possible today. Little to no accumulation is expected. Otherwise,
skies will be mostly cloudy with high temperatures around 32
degrees. Mostly dry conditions are expected tonight before a more
impactful storm system moves into the region Monday into Tuesday.
Snow and ice accumulation is expected.

Pockets of flurries and light snow continue to track across
eastern and northern portions of the forecast area in association
with brief shot of stronger isentropic lift. Patchy freezing
drizzle has been reported upstream across northeast/central
Illinois this morning as mid level drying has occurred in wake of
this advective forcing. Better chances of drizzle are currently
working into northwest Indiana and should spread west to east
through early afternoon. With temperatures rising to around 30 by
midday and light nature to this drizzle, currently expecting
little to no impacts. Previous forecast appears to be on track and
no notable changes made to period 1 forecast.

.SHORT TERM...(Today and Tonight)
Issued at 432 AM EST Sun Jan 24 2021

Challenging forecast for today, with the primary question being
whether or not we get any precipitation, and if we do-what form will
it be in? High pressure and the dry air currently in place over the
forecast area may struggle to budge eastward in any quick fashion
through the period. Meanwhile, an occluding surface low entering NW
Ontario this morning will sink southeastward into Lake Superior by
this afternoon, and then reach southern Ontario/western Quebec by
early Monday morning. This will bring a weak cold front/surface
trough through our area. Ahead of the front we have some warm air
advection and low level moisture to work with, but as mentioned
previously there appears to be some mid level drying that works its
way in from the plains. This may serve to cut out moisture from the
DGZ and thus lead to more of a drizzle/freezing drizzle scenario
than snow. Short term/high res models appear to be catching onto
this theme, with a consolidated look to reflectivity to our west (as
was seen on observations as of this writing-in the form of snow) and
then a splitting to the precipitation once that forcing/better low
level moisture arrives here. One area of precipitation is with the
better forcing to the north of our CWA, and then another is to the
south where there is deeper moisture available.

Have maintained the low chance pops for today, focusing the higher
chances to the northern/southern borders. Little to no accumulation
is expected. At the very least it will be mostly cloudy, with highs
hovering around freezing, warmest south of US 30.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)

The main long term event of course is our potential winter storm
Monday into Tuesday, which is leaning even closer to the ECMWF
solution as of the latest model runs, and shifting the potential for
more of a mix further northward. Still not high enough confidence
for a watch, and per collaboration with neighbors opted to hold off
for now. Have lowered QPF and overall snow totals given the
dampening wave and concerns with loss of ice in the cloud as we've
been mentioning in previous discussions. Have inched the wintry
mix/all snow line slightly further north from the previous
forecast, with snow predominantly north of US Highway 6, and a
greater potential for mix the further south through the CWA you
go. Expect we'll start as snow/sleet in the south monday morning,
then see the transition to a mix with freezing rain/rain shift
northward through Monday afternoon and evening as temperatures
warm and we lose the deeper saturation in the dry slot. As we go
into Tuesday morning/afternoon we'll see a changeover back to snow
for all locations north of US 24. Overall, from Monday morning
into Tuesday evening (7 pm) I have 3 to 5 inches north of US
Highway 6, and 1 to 3 inches south (with totals decreasing further
south). Still have up to around 0.1 inch of ice south of US 24,
but confidence in how that will impact things given warmer
temperatures at the surface is low, especially with snow/rain
mixing in. The afternoon/evening commute Monday and possibly both
commutes Tuesday could will be hazardous due to snow/ice
accumulation and lowered visibility.

In regards to Wednesday into Thursday morning weather, it's really
low confidence. Models continue to disagree with one another on the
upper level pattern and subsequent surface features, in addition to
fluctuating back and forth from run to run on what might happen.
However, at the moment it looks like we'll see dry conditions
Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning beneath a weak ridge
before another upper level trough/closed low encompasses the Great
Lakes and Ohio Valley. While the exact timing of the low is
disjointed between models, it appears we'll see some form of
synoptic snow between late Wednesday morning and early Thursday
morning. The ECMWF has two bullseyes of precipitation, one across
our north/northwest CWA and one further south of us that just grazes
our CWA borders, whereas the GFS has the low closing off further
south over KY and largely impacting the southern/southeastern
portions of our CWA. Have maintained low chance pops for this period
as a result of the lower confidence, and it still looks to be in the
form of all snow.

One thing that the models do agree on at the moment is that behind
the trough/closed low 850mb temps drop to around -10C Wednesday
evening into Thursday, so we could see a little bit of lake effect.
Where exactly will depend on the wind direction, with the GFS
suggesting more of a northeasterly wind (thus keeping things over
the Chicago CWA) and the ECMWF suggests more of a north-
northwesterly fetch, which puts it over our northwest wind favored
regions near Lake MI. It doesn't appear to be substantial in regards
to accumulations at this time. Highs will be in the upper 20s and
low 30s both days, with lows in the teens and low 20s.

Thursday afternoon into Saturday morning will be dry as surface high
pressure builds in beneath a monster upper level ridge. Any
lingering lake effect from Wednesday night will diminish early
Thursday thanks to the incoming subsidence. Highs Friday will be
around 30F. Confidence is higher for this forecast period as models
have been persistent from run to run and with one another for the
past few days.

Finally, We'll see a broad area of low pressure over the
Central/Northern plains Saturday morning shift into the Great Lakes
for the weekend, reaching the lower Lakes late Sunday night. There
appear to be two upper level waves, one shifting through the
Canadian Prairie and MN/WI/Upper MI, and the southern stream lifting
from the central plains into Ohio. Where the two streams phase is
where we see differing solutions amongst models. Have maintained the
consensus pops for now given the significant differences, but it
should be warmer, with highs in the mid-upper 30s and low 40s.

...Patchy Light Snow and Freezing Drizzle...

Patchy light snow will continue to transition to some patchy light
drizzle and freezing drizzle through mid afternoon. A light glaze
of ice is possible on sidewalks, elevated surfaces, along with
secondary and untreated roads. Motorists and pedestrians should
exercise caution and be prepared for any slick spots. The drizzle
should come to an end from west to east late this afternoon.
