second round is much lower therefore the forecast is subject to
change until NWP guidance hones in on a better consensus. As high
pressure builds in once again towards the middle of the week, expect
to see temperatures well below normal and likely limited to single
digits to low 20s northeast to southwest each day Monday through
Thursday. Additional chances for precipitation will exist Tuesday
through Thursday, however, no one disturbance appears to be overly
significant so expect just low-end PoPs with light to perhaps
moderate snow at best.

Regarding the expected cold temperatures...with h85 temperatures
approaching anomalies of -10 to -20 degrees C through Valentine's
Day, expecting morning lows to fall near or below zero each morning.
Given air temperatures that cool, any wind the develops in the
morning will drive wind chill values into the negative teens and
potentially as low as the negative 20s, which would be wind chill
advisory criteria. Given general high pressure in place, limiting
factor each morning would be winds and how strong they manage to
get. At this time, not seeing any glaring signal of strong winds any
particular morning therefore any confidence of reaching criteria at
this time is fairly modest. Regardless, with air temperatures
falling below zero, prolonged exposure to these temperatures will be
enough to lead to issues therefore will plan to keep hitting the
messaging hard regarding this threat.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and
north central Nebraska.

No hazardous weather conditions are expected tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...FRIDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

An arctic cold front will push into the region Friday night. Light
snow will be possible Friday night, and again Saturday night into
Sunday. Another round of snow is possible Sunday night into
Monday. At this time, snow accumulations are expected to be fairly
light, however, this could change as we head into the weekend.
Much colder temperatures are expected this weekend into next week
as the area will see its coldest temperatures so far this winter
season. Wind chills Monday morning, Tuesday morning and Wednesday
morning, will range from 10 below zero to as much as 25 below
zero.
