.SYNOPSIS...
Issued at 244 AM EST Sun Jan 24 2021

An upper level weather disturbance approaching Central Indiana
will result in mixed precipitation this morning and early
afternoon...mainly across the southern half of Indiana.

Dry weather will return this evening as this upper level
disturbance exits the area. A warm front associated with
developing low pressure over the southern plains will then push
toward Indiana for Monday. This will bring another round of mixed
precipitation to Indiana for Monday.

More precipitation will be expected on Monday Night through
Tuesday as the low pressure system pushes across Indiana.

Dry weather will return by Tuesday night and early Wednesday as
the low departs...but more precipitation will be possible
Wednesday Night and Thursday as yet another low pressure system
passes to the south of Indiana.

Dry weather is expected to return to start the next weekend.

.NEAR TERM /Today/...

Added slight chance PoPs to northern counties to fix gap in PoPs
over north central IWX border counties.

Surface analysis early this morning shows High pressure in place
over Ohio. Light southeast surface flow was found over Indiana.
Dew points remained quite dry...in the teens. GOES16 shows a cloud
shield over the Mississippi Valley surging east across Indiana.
National Radar mosaics show scattered light precip over Western
Illinois...However much of this precip was failing to reach the
ground due to very dry dew points across the area.

GFS and NAM depict some upper forcing with a nearly zonal flow
aloft pushing across Indiana this morning before exiting tonight.
Better forcing can be seen within the 290K GFS Isentropic surface
where good lift appears in play from 12Z until 21Z passing across
mainly southern Central Indiana. Specific humidities remain near 5
g/kg. However the caveat in play here is the dry air within the
lower levels...along with the temperatures profiles that will
determine precipitation type. Forecast soundings show day air
holding in place across the area until about 15Z...at which point
saturation is finally seen within the lower levels. With the dry
air in place today...evaporational cooling is expected with the
lower levels as we trend toward saturation this morning. This will
result in a somewhat cooler column. Forecast soundings at IND
suggest a column entire below freezing this morning. Farther
south...say near BMG and Bedford...a slightly warmer column points
toward a freezing rain type soundings evolving toward all rain as
some warm air advection remains ongoing through the day.
Overall...best forcing remains across the southern parts of the
forecast area today mainly in the 15Z-21Z Time frame. Will trend
pops at or above the NBM given the favorable forcing for light
precip amounts. As for pops types will trend toward a FZRA start
south and a SN start along and near I-70...evolving toward a Rain
south and light FZRA near I-70 this afternoon. Given the very
light amount of precip expected along with warming temperatures
through the day...impacts of slick roads should be minimal...but
slick spots will still be possible. Plan to issue another SPS to
highlight the possible slick spots.

As for temps...given the expected clouds and precip will trend
highs at or below the NBM.

.SHORT TERM /Tonight through Tuesday Night/...

Issued at 244 AM EST Sun Jan 24 2021

Models suggest that the Upper forcing and Isentropic Lift is lost
this evening. Forecast soundings show some drying within the
column. Thus will trend toward a mostly cloudy sky tonight along
with dry weather as no forcing appears in place. With clouds skies
expected as lingering lower level moisture remains...will trend
lows at or above the NBM.

Models suggest on Monday that a upper trough over the plains will
eject upper forcing across Indiana and the Ohio Valley. This will
also be associated with a surface warm front...suggested to be
approaching from the southwest ahead of an associated surface low
near eastern KS. Ample moisture appears in place by Monday
morning with forecast soundings showing a saturated column.
forecast soundings show the southern 2/3rd of the forecast area to
be warm enough for precipitation to be all rain...however along
points north...LAF-OKK areas...a freezing rain signature is once
again revealed. Caveat here will be surface temps...where high in
the mid 30s are suggested for Monday at LAF. Even trending that
lower...surface temps still look to be above freezing in the
afternoon. Thus will trend Monday with a few hours of morning FRZA
north...trending toward RA in the afternoon. Thus the expected
rising temps by midday and thereafter should help to minimize any
ice accumulation. Overall ample moisture appears in place...thus
will once again trend pops at or above the NBM.

Rain chances will persist on Monday night into Tuesday as the
surface low is expected to push east along the warm front and
cross Central Indiana best moisture looks to be focused north of
the warm front...across northern parts of the forecast area.
However forecast soundings continue to show good lower and mid
level saturation through Tuesday as the Low passes. Thus will
continue high pops through Tuesday.

