Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Indianapolis IN 1225 PM EST Sat Feb 13 2021 .UPDATE... No major changes to the forecast with conditions generally evolving as expected. Most of the light snow/flurries have stayed to the northwest of the forecast area but going into the late morning/early afternoon, additional development is still possible. Will keep an isolated/scattered mention for light snow/flurries across the far north and northwest to account for this. && .SHORT TERM (Today through Sunday)... Issued at 345 AM EST Sat Feb 13 2021 Early this morning some light snow was across northeastern Illinois and northwest Indiana (still northwest of the forecast area). Flurries did extend as far south as St. Louis. Some weak upper energy and the right entrance region of an upper jet will continue to bring forcing to mainly northern Indiana today. With the bulk of the forcing to the north, will just go with low PoPs across parts of the far north and northwest. However, with flurries being observed as far south as St. Louis already, will have a flurry mention as far south as I-70 or so today. The forcing will exit the area by this evening. There could be some lake effect snow showers just north of the area early this evening, so will have to keep an eye on them. For now will go dry tonight. Some weak forcing arrives ahead of the next system Sunday afternoon. The lower atmosphere will take some time to moisten up, so for the moment went dry. Much colder air is just west of the forecast area this morning, but the bulk of it looks to remain there today. Tonight, behind the exiting system, some of this colder air will flow into the area. There will still be a relatively tight gradient though, with below zero temperatures expected in the far northwest giving way to single digits above zero much of the rest of the area, to around 10 in the southeast. Winds will remain up tonight into Sunday morning, which will cause wind chills to be below zero for much of the area. Chills will likely dip to below advisory criteria in the far northwest, so will issue an advisory there for overnight through Sunday morning. Sunday will be colder than today, with a gradient of highs around 10 northwest to the lower 20s southeast. .LONG TERM (Sunday night through Friday)... Issued at 345 AM EST Sat Feb 13 2021 Storm... A deep upper level trough will create chances for accumulating snowfall Sunday night through Tuesday morning. This snowfall can be broken down into two separate events with the first lasting over approximately a 12 hour period Sunday night into Monday. The primary source of energy for this initial wave will be associated with a left over short wave originating from the Gulf. Aloft, flow will become predominately out of the SW pushing these remnants and left over vorticity NE, while also transporting its associated relatively warm, moist airmass (supported by positive PWAT anomalies) into the Ohio Valley. A well established PBL will decouple the warm moist air from the surface keeping surface temperatures well below normal. This will create an environment with near zero to at times positive lapse rates. By Sunday night, adiabatic flow is projected to induce lift over this stable layer promoting cloud growth and precipitation development. Lift will be further influenced by a jet streak over the lower Great Lakes. With temperatures this cold only minimal moisture is needed for ice crystal development and therefor cloud growth. QPF is not likely to be high with this initial round, as forcing is broad, but high snow ratios could still lead to the possibility of a wide range of 1 to 2 inch snow totals over most of central Indiana. The second event has the potential to be more impactful with snowfall expected to start prior to dusk on Monday and lasting for several hours overnight into Tuesday morning. The aforementioned deep trough is progged to spit out another wave into the the Ohio Valley, however this time the wave is much more robust with strong CVA out ahead pushing the maritime airmass further into the region. With stronger dynamics present, more rampant cyclogenesis is expected to occur with this event further aggravating mesoscale enforced lift. Synoptic scale lift will also be sufficient with strong CVA and jet streak induced diffluence. The most significant limiting factor will be the location of the primary upper level trough, with its axis centered too far west over the Great Plains. This will limit dynamic alignment needed for widespread intense snowfall rates. Brief heavy snow rates are still possible within mesoscale bands. Trends have been pushing the surface lower to the SE with each additional run, placing locations farther south in a more favorable snow accumulation environment. However, The ECMWF seems to be the outlier still placing the low just to the south of Indiana with high snowfall totals over central Indiana. At this point, the SE trend seems the most likely scenario given the shift the the orientation of a strong temperature gradient for this weekend, typically associated with future low track. Ensemble members within each model are still highly volatile with values ranging from 2 to 12 inches over all areas South and East of Indianapolis. There is greater confidence in NW portions of central Indiana having less of an impact with this second wave. As of right now it looks likely that areas in SE central Indiana will see at least an additional 4 inches on Monday/Monday Night with less values to the North and West. Right now, total snowfall accumulation expectations between the two events are around 3 inches in the far NW, between 4 and 6 inches along I-69 and 6+ inches in far SE central Indiana. With model ensembles widely varying, confidence is still not high enough for warning/advisory decisions, and if trends continue to move the system to the SE, snowfall expectations could lower by a 2+ inches. Tuesday through Friday... The system looks to be far enough east by during the day Tuesday to go dry, but cannot rule out some lingering flurries. A large upper trough moving into the Mississippi Valley by Thursday evening will generate a surface low east of it. This will potentially bring another bout of accumulating snowfall to the area, mainly Wednesday night and Thursday. Questions remain though on exactly where the surface low will track, with the GFS farther west and the ECMWF farther east. The track of course will have a big impact on how much snow falls across the area. Will continue to keep an eye on this system. There are some indications that warmer air aloft might sneak into southern parts of the area, which could bring precipitation type concerns. High pressure will then bring dry conditions for Friday. Cold temperatures will continue, but there will be a gradual moderation into Friday (but still well below average). && .AVIATION (Discussion for the 131800Z TAF Issuance)... Issued at 1225 PM EST Sat Feb 13 2021 IMPACTS: Mainly MVFR ceilings through the day. Could improve to VFR sometime after 6z. Winds from 020 to 320 around 7 to 12 kts. DISCUSSION: Mainly MVFR ceilings through the day, with some bouncing from VFR to MVFR at KLAF. Flurries are possible at KLAF and KIND and perhaps KHUF but should not impact flight category. Ceilings should improve to VFR later tonight as high pressure from the northwest helps to scatter the lower decks.
