.AVIATION...
18Z TAF discussion:
VFR conditions exist across the region this afternoon, with
isolated TS/SHRA developing across parts of south/east MS and
central LA. This activity, which may cause brief categorical
reductions, will die off by early evening. Patchy fog is possible,
mainly across south/east MS late tonight into early Tue morning,
but it should dissipate shortly after sunrise. Otherwise, VFR
conditions are expected to prevail. /DL/
&&
.DISCUSSION...
It is a relatively quiet morning, with patchy high cirrus passing
across the region and lower cumulus developing in the heating of
the day. Stronger mid level ridging along the Gulf Coast will
contribute to warm conditions today. With increased low level
moisture, heat indices to rise above 105F at times, especially in
the northern/western portion of the area where rain chances are
lower. A Heat Advisory continues for that portion of the area.
Diurnal convective development is expected this afternoon, mainly
along the seabreeze. There is also broad upper troughing edging
into the Mississippi Valley. These two influences should focus
most development across southern/eastern portions of the CWA.
Activity spurred on by the seabreeze by begin a bit later in the
afternoon and hang on just a touch longer before dissipating in
the early evening. Based on modified 12z soundings, high DCAPE
may result in a microburst threat with any stronger cells that can
develop. All in all, the inherited forecast was in good shape,
and no major adjustments are planned at this time. /DL/
Prior discussion below:
Today and Tonight...High pressure aloft and at the surface will
continue to build into the region as we start off the new work week.
The resulting general west to southwest flow aloft across the Lower
Mississippi River Valley, in addition to increasingly southerly flow
at the surface, will result in a return to hot and muggy conditions
across the forecast area. With highs in the low and middle 90s
today, coupled with dew points in the 70s, heat index values will
range between 100-105F over much of the CWA. However, across
Northeast Louisiana, extreme Southeast Arkansas, and the Mississippi
Delta region, a slightly higher combination of heat and humidity
levels will yield heat index values between 106-110F. As a result
of these dangerous heat stress conditions, a "Heat Advisory" will be
hoisted for these areas from 10 AM until 7 PM today.
The increasing heat and humidity will also result in a slightly more
unstable airmass today. Therefore, there will exist slightly better
chances for isolated to scattered showers and storms across mainly
eastern and southern portions of the forecast area this afternoon.
The majority of this activity will dissipate during the late
afternoon and early evening hours. Muggy conditions will persist
overnight, with lows only falling into the middle 70s. /19/
Tuesday through the weekend...
Typical August weather is expected through the long term. As upper
ridging builds over the region and southerly flow pumps in moisture,
warm and muggy conditions will prevail. Dewpoints in the lower to
mid 70s will combine with temperatures reach into the lower to mid
90s to produce heat indices of around 100-105 degrees most locales.
Some portions of the forecast area generally along and west of the I-
55 corridor will see heat indices around 105-107 degrees. For now,
will keep with a limited risk for heat stress through much of the
week and address the need for a heat advisory and/or elevated hazard
risk in the graphics/HWO in future forecasts.
In addition, diurnal showers and storms will affect the region.
Convection should diminish through the evening hours leading to
muggy conditions overnight and lows in the lower to mid 70s. Getting
closer to the weekend, some of this convection should have better
coverage than the slight chance to chance POPs early this week.
Models do hint at the possibility for another front to drop into our
region by the end of the weekend. If this does, it might bring
another brief respite from the hot and muggy conditions. /28/