By Tuesday Night the surface low is expected to be well east of
Indiana as a trailing cold front sagas south across Indiana.
Forecast soundings at that point show ongoing cold air advection
with lingering lower level moisture. Again forcing will be
limited...but will keep some pops for light snow chances at that
point. Minimal to no accumulation expected at that point.

.LONG TERM /Wednesday through Sunday/...

The long term will start off dry Wednesday morning under the
influence of an upper ridge, just off to the east. However, there is
another chance of precipitation Wednesday afternoon and night as a
sharp upper low moves across the Ohio Valley Wednesday evening.
Deeper wraparound moisture, supplied by a strengthening surface
system departing the East Coast supports the higher PoPs over our
southeastern counties. Either way, blend PoPs currently are not
higher than chance. However, with how deep the moisture is and good
forcing, took the lead of ILX and raised PoPs to good chance
bordering them Wednesday afternoon and also raised PoPs Wednesday
evening bordering ILN and LMK.

Northeast winds ahead of an upstream surface ridge, low level
thermals, critical thicknesses and BUFKIT soundings support that
either it will start off as snow across all of central Indiana
Wednesday afternoon or start off briefly as a mix, including
freezing rain or drizzle potential, and then changeover snow late in
the day from northeast to southwest.

The aforementioned ridge of high pressure will move across late in
the week and provide subsidence and dry weather to central Indiana
for the late week and the first part of the early weekend. After
that, a southwestern system will bring Gulf moisture northeast
across central Indiana as it gets closer Saturday. This would
support increasing rain chances Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures will br trending up this weekend after the high
pressure ridge moves to the east Friday with afternoon highs mostly
seasonable in the 30s Wednesday, below normal in the 20s and 30s
Thursday but above normal in the 40s by Saturday.

.AVIATION /Discussion for the 24/18Z TAF Issuance/...

IMPACTS: MVFR and worse flying conditions expected for the bulk or
entire TAF period. Brief freezing rain or sleet possible after 15z
Monday at KIND and KLAF.

DISCUSSION: The wintry mix has moved off to the east. However, MVFR
and worse flying conditions expected most or all of the TAF period.
More mixed precipitation is possible at KIND and KLAF late Monday
morning as a low pressure system and associated warm front lift
north toward the Ohio River. Winds will start off from the south
less than 10 knots, become light to calm after 22z and then shift to
east and northeast 10 knots or more after 15z Monday. Gusts to 20
plus knots possible then.

This hazardous weather outlook is for central Indiana.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

Outlook: There is a chance for snow mixed with freezing rain today.
Best chances will be this morning across southern parts of Central
Indiana. Freezing rain is expected to change over to just rain by
late Sunday afternoon. A half an inch or less of snow accumulation
and 0.05 inches or less of ice accumulation is possible.

Another round of Freezing rain will be be possible after midnight
tonight across southwest Central Indiana. Any ice accumulation will
be minimal.

Timing: Today for the first round and after 6 am Monday for the
second round.

Impacts: Untreated surfaces may become slick.

Discussion: A mix of light snow and freezing rain will expand into
the lower Wabash Valley this morning.

A warm front will approach central Indiana overnight. This may bring
another round of precipitation.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Monday through Saturday.

Outlook: Another round of freezing rain will be possible on Monday
morning. There is potential for some minor ice and snow accumulations
through Monday. Temperatures rising on Monday afternoon should allow
freezing rain to change over to rain.

Another round of snow and rain/snow mix is expected from Wednesday
night through Thursday morning.

Discussion: Low pressure will track toward the Ohio Valley on Monday
bringing chances for a wintry mix of light freezing rain and snow to
central Indiana for Monday and Tuesday. There is a chance for light
ice and snow accumulations focused mainly north of Interstate 70 on
Monday. Another round of snow potentially mixing with rain at times
is expected Wednesday afternoon and night.

...Freezing Rain expected Monday...

Freezing rain, possibly mixed with sleet or snow will move in to
areas near and north of a Terre Haute to Greensburg line after 4
AM Monday morning and spread northeast during the day. The
precipitation is expected to effect the Metro area before and
during morning rush hour. By Monday afternoon, the precipitation
will turn to rain over areas near and south of Noblesville and
Crawfordsville. Ice accumulation will result slick untreated
surfaces Monday.

Use caution if traveling and allow plenty of extra time and
stopping distance Monday morning. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio
and local media for updates.
