Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Lincoln IL 234 PM CST Sun Jan 3 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Issued at 232 PM CST Sun Jan 3 2021 Abundant low-level moisture remains in place across the area. Dense fog is expected to develop again this evening and persist through much of the morning Monday. High pressure will build into Central and southeast Illinois through much of the week. Conditions should remain mostly dry with temperatures near to slightly above normal. && .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Monday) ISSUED AT 209 PM CST Sun Jan 3 2021 Surface ridge will drift across the state overnight setting us for another night of low ceilings and potentially dense fog. With overnight temperatures mostly in the 20s, some ice depositian on untreated surfaces, particularly bridges and overpasses will be likely adding to the hazardous conditions. Despite short-wave ridging into Illinois on Monday and the surface ridge sliding east, temperatures above the strong boundary layer inversion are expected to climb 7-10C at 850mb between 03/12z and 04/12c futher reinforcing the inversion. Clouds will likely linger again Monday with any breaks short-lived. Have reduced temps several degrees in areas that received 4"+ snowfall amounts last night as any solar heating will go into melting the snow and keep temps from climbing much above freezing. && .LONG TERM...(Monday night through Sunday) ISSUED AT 232 PM CST Sun Jan 3 2021 A northern stream system should skirt central Illinois on Monday Night. Models differ with on whether forcing with the wave is sufficient to squeeze out any precip from the boundary layer. NAM is the most aggressive, while deterministic ECMWF and GFS keep chance PoPs to our north. NBM keeps area dry with only the WRF with QPF. Won't include chance PoPs, but wouldn't be too suprised to see a few flurries north of I-74. Energy approaching the Midwest toward midweek de-phases as it splits around Illinois. Southern stream wave digs into the lower Mississippi Valley while northern stream races east into Ontario. Forecast area should be on the northern fringe Wednesday and Wednesday Night of the southern cutoff and some chance PoPs will be introduced across west central Illinois. The bulk of the area should remain dry. Illinois remains mostly between jets through the rest of the week with mostly dry conditions and temperatures near to slightly above normal into the weekend. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1133 AM CST Sun Jan 3 2021 LIFR ceilings are expected to persist through the period, as excessive moisture continues to flood central Illinois. A small break in cloud coverage is occurring midday across southern Illinois, with SPI going BKN this afternoon...however still in IFR category. As evening arrives, expecting ceilings to fill again to OVC, along with the return of FG in the overnight. Below freezing temps will create FZFG around the region tonight, with the possibility of another Dense Fog Advisory needed tonight as visby's drop below 1/2SM.
