AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION...UPDATED National Weather Service Jackson KY 110 PM EST Fri Feb 26 2021 .UPDATE... Issued at 1145 AM EST FRI FEB 26 2021 Hourly grids were updated based on recent observations and trends. This led to no substantive changes at this time. Rain is spreading into the southern counties and as the lower levels continue to saturate this afternoon, rain should expand to encompass most of the region by mid afternoon. UPDATE Issued at 731 AM EST FRI FEB 26 2021 Precipitation has been a bit slow to come northward in TN early this morning, so did update to slow down the arrival of precipitation a bit. However, still looks like a solid area of rain pushing across the area by this afternoon. Also updated to blend current temperatures into the forecast. && .SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday) Issued at 347 AM EST FRI FEB 26 2021 A shortwave trough is pushing northeast across the lower Mississippi river valley early this morning with widespread rain noted across northern Alabama/Mississipi, back into Arkansas. A strong surface high remains anchored just to the northeast of the region. Weak return flow has kept temperatures generally mild through the overnight hours, but a few of the more sheltered valleys have managed to dip down just below freezing. Return flow is expected to continue to increase through dawn and should eventually scour out any remaining sub-freezing temperatures. As the shortwave trough lifts northeast across our region today, it is expected to be dampening with time. However, it will still provide a push of pretty decent moisture return allowing for a brief period of widespread rainfall to the area by this afternoon. With southeast flow, still some question on how much rainfall will materialize, but there is a pretty decent chance most areas at least see a wetting rain this afternoon. However, its quite possible the QPF from the models of around 0.20 gets cut in half and ends up closer to 0.10 for most areas. It appears likely we will see a lull in precipitation chances this evening as a shortwave ridge pushes across the area. However, this lull will be brief as vort lobe quickly pushes into the area by late tonight with widespread rain again overspreading the coal fields. Ample moisture return will provide some hefty rain totals late tonight, but should generally remain less than 0.75" with the round late tonight. A stalled frontal zone will reside across southeast Kentucky through much of tomorrow, aiding in continued rain chances through Saturday. However, a slight increase in heights could provide a relative lull in rain chances late Saturday morning through the afternoon. Given all the expected clouds and precipitation over the next 36 hours, stayed very close to the raw model guidance which keeps highs a bit cooler and lows a bit milder overall. .LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday) Issued at 548 AM EST FRI FEB 26 2021 There is relatively good agreement among models for big picture for our area through early next week. A frontal boundary stalled to our south will be drawn north into KY as a warm front Saturday night and Sunday as low pressure passes northeast over the Great Lakes. Aloft, a trough will sharpen over the southwest CONUS, setting up a long southwesterly fetch aloft for our area. The scenario will result in ample deep overrunning moisture favorable for heavy rainfall. At this point, when/where the heaviest rain falls is uncertain, with model variability still present in the details. Hydro products may be needed. Weak instability is also a possibility, with deep convection potentially helping to add to the rain totals. A cold front trailing from the departing low will sweep through from northwest to southeast late sunday and sunday night as a potent upper level trough drops southeast over the Great Lakes. This puts an end to our precip on Monday. A stronger burst of cold and dry air then arrives Monday afternoon or night, but with a lack of moisture, little weather should be associated with it. Cold high pressure then moves southeast over our area late Monday night into tuesday. Models show much more discrepancy to finish out the long term period. A remnant upper low from the aforementioned southwest CONUS upper trough is expected to weaken and get carried along by the flow aloft at midweek, but an uncertain track leaves some questions for our local forecast. At this point, a peak POP in the chance category is being used, centered on Tuesday night. At that same time, the next system upstream is causing model headaches. The GFS closes off an upper low over the southwest CONUS, while the ECMWF keeps an open (but substantial) wave which continues to translate east. By Thursday this results in the mid/upper level wave pattern being about 180 degrees out of phase over the eastern CONUS in the GFS compared to the ECMWF. That being the case, the blended model forecast should be expected to change before that time arrives. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon) ISSUED AT 110 PM EST FRI FEB 26 2021 MVFR and VFR conditions were observed across East KY will start the period with IFR southwest of the area over middle TN. Lowering clouds and rain continues to spread northeast across the area, with ceilings falling to MVFR within an hour or so after the rain arrives. Once MVFR develops it should prevail through about 0Z in all areas, though as the initial disturbance passes, some areas will improve to VFR for a couple hours, before the next disturbance and round of rain arrives and MVFR and IFR returns to all areas by the 6Z to 12Z period with deterioration to IFR in all areas thereafter.
