A chance of light snow will arrive tonight into Saturday over
central and northern Illinois, with 1 to 3 inches of snow possible
along and north of a Canton to Bloomington line. Bitter cold
temperatures will continue through the middle of next week over
Illinois, with the coldest temperatures expected Saturday night
through Monday. Wind chills will fall as low as 10 to 30 below
zero across central and southeast Illinois during this time
period.

Main update this morning was to trim cloud cover mainly from I-72
to I-70 region with a fairly pronounced clearing over this area.
Nevertheless, plenty of clouds upstream into the central Plains
will stream back into the area later today while a disturbance
ejects out of the Rockies through the central Plains heading
toward northern and central IL tonight.

.SHORT TERM...(Today through Saturday)
ISSUED AT 400 AM CST Fri Feb 12 2021

Early morning surface map shows strong 1041 mb arctic high
pressure over central SD into southeast ND with northerly winds
continuing to bring frigid air into central IL. Temps at 330 am
ranged from 4F at Galesburg to around 20F in southeast IL from
Paris to Effingham southeast. Wind chills were as cold as 11-13
below zero at Bloomington, Galesburg, Macomb and Quincy. A wind
chill advisory is in effect just west of our CWA through noon
today where wind chills could reach around 15 below or colder at
times.

A weak disturbance moving into the western Great Lakes early this
morning was bringing some very light snow or flurries into parts
of central IL, mainly north of I-72. A few flurries also possible
south of I-72 into mid morning otherwise a fair amount of clouds
will likely linger over CWA today. Clouds and NNW winds 10-15 mph
and gusts to around 20 mph will not allow much temp rise today.
Highs today range from 5-10F nw of the IL river, to 20-26F in
southeast IL, with mid 20s far se by Lawrenceville. Wind chills
will range from 5-15 below zero from I-72 north this morning and
with Galesburg the coldest where wind chills could briefly reach
15 below or a bit colder.

A disturbance will quickly track eastward from the central Rockies
and Plains into central and northern IL during tonight and
Saturday. This will likely spread a band of light snow to areas
from I-72 north with lower chances of light snow further south to
I-70. Between 1-3 inches of snow is possible from Canton to
Bloomington north, with the highest amounts over Knox, Stark and
Marshall counties. The light snow will diminish to a few light
snow showers or flurries during Sat afternoon over ne CWA. Gets
colder tonight with lows mostly in the single digits over central
IL, around zero over the IL river valley, where wind chills could
reach 15-20 below zero overnight into Sat morning especially nw
of the IL river where a wind chill advisory may be needed then.
Lows tonight of 10-14F in southeast IL from I-70 southeast.

Highs Saturday 5-10 from I-55 west and upper teens and lower 20
in southeast IL. NNW winds 10-15 mph and gusts to around 20 mph to
keep wind chills below zero over much of central IL during the day
Saturday.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday night through Thursday)

Another strong arctic high pressure of 1045-1050 mb drops into the
Midwest on Sunday. This will bring dry but bitter cold
temperatures to the area Sat night and Sunday. Lows Sat night in
the single digits below zero and single digits above zero in
southeast IL. Winds chills of 15-25 below zero expected over much
of central IL overnight Sat night into Sunday morning and 5-15
below zero in southeast IL. A wind chill advisory will likely be
needed over much of central IL then. Highs Sunday zero to 5 above
from I-55 west and low to mid teens in southeast IL.

A strong storm system off the Pacific Coast to dig into the
southern Rockies late Saturday night and Sunday morning, and have
a surface low form over the western Gulf of Mexico Sunday night
and Monday morning and lift toward the mid Atlantic States by Tue.
Some weak isentropic lift with some light snow initially spreads
over CWA during Sunday night, especially after midnight Sunday
night. But the main lift/moisture will arrive during Monday
afternoon and Monday night in the form of snow, and could see
moderate accumulations especially over se CWA. Bitter cold
temperatures continue Monday and will give higher snow ratios.
Highs Monday in the single digits over central IL and 10-15 in
southeast IL. Winds chills will likely be 15 to 25 below zero
again over much of central IL Sunday night through Mon morning and
5-15 below zero in southeast IL.

Strong winter wx system pulls away from IL on Tue with dry and
cold conditions prevailing as 1025-1030 mb high pressure settles
into the Midwest Tue and Tue night. Could be a few light snow
showers or flurries in east central IL near the IN border. Highs
Tue 10-15F in central IL and upper teens in southeast IL. Subzero
wind chills likely yet from 5-15 below zero. Yet another southern
stream winter wx system to move into the Southern Plains late Wed
and Wed night, and could bring more snow into central and
especially southeast IL from late Wed into Thu. Highs Wed/Thu in
the low to mid 20s.

VFR conditions this afternoon will deteriorate this evening as a
disturbance moves into the northern half of IL, bringing light
snow along and north of the I-72 corridor. MVFR cigs and vsbys in
light snow begin around 03Z at KPIA and KBMI, then around 05-07Z
at KSPI-KDEC-KCMI. Expect most intense snow and IFR periods of
