Just a quick update to the near term grids per the latest obs and
trends for T/Td - including radar and satellite for PoP/Sky.
These grids have been sent to the NDFD and web servers.

UPDATE Issued at 1230 AM EDT SUN AUG 1 2021

Fine-tuned the PoPs according to radar, satellite, and higher
resolution model guidance trends. Most of the colder cloud tops
and concentrated convection looks to stay just to our south. As
such, shifted the higher PoPs closer to the Tennessee border
overnight. The rest of the forecast generally remains on track.

UPDATE Issued at 826 PM EDT SAT JUL 31 2021

Light showers have been moving in across the northern half of the
area early this evening, as a passing mid-level short wave trough
traverses the Ohio Valley. Instability is weak up north, and this
should not change much as we head into the night. As such, will
drop the thunder chances generally north of the Hal Rogers and
Highway 80 corridor. Further south, broad low pressure is seen
across western KY/TN and into the middle Mississippi Valley, with
a stationary frontal boundary arced to the southeast. Convection
is starting to initiate near these features, with scattered shower
activity popping up across south central Kentucky. The current
PoPs look on track, with the best chances across our south, closer
to the vicinity of the surface boundary and better instability.
Did freshen up the hourly temperatures and dew points, accounting
for the latest trends in observations. Updates have been sent out.

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Sunday night)
Issued at 305 PM EDT SAT JUL 31 2021

Latest analysis shows continued troughing across the eastern US and
ridging over the western US and Canada. At the surface, there is a
nearly stationary boundary to our south and west, with several areas
of low pressure along the front. Surface high pressure is to our NW
over central Illinois. Some light rain is starting to move into the
area from a decaying MCS and subtle shortwave that will pass across
the area this evening. Back to our west over SE MO, southern IL, and
SW KY, convection is firing up along another subtle shortwave this
afternoon. This feature will pass across southern KY or just to our
south late tonight and overnight. This system will bring showers and
thunderstorms to the area late tonight through early tomorrow
morning. with the highest pops from 03-12Z over the southern half of
the area. There is still a bit of uncertainty regarding timing and
placement of this system overnight, but continued to follow the
ensemble means and place the likely pops along and south of the Hal
Rogers Parkway. WPC has a marginal risk for excessive rain across
the SW counties, although in reality any place that saw significant
rainfall a couple days ago will need to be watched because any
additional heavy rain may result in flooding concerns. Overnight low
temps will be a bit warmer than last night, ranging from the low to
mid 60s across the north and mid to upper 60s across the south.

Shower/storm chances taper off from NW to SE Sunday morning into the
early afternoon as the disturbance moves S/SE away from the area. A
weakening cold front associated with low pressure moving from the
Great Lakes into New England will approach the area from the N/NW
during the late afternoon into the evening, which may touch off a
few showers or storms across the north, but overall it will be a
drier trend across the area. Continued cooler temps on Sunday with
highs in the lower 80s. High pressure builds in from the NW Sunday
night with clearing skies overnight into Monday morning. Comfortable
low temps in the upper 50s to lower 60s with some patchy fog
developing towards morning.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 417 PM EDT SAT JUL 31 2021

Troughing will be the story of the extended for much of the eastern
half of the Conus. A closed low will develop in the troughing
pattern and strengthen across the Ohio Valley Wednesday and
Thursday. As it exits to the NE Thursday night, another shortwave
will move into place across the region for Saturday.

At the surface, a broad area of high pressure will be in place
across the Ohio Valley for the duration of the period, despite the
upper level flow. A surface front will be draped to our south, more
along the base of the troughing, with a surface low to our east.
Precip is expected along the boundary and surface low, and will be
enhanced with the upper level energy moving over, and daytime
heating. The result could be some expansion of the precip chances
into the eastern portion of the state during peak heating. There is
still quite a bit of disagreement as to the exact location/expanse
of this precip, so kept with the NBM pops at this time, with
generally slight to chance pops. Without a strong boundary/change in
airmass, not expecting much in the way of instability or severity of
any storms that develop...likely more pulsy in nature.

With the continued trough across the region, NW flow will keep
temperatures below seasonal normals to start the period. Upper 70s
to low 80s are forecast for Monday afternoon, but will moderate a
degree or two warmer each day. By the time you get to Friday and
Saturday, the surface high shifts just east of the state, and light
return flow takes hold near the surface, with temps boosting into
the mid and upper 80s.

ISSUED AT 215 AM EDT SUN AUG 1 2021

General VFR conditions will gradually worsen through the next few
hours resulting in MVFR ceilings/visibilities across the area
overnight, lingering longest south of the I-64 corridor with
KSME and KLOZ likely seeing the longest duration of restrictions.
MVFR ceilings/visibilities will improve to VFR by later this
morning as the system to our south exits. Light northwesterly
winds will increase to between 5 to 8 kts late this morning.
