.SHORT TERM...(Today through Tuesday Night)

The primary forecast challenge centers on a long duration snow event
beginning tonight and lasting through Tuesday night. This package
includes a Winter Storm Watch for portions of the area.

Surface high pressure currently sits east of the area with southerly
flow on the back side of this feature is working to advect some
higher moisture into the area ahead of the next system. Expecting a
generally dry day on Sunday across the area with shortwave ridging
building in. While modest warm air advection will be occurring
across the region, with mostly cloudy skies expected, temperatures
will struggle to climb out of the upper 20s with the warmest
locations only reaching the low 30s. A strong upper-level
disturbance currently digging across the Desert Southwest will begin
to track east and eject with a negative tilt onto the Southern
Plains late Sunday into early Monday. Extended hi-res guidance with
support from the NAM and NAM Nest suggest the potential for some
light snow beginning Sunday evening. This is likely tied to some
vort maxes ejecting ahead of the main trough. Though fairly small in
spatial coverage, will add some slight chance PoPs to cover this
potential early on. Thinking PoPs will ramp up quickly through the
morning on Monday as forcing for ascent increases and a surface low
in the 990-1000 hPa range takes shape across southern Kansas.
Initially, isentropic lift...particularly in the 285-295k
surfaces...will lead to low-level saturation with mid-level
saturation arriving later as upper-level divergence increases and we
start to see the h7 low develop to the southeast. With this in mind,
do believe there is the potential for a wintry mix Monday morning
with snow and patchy freezing drizzle. Believe the freezing drizzle
threat is fairly low with limited if any ice accumulations. Will see
the profile fully saturate by the afternoon Monday bringing a swift
end to any mix and leading to all snow for the remainder of the
event. With the surface low expected to track somewhere along a
Wichita to Kansas City line, the main mechanism for precipitation
locally will be wrap-around associated with the TROWAL and and
isentropic lift. This event is expected to be a long duration light
event with snow rates not expected to exceed 0.5" per hour. With
that said and given the expected time frame, total snow amounts will
be in the moderate to heavy range. While the NAM and ECMWF are in
fairly good agreement with respect to the event, the GFS is the
clear outlier with lighter QPF amounts. In agreement with WPC
guidance on more closely aligning with the NAM/ECMWF/EPS output. As
the best upper-level dynamics shift east by late Monday, will see
precipitation support switch to isentropic lift and some modest
orographic lift as winds turn to the east and become more upslope
flow. Heading into early Tuesday, a second upper-level
disturbance...one that began digging along the West Coast
Monday...will eject onto the central Plains. This will lead to
additional snow chances lasting through Tuesday evening as another
h7 low takes shape across eastern Nebraska. While forcing for ascent
from this second system is expected to be fairly strong as well,
moisture quality will have been depleted from the departing first
system. Therefore, the tradeoff will limit snow accumulations
through the day Tuesday with the continued expectation of snow rates
to remain around or less than 0.5" per hour. Height rises will begin
quickly by early Wednesday morning, therefore thinking precipitation
will quickly end west to east prior to sunrise. Regarding
precipitation totals...liquid QPF amounts are likely to reach a
quarter inch or more across much of the area with some locations
closer to south central Nebraska approaching a half inch. This is in
line with but slightly lower than NAM/ECMWF deterministics and EPS
mean while slightly higher than the GFS deterministic and GEFS mean.
This will mean total snow amounts over 48 hours will range from 4-8"
across portions of central and Southwest Nebraska (the Watch area)
to 2-4" elsewhere. Temperatures through this event are unlikely to
vary much with lows generally in the 20s Monday morning but falling
into the single digits and teens Tuesday and Wednesday. Highs Sunday
and Monday will reach the 20s and 30s with widespread 20s by
Tuesday.

.LONG TERM...(Wednesday through Saturday)

Beginning 12z Wednesday. Shortwave ridging will build in during the
day Wednesday, which will lead to a dry day and warming
temperatures. Ridging peaks Friday as another deep trough approaches
the West Coast during the day. As such, temperatures will trend up
through then though lingering snow cover may hamper this somewhat so
reasonably could see high temperatures be lowered with later
forecast packages. The aforementioned trough will approach the area
in the Saturday-Sunday time frame which may lead to additional
chances at precipitation across the area. Utilizing the model blend
gave no PoPs over the weekend, but I expect that to change in the
coming days though the brunt of any potential system may remain just
east of us therefore not lead to any significant impacts. The
weather pattern appears to remain active heading into the following
week.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)

MVFR conditions will last through the afternoon and evening for
western and north central Nebraska, with local IFR conditions
mixed in. Around midnight, conditions will deteriorate to
widespread IFR as ceilings lower. Light snow is expected to
spread into southwest Nebraska at this time, impacting KLBF in the
early morning hours. Visibility will worsen in the area as light
snow coverage spreads. Winds will shift from the east to the north
through the forecast period.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of western and
north central Nebraska.

.DAY ONE...THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT.

A Winter Storm Watch goes into effect late tonight. Snow is
expected to develop late tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY.

A Winter Storm Watch will remain in effect into Tuesday evening.
Mainly light snow is expected to fall through Tuesday evening
across the Sandhills into southwest and central Nebraska. This
appears to be a long duration mainly light snow event.
Accumulation will add up though, with 4 to 8 inches possible by
the time the storm is finished Tuesday night. The track of the
system will be monitored as any shift to the northwest would mean
heavier snow accumulation.
