An active period continues with below normal temperatures
sticking around for the time being. Flurries or light snow will be
possible this morning north of I-70 and then again south of I-70
this evening. Little to no snow accumulation is expected.
Additional snow chances will be possible later Saturday and again
on Sunday.

Issued at 1027 AM CST Fri Feb 5 2021

An area of low level clouds is translating east-southeast across
the area this morning, mainly east of a Jacksonville-to-
Bloomington line. Beneath these clouds, scattered flurries will
continue. Tweaked the sky grids to better capture the timing of
these clouds. Increased the wind gusts for this afternoon. Model
soundings are supportive of westerly gusts to 35 mph mixing down
this afternoon, and gusts this morning are already around 30 mph
at multiple sites across the area. Otherwise, much of today and
tonight's forecast remains on track.

Current forecast lows for Sun AM are on the warm end of the GEFS
members, but around the 50th percentile of the blended guidance.
Have not made changes yet but am considered nudging Sun AM lows
colder for the afternoon package. Regardless, bitter cold is on
the way.

An active stretch of weather continues this weekend into early next
week with multiple chances for light snow and bitterly cold
temperatures.

A large-scale upper trough remains positioned over the central CONUS
early this morning, with the shortwave that brought yesterday's
precipitation/very strong winds now located well east of local area.
Breezy northwest winds linger early this morning with gusts
generally between 20-30 mph as of 2 AM and windchills below zero
north of I-74. Although blowing snow seems to have subsided for the
most part, road conditions are still being reported as partially to
completely covered with snow across the north. Because of this and
per coordination with neighboring office's, will hold onto the
Winter Weather Advisory through 6 AM. A brief 'lull' in the
gustiness should occur around sunrise and shortly beyond as the
pressure gradient slacks a bit as a weak shortwave moves across the
region. Although weak, some high resolution models depict a period
of flurries or light snow through late morning/early afternoon north
of I-70. Forecast soundings agree with this and have a period of low-
level saturation within the DGZ during this time. Added the mention
of flurries across these areas to account for this. Winds will
become blustery once again this afternoon as steep low-level lapse
rates develop and mix down 25 to 30 kt 925 mb winds. Some patchy
blowing snow on mostly N to S roadways will be possible across
northern areas that received 1-2 inches of new snow yesterday,
which may result in the redevelopment of slippery spots on roads.

High temperatures will vary quite a bit today, with highs across the
north in the teens and 20s to 30s further south. Another weak
shortwave trough will roll through the area tonight, bringing yet
another shot at light snow or flurries to areas along/south of I-70.
Little to no accumulation is expected. Winds lighten up some going
into Friday night as high pressure moves in briefly, resulting in
chilly overnight lows. Temperatures will range from the single
digits to the teens from north to south respectively.

Saturday starts out quiet and dry, though another round of light
snow moves in by later in the day associated with an arctic front.
The front looks to move through pretty quickly, with model's in good
agreement that light snow of 1 to 2 inches will accumulate mainly
north of I-70, lesser amounts south of there. An arctic push of much
colder air arrives going into Saturday night as the southern fringes
of Canadian high pressure start to spread into the area. Medium
range models have come into better agreement with temperatures
during this time, with 850 mb temperatures around -10 to -15
degree C. This will translate to overnight lows in the single
digits below zero across the north and teens above zero further
south (15 to 25 degrees F below normal for this time of the year -
brrr!). These temperatures paired with 10-15 mph winds will make
things feel even colder. Windchills look to be near or below zero
areawide, with locations along/north of I-74 in the 15 to 20 below
zero range. Wind Chill headlines will be needed for this time
period.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Thursday)

High temperatures on Sunday will not rebound much from earlier lows,
with diurnals of only around 10 degrees. Another chance for light
snow is expected later on Sunday as a baroclinic zone sets up
between Canadian high pressure and a developing low in the lee of
the Rockies. Still some differences in placement of snow, though
accumulations look to be on the lighter side. Sunday night will be
another cold night, though not quite as cold as Saturday night
likely due to more cloud cover. Albeit, winds will keep things
feeling much colder with another shot at criteria-level windchills
across the north. Headlines may be needed once again for this
period.

Models diverge some going into next week, though occasional chances
for snow will persist through at least the middle of next week. The
aforementioned low will be one to watch from Monday into Tuesday,
likely bringing another shot of possibly higher snow amounts to the
area. Prolonged below normal temperatures stick around through at
least the middle to end of next week and beyond as the arctic
airmass remains positioned over much of the eastern two thirds of
the CONUS. The latest guidance suggests perhaps the coldest
timeframe over the next 7 days being the end of next week/weekend as
850 mb temperatures near 20 degrees C below zero or colder.

VFR conditions should be present at all sites through the
afternoon, overnight, and into tomorrow. However, DEC and CMI are
seeing a little more CU around 2kft this afternoon and based on
vis satellite loops, think DEC and CMI could see periods of broken
cigs around 2kft for next 2-3 hrs this afternoon. So, have added
TEMPO groups for both in new TAFs. Other sites should see
scattered clouds. All sites will begin to see more mid clouds
around 15kft advecting into the area tomorrow morning ahead of the
next weather system. PIA, SPI, and DEC will see broken clouds
while BMI and CMI will see scattered clouds. West winds will
remain very breezy at all sites this afternoon, and then diminish
this evening, with BMI, CMI, and DEC remaining a little breezy
into the evening hours. By tomorrow, winds will become northwest
to north at all sites with speeds at 10kts of less.
