Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 639 AM EDT Sun Jul 4 2021 .DISCUSSION... Weather has remained quiet throughout the overnight across the region, thanks to deep layer ridging in place. The 06Z RAOB sounding continues to show a drying trend with a PWat of around 1.59 inches, which is down from the 00Z RAOB. With that said, isolated showers between the Upper Keys and Andros Island are drifting westward but are falling apart before reaching the outer Straits of Florida. Outside of this, there has hardly been any clouds save from some debris blowing off Cuba from earlier convection. These clouds have too struggled to maintain themselves as they lift northward across the Straits of Florida. Deep layer ridging will hold in place today and as such, have nudged PoPs down to 10 percent. Best chances will be the Florida Bay and Upper Keys, where a northeast steering flow may allow for convection to drift off the mainland. This however, is dependent on the relatively drier air and subsidence in place. As Tropical Storm Elsa approaches the southern coast of Cuba later today, moisture will begin to filter in from the east. This combined with some lift in the lower levels may be enough to trigger showers and isolated thunderstorms Sunday evening. Thereafter, Tropical Storm Elsa is expected to impact the Florida Keys, with the primary impacts occurring between Monday afternoon and Tuesday. A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect from Craig Key West to the Dry Tortugas, as Elsa is forecast to track west of Key West Monday evening. Rain chances will quickly increase through the day Monday and peak Monday night into Tuesday morning. In addition to the wind threat, locally heavy rainfall is possible, especially Monday night into through Tuesday morning. Lastly, given that the center of Elsa will pass to the west of the Lower Keys, the tornado threat is not nil. Residents and visitors are encouraged to make final preparations today ahead of Elsa, planning for up to strong tropical storm conditions. Elsa will move out of the CWA by Tuesday afternoon. However, a strong tail of southerly flow may lead to continued shower and thunderstorm activity through at least Tuesday evening. Thereafter, a ridge of high pressure will build back in from the east. This will allow for deep easterly winds to return along with pockets of moisture at times. This will maintain rain chances near or slightly below normal through the remainder of the forecast period. && .MARINE... A Tropical Storm Watch remains in effect for the coastal waters adjacent and offshore of the Lower and Middle Keys. A Small Craft Advisory will likely be required for the adjacent and offshore waters of the Upper Keys by Sunday night or Monday. Light northeast to east breezes prevail across the area this morning and into the afternoon. By this evening, breezes will gradually freshen and clock around to the northeast and east. Thereafter, Tropical Storm Elsa is forecast to impact the Florida Keys waters as a tropical storm from Monday into Tuesday. While there is increasing confidence in the general track for Elsa, uncertainty remains high in the intensity forecast.
