12Z TAF discussion:
A mix of VFR and MVFR conditions are ongoing this morning thanks
to low stratus. This should improve some this morning. Hurricane
Ida is nearing the Louisiana coastline and will bring rain bands
into the region this afternoon. Winds will be gusty today ahead of
the system but winds will be sustained 25-35kts and gusts at least
to 40kts later this evening into tonight as Ida moves even more
inland. The main impacts to any airport will be these gusty winds,
locally heavy downpours over the course of the next 24 hours or
longer. Conditions will deteriorate through the course of this
evening into tonight as the hurricane moves further inland. /28/

.DISCUSSION...

Hurricane Ida (Today through Tuesday):

Hurricane Ida continues to undergo explosive development early this
morning within an extremely favorable environment as it moves over
exceptionally high ocean heat content associated with the Gulf Loop
Current. As such, Ida has quickly intensified into a powerful
category 4 hurricane as it nears the Gulf Coast. Ida is being
steered northwest by stout sub-tropical ridging centered over the
Carolinas. Meanwhile, over the Northern Great Plains, a potent
shortwave trough embedded within active northern stream flow will
swing into the Great Lakes region today. This will in turn act to
weaken/flatten the Carolinas ridge allowing Ida to make a north and
eventually northeast turn as it pushes north in a weakness in the
broad ridging draped across the southern CONUS. Respective impacts
are expected across the entire area starting this afternoon and
lasting through early Tuesday morning. Individual impacts will be
discussed in more detail below.

Flooding rain threat: Slow forward motion of the weakening hurricane
will set the stage for heavy rainfall and flash flooding. Latest QPF
guidance from WPC continues to paints a swath of 4-8" of rain across
the eastern two thirds of the CWA. As Ida moves inland the system
will start to feel the influence of the westerlies which will in
turn lead to an increasingly asymmetric structure. This will shunt
the highest rainfall totals in a swath displaced east of the center.
Have adjusted the elevated threat for flooding in the HWO/graphics
for locations generally along and east of a line from Franklin
County to eastern Warren County to Grenada County. A limited threat
area will reside further west where 2-4" of rain could lead to
isolated flash flooding. Locally heavier amounts will also be
possible, especially for locations that see slow moving convergent
bands with intense rainfall rates. Here, localized totals up to 12"
cannot be ruled out. If realized, these higher totals will be most
likely across portions of southern and eastern Mississippi. If
confidence increases in placement of heavier rainfall a significant
threat area may need to be introduced in the graphics with later
forecast packages.

Wind threat: Confidence continues to increase with regards to
intensity and track as Ida rapidly intensifies prior to landfall
this afternoon. Slow forward motion will allow some degree of
weakening prior to the system making into the area, however, a large
expansive wind field will bring impacts to much of the CWA. The
strongest winds will be located over portions of northeast Louisiana
and southwest Mississippi generally along and to the right of the
center. Here, 65-75mph winds will be possible which will result in
widespread tree and power line damage. Have expanded the significant
threat area in the HWO/graphics to include Jefferson and Claiborne
counties as well as portions of Copiah and Lincoln Counties. As Ida
makes a slow northeast turn impacts will spread into northeast
portions of the CWA. Another tier of counties has been added to the
tropical storm warning to include Clarke, Newton, Neshoba, Leake,
Attala, Holmes, Humphreys and Washington. The elevated threat area
in the graphics has been expanded in turn. Forecast confidence
begins to drop off as the remnants lift into the Golden Triangle
area and how much weakening will occur by then remains yet to be
seen. It's possible that the tropical storm warning by need to be
expanded again to include the remaining counties in northeast
portions of the CWA, but will hold off for now until more data
becomes available. Remaining counties that don't end up under a
tropical storm warning will also need to be placed in a wind
advisory with subsequent forecast packages.

Tornado threat: As with any landfalling tropical cyclone, attention
will have to be paid to the potential for tornadoes embedded within
rainbands. Large low-level wind fields will support 40-45kts of 0-
1km shear and 350-450 m2/s2 of 0-1km SRH. Resulting shear profiles
will yield large hodographs that will support the potential for
tornadoes. The main limiting factor will be instability as the area
will remain beneath widespread clouds and precipitation. A few
breaks between rain bands will allow for a few hundred J/kg of
MLCAPE, which will be more than sufficient given the aforementioned
shear. The best parameter space for tornadoes will reside west of
the Mississippi River and along and south of I-20, especially over
southeast and eastern Mississippi. Have subsequently added a slight
risk area to the HWO/graphics in line with the Storm Prediction
Center's day 1 and day 2 convective outlooks.

Guidance remains tightly clustered on track, but all hurricanes
typically display wobbling with the center oftentimes deviating on
either side of the official NHC track guidance. Even a small wobble
east or west would have implications on where the greatest flooding,
wind and tornado threat materialize. Guidance also continues to
differ in regards to timing with the ECMWF remaining several hours
slower than the GFS solution. With this in mind, the forecast and
graphics will be subject to change with additional forecast packages
later today. Regardless, any remaining perpetrations should be rushed
to completion as conditions will deteriorate through the day today
and especially by this evening. /TW/

Wednesday through the weekend...

By Wednesday the upper trough will swing across the region and pick
up Ida as it does. This trough will carry Ida into the Tennessee and
Ohio Valleys by Wednesday morning, leaving our region with much
drier weather. This includes a much drier airmass for parts of the
area, as dewpoints will drop into the mid to upper 60s for much of
the region. Some lingering rain/storms will be possible especially
in the south but by the end of the week, upper ridging will build
back into the region and Ida will be pushing off the east coast. The
upper ridge will keep our convection at bay through the weekend
before being dampened as a front looks to drop south by late
weekend. With the hurricane to our east, fairly pleasant conditions
will be in store for the weekend with highs in the upper 80s and
some lower 90s. Dewpoints will be rather nice and in the 60s for the
area, and keeping heat indices at bay which will be really helpful
for anyone who loses power for an extended period of time rather
than having hot and muggy conditions. /28/

...Line of strong thunderstorms will impact portions of Covington,
Jones and northern Jefferson Davis Counties through 1130 AM CDT...

At 1049 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along
a line extending from near Ovett to near Sanford. Movement was
northwest at 40 mph.

HAZARD...Winds in excess of 40 mph.

SOURCE...Radar indicated.

IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around
         unsecured objects.

Locations impacted include...
Laurel, Ellisville, Collins, Mount Olive, Ovett, Clem, Sanford,
Tuckers Crossing, Lone Star, Moselle, Hebron, Soso and Seminary.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
