Hot and humid conditions will continue today as highs reach the mid
90s east to near 100 west. Heat index values will range from around
100 east to near 115 in the Delta. An Excessive Heat Warning remains
in effect for portions of the west and central, with a Heat Advisory
in effect for portions of the central and east. Isolated showers and
storms will be possible this afternoon and evening across much of
the area. No major changes were needed to the current forecast.

Today and tonight...
Ridging aloft and at the surface continues across the region. The
current warming trend increases today with hotter temperatures
and humid conditions. The ridge building in over the region will
temporarily diminish, though not entirely eliminate the pops over
much of the forecast area today. Isolated showers will be
possible this afternoon. 850mb temps climb into the 20C-21C
range. Surface temps soar well into the mid to upper 90s/near
100F. Already oppressive temps are compounded by increasing
moisture in the region. Guidance pushes dewpoints in the Delta to
near 80F. With heat indices values from 105 to over 110 in much of
the region, continuing the excessive heat warning/heat advisory
as is. Tonight, temps will only drop into the mid 70s as the heat
is held over the region through tomorrow. /HJS/
Tuesday through next weekend (Sunday)...
An increasingly hot & humid pattern with heat stress & gradual
increasing rain chances is expected through the period.
Tues: The region will remain on the E periphery of mid-level ridge
axis over the southern Plains & E-NE flow aloft. This will keep some
continued dry advection from the NE, which will keep rain & iso
storm chances somewhat suppressed to the S. With anomalous low-level
thermal warmth, highs could get in mid-upper 90s & heat indices
similar to Mon. "Significant"/dangerous heat stress is expected in
the Delta, SE AR, extreme NE LA & W-NW MS, generally along & W of I-
55 corridor. Due to that, extended the "Significant" & "Elevated"
from Mon into Tues & only small config changes were needed to the
"Elevated" in the E. Filled in the E with "Limited" as heat indices
could approach near 105 degrees. Stay cool, hydrated & take all of
your heat safety precautions. For now, held off extension of the
excessive heat warning/heat advisory, but this will likely be needed
in a future fcst package.
Mid-late week (Wed-Fri): By mid-late week, broad ridging will begin
to weaken & become more focused to the subtropical Atlantic. An
easterly wave/upper low is progged to drift W-NW across the Bahamas,
FL Peninsula/Panhandle & towards the N Gulf Coast/ArkLaMiss. This
will drive increasing moisture advection/deeper tropical moisture
in, especially into late week. Expect rain chances to gradually
become more scattered-numerous, especially in E-SE zones. More
numerous chances will be in the Hwy 84 to I-59 corridor in the Pine
Belt Wed & along & SE of a line from Natchez to Jackson to Meridian
Thurs. There may be some slight drying profiles into Fri that could
help coverage be slightly less, but overall pattern will be
persistent. Heat stress will be a concern at the start, with
"Elevated"/heat advisory potential along & W of I-55 Wed &
decreasing potential into Thurs in the W as highs moderate due to
increasing rain/storms & clouds. Made slight changes to mention Wed-
Thurs but most focus will be for Wed. Organized convection isn't
anticipated, outside of any stronger bowing segments to the W-NW.
Heavy downpours can't be ruled out, especially closer to Thurs, but
confidence isn't high enough to mention flash flooding potential
for any area this far out.
Next weekend (Sat-Sun): Persistent synoptic/sfc subtropical ridging
to the E will keep gradual increasing low-level S return flow into
the weekend. Heat & humidity will gradually begin another rise.
Model guid continue to prog potential tropical activity in the SW
Gulf/Bay of Campeche, so something to keep a close eye on. Rain &
storm chances will persist & remain mostly scattered-numerous, with
highest chances in S-SE, similar to Thurs. /DC/
