Fragments of low level moisture from an old frontal boundary will
continue to be transported across the region in the prevailing east
to northeast wind flow. Some of these showers will be slightly
enhanced by a weak upper trough just northeast of the region, and
may reach portions of the north and east coastal areas of PR and
mainly the northern U.S. Virgin islands from time to time. However,
no significant rainfall accumulations are anticipated. Otherwise
no change to the inherited short term forecast and reasoning at
this time.

.MARINE UPDATE...No change to the previous marine discussion based
on most of the recent data from the surrounding buoys. However,
data from the 41043 buoy NE of Puerto Rico suggests seas now
fluctuating up to 6 feet or so at 9 second period and will continue
to monitor overnight. For now still expect seas up to 5 feet over
the local offshore Atlantic, but occasionally up to 6 feet and
less than 5 feet over the near shore and local passages during the
overnight hours. The moderate winds offshore and in the local passages
will continue to promote a moderate wind chop.

the region through late tonight, increasing cloud coverage and
bringing isolated to scattered showers at times. After that,
expect improved weather conditions with decreasing available
moisture and unfavorable conditions aloft through early next week.
By midweek, increasing winds and a northerly swell will cause
choppy to hazardous marine conditions.

A mid-to-upper level ridge extending over the northeastern
Caribbean and decreasing available moisture will lead to limited
shower activity and, thus, an improvement of the local weather
conditions during the short-term forecast period. Yet, moisture
from an old frontal boundary, with satellite-estimated
precipitable water of 1.5 to 1.6 inches, will stream across the
region tonight, increasing cloud coverage and bringing showers to
portions of northern and eastern Puerto Rico, as well as the U.S.
Virgin Islands. After that, relatively drier air will quickly
follow, with model-estimated precipitable water falling as low as
1.10 inches by Monday. Under a cooling advective pattern, trade
wind showers cannot be ruled out, mainly during the evening-early
morning hours. Afternoon convection, if any, will cluster across
the interior and southwestern quadrant of the islands. Moderate
easterly winds will continue through Sunday, backing from the
northeast as a surface high pressure approaches the northeastern
Caribbean from the northwest on Monday. This northeasterly flow
could lead to slightly cooler temperatures, especially with clear
skies, with overnight lows falling into the lower 50s and daytime
highs peaking into the lower 80s.
LONG TERM...Tuesday through Saturday...
High pressure at the surface drifts slowly southeast from a
position of 29 degrees north and north of the Dominican Republic.
This high pressure will help guide weak pre-frontal troughs and
finally the front itself, associated with an area of lower
pressure in the central Atlantic, which is really a series of lows
developing and rotating around a nearly stationary space. The
final frontal passage is expected on Wednesday, but moisture
behind the front will continue to yield considerable shallow
shower activity. The 700 mb picture is somewhat different, the
bands of moisture do not reach the local area, and the GFS does
not show moisture at that level for the local area for the rest of
the period. In fact, mid and upper levels will remain dry with
less than 20 percent relative humidity for the entire week and
following weekend.
At upper levels, there is a weak east west trough holding over the
area from Monday, but it moves rapidly east, such that flow will
be northwesterly through the weekend and generally convergent.
Stronger east northeast surface winds and the shallow moist layer
will, however, bring persistent widely scattered light showers to
the area the period that will bring amounts of one to three
quarters of an inch to the windward coasts and slopes of Puerto
Rico during the period. The U.S. Virgin Islands will likely see
less than one half inch Tuesday through Sunday.
AVIATION...Mostly VFR conds are expected to prevail at all TAF sites
with VCSH possible at the Leeward and USVI terminals as well as JSJ.
Winds generally out of the northeast, with sea breeze variations and
speed of around 10 to 15 knots through at least 25/22z
MARINE...Seas of 5 feet or below will prevail through at least
Monday, deteriorating due to increasing winds and a small
northeasterly swell arrival after that.
There is a high risk of rip currents for beaches across the
northwest to the northeast coast of Puerto Rico, the northern
coast of Culebra, and the eastern coast of St Croix. A moderate
risk continues for most of the remaining beaches in Puerto Rico
and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
