Dry weather is expected tonight with clouds increasing towards the
morning hours. Clouds will continue to increase through the day
with chances for precipitation beginning late afternoon into the
evening. This may briefly be all rain before transitioning to
mostly snow in areas north and east of I-74. Some brief heavy snow
is possible. This snow will continue through the night before
becoming predominately rain Sunday. Snow amounts have the
possibility to range from 6+ inches in the northeast to near 0 in
the SW. There may be a fairly sharp snow cutoff somewhere around
I-74. A few light snow showers may linger into Sunday night and
Monday, but no impacts are expected. Dry weather then returns for
much of the week before another system arrives late in the work
week with rain being the primary precipitation type expected.

.NEAR TERM (Rest of Tonight)...

Satellite shows high clouds increasing quickly, so upped sky cover
as needed. These clouds may keep temperatures from getting quite
as cool as expected, so nudged up lows a bit.

Previous discussion follows....

Quiet and dry weather is expected for tonight as surface high
pressure continues to slowly move off to the east ahead of a
strong upper level trough. As this trough approaches, surface
pressure gradients will be on the increase which will lead to a
gradual increase of wind from 5-10 mph to closer to 10-15 mph by
the morning hours. Clouds also will begin to advect into the area
with mostly clear skies transitioning to mostly cloudy skies.
Confidence in the low temps is somewhat low and will be dependent
on when those clouds begin to arrive. Current thoughts are that
lows will fall into the low to mid 20s with the coldest temps in
the northeast where those clouds arrive latest.

.SHORT TERM /Saturday through Sunday Night/...
Issued at 309 PM EST Fri Jan 29 2021

The focus throughout this period will be solely on the winter storm
set to impact the region from Saturday afternoon through Sunday
night. Overall the broad features and general forecast has not
changed much from previous forecasts. There will be no changes to
our current headlines at this time...the Winter Storm Watch will
continue across the northern third of the forecast area from
Saturday evening through early Monday. Where we can add some
additional detail is in exploring the mesoscale impacts which is
likely to be a primary factor in tandem with the warm nose intrusion
to determining the eventual position of the transition zone and
total snowfall accums.

A strong upper wave has come onshore across the Intermountain West
this afternoon and will track east over the next few days. Phasing
of energy with the northern stream jet on Saturday will carve out an
upper low that strengthens and takes on a negative tilt across the
Missouri Valley by Saturday evening before shifting east across the
lower Great Lakes in a slowly weakening state through the remainder
of the weekend. A surface low will kick east out of the central
Rockies in tandem with the upper low on Saturday intensifying as it
tracks east into the Missouri Valley before occluding and moving
across the southern half of the forecast area Sunday.

Ahead of the approaching surface low...strong low level flow will
pull deep moisture out of the Gulf of Mexico and into the region by
Saturday afternoon. The location of a high pressure ridge to our
east will serve as a critical component for the first phase of the
storm late Saturday afternoon and especially Saturday night. A
residual cold...dry airmass will still be present even as the high
pressure departs. The surge of deep isentropic lift that arrives in
tandem with the initial moisture surge should have no trouble
overcoming the dry air and evaporative cooling processes will pull
temps back and make snow the likely predominant precip type at
onset. 850mb temp analysis spells this idea out nicely as the
approach of the initial surge of warmer air by Saturday evening is
tamped down almost immediately as the dynamical forcing and
evaporative cooling processes set up favorable boundary level
conditions for snow for much of the forecast area after a very brief
period of mixing for some locations at onset. There may end up being
a window in the late afternoon and early evening where snow rates
back off briefly as a quick shot of drier air moves through in wake
of the first axis of moisture. beyond this though is where the
heaviest snowfall threat lies moving later into the evening.

The isentropic lift will be further aided by a strong 50+kt low
level jet and an axis of mid level deformation by mid evening. In
addition...a split flow regime aloft will produce diffluent flow in
the mid and upper levels. All of these features supports the
potential for a potent front end snow thump that should bring a few
inches of accumulation right out of the gate into the early
overnight Sunday morning. Potential certainly appears to be there
courtesy of the strength of the lift and soundings that show a
favorable setup to tap into the dendritic growth zone where 1-2"
snow rates/hour would be on the table. As it stands at this
point...best threat for accumulation over much of the region likely
aligns in the 00-06Z timeframe.

The greater uncertainty in the storm forecast comes after 06Z Sunday
as the stronger surge of low level warm advection follows the
heavier snow Saturday evening. Precipitation will transition from
southwest to northeast to a rain/snow mix or even fully to rain
through the overnight hours with the transition zone likely setting
up near or just north of I-74 by the predawn hours. This may move a
touch further north Sunday morning before stalling across northern
counties then pulling back south late day Sunday and Sunday evening
as colder air comes back in behind the surface low. With the
weakening of the low after occlusion...precipitation rates will fall
steadily through the day Sunday. Any snow that accumulates in
addition to what falls Saturday evening and night should be
relatively light. Light snow showers and flurries will then linger
Sunday night as the storm moves away.

A couple of takeaway points with the weekend storm system:

1) Prepare for a high impact winter storm with travel difficulties
especially late Saturday through early Monday at times.

2) The eventual location of the transition line will dictate
snowfall accumulations and duration of varying precip types. Should
the transition zone be further south than currently thought...expect
higher snowfall totals in northern counties. If it is further
north...snowfall totals will be lowered by mixing.

3) Ice is not expected to be a concern...precip should largely be in
the form of snow and rain.

4) This will be a heavy wet "cement block" style snowfall. Wind
winds will be gusty at times...impacts caused by wind should be
minimal.

5) 3 to 7 inches of total snow is currently expected within the
Watch area...with highest amounts over northern counties from Kokomo
to Muncie.

6) Winter weather headlines will likely be updated on the midnight
shift tonight.

Temps...nudged high temperatures down from guidance both Saturday
and Sunday based on low level thermals. A model blend should work
fine for lows through the period.

.LONG TERM /Monday through Friday/...

A few lingering light snow showers and flurries are possible
through the day Monday as the upper level low pressure system
exits and strong northwesterly flow builds in its place. Lake
enhanced moisture will advect into much of central Indiana, but
the upper level forcing will be limited enough that most of the
area should remain dry, although cloudy. These clouds will hang
through the night before clearing by the early morning hours as
strong surface high pressure builds and dry air aloft moves in.
This high pressure will be in place for much of the middle of the
week before exiting late Wednesday.

The next system is currently expected to arrive Thursday. Latest
model guidance remains quite varied with a lot of uncertainty on
how quickly the low pressure system moves through California and
crosses the Rockies. With the uncertainty, will keep POPs limited
to the likely category as confidence in exactly when the system
arrives remains somewhat low. Do think that a significant rain
producing storm is likely with this system and will fine tune the
details in the coming days. Some areas of snow are possible, but
strong southerly advection ahead of the system should bring warm
enough air to the area to keep rain as the primary precipitation
type. Areas of an inch of rain look possible, but again will be
dependent on the final path and timing of the system. Temperatures
will generally be above to much above average although night
temps will occasionally be closer to normal.

DISCUSSION: Quiet weather will continue into early afternoon with
            gradually lowering of high then mid clouds. A mix of
            rain and snow will move in from the southwest mid
            afternoon then spread northeast. Precip will become
            mainly snow for KIND and KLAF by 00Z Sun, with IFR
            or possibly even lower conditions developing.
