.DISCUSSION...

Surface high pressure will gradually slide into the Southern
Plains tonight as an upper trough axis swings into the Lower
Mississippi Valley. With ascent pulling northeast of the area and
low-level dry advection we'll finally begin to see the pesky low
cloud deck shift east with partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies by
daybreak west of I-55. Winds will remain around 10mph out of the
northwest tonight and the only adjustment to the forecast was to
nudge overnight low temperatures up slightly with a blend of raw
guidance as winds will keep the boundary layer mixed beneath
cloudy skies. This change was not significant enough to impact any
headlines with a hard freeze warning and dangerous cold still on
tap, especially across the Delta. /TW/

Tonight and Friday: Local radars still showed a band of light
wintry precipitation across our delta region extending east along
Highway 82. The Winter Weather Advisory was extended until 6 PM to
account for very light additional icing that will occur. Hi-res
models maintain this band of precipitation will dissipate by
evening and dry weather is expected tonight through Friday.
Afternoon surface analysis had a >1030mb high centered over the
Southern Plains that is progged to shift east through Friday. This
will result in much colder than normal temperatures tonight where
morning lows will be in the teens generally along and northwest of
the Natchez Trace. Lows will be in the 20s southeast of the
Natchez Trace. This will result in refreezing of any water left on
the roadways making for hazardous travel conditions and the hard
to see black ice. In addition, the gradient winds will remain up
and result in wind chill temperatures below 10 degrees in portions
of our west and in the teens elsewhere. Hypothermia and frostbite
remain threats with prolonged exposure. The upper level trough
axis to our west this afternoon will shift east of Mississippi
Friday afternoon and the center of the surface high will spread
over the western portions of our CWA by afternoon. This will
allow the sun to break through along with a lighter north wind.
Although much cooler than normal temperatures will continue,
afternoon highs will reach into the mid 40s southeast and perhaps
top out near freezing for the first time in days across portions
of our delta region. /22/

Friday night through Wednesday: Expect dry conditions with record
low temperatures likely Friday night as high pressure settles in
across the area. Lows Friday night will range from the lower teens
north to the lower 20s southeast. Dry weather will continue
Saturday and Sunday as high pressure remains in control.
Temperatures will be warming, ranging from the upper 40s northwest
to the middle 60s southeast by Sunday. Rain chances return Sunday
night as a frontal system approaches the region. Some light
freezing rain will be possible across the northwest late Sunday
night before the precipitation ends. Dry weather will return
Monday as the frontal system moves off to the east, and high
pressure begins to settle in. Expect dry weather and warming
temperatures Tuesday and Wednesday as high pressure remains across
the area. Highs by Wednesday will range from around 60 northwest

 travel conditions are expected and sporadic power outages
