AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...
A quick-moving system will bring accumulating snow to parts of
the area this evening through tonight before drier conditions
return for Tuesday. Another system will bring renewed chances
for widespread wintry precipitation Wednesday through Thursday
night, with drier and colder air filtering in late week into the
upcoming weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /UNTIL 6 PM THIS EVENING/...
Subtle mid level energy propagating through a quasi-zonal
mid level flow regime anchored over the Ohio Valley will
continue to bring a low chance of snow or flurries through the
morning hours for portions of west-central Ohio.

Will see mostly cloudy skies for most of the region today,
except for the southeast CWFA where some sunshine will occur
this morning. With the persistent clouds in the north and the
brief peeks of sunshine south of the Ohio River this afternoon,
highs will vary rather considerably across the local area,
ranging from the lower 20s in west-central Ohio to lower 40s in
the lower Scioto Valley.

Attention turns to the west by mid afternoon as another
round of wintry pcpn will be developing, which will overspread
the area quickly during the late afternoon/early evening time
period. The details of this portion of the fcst are discussed at
length below.

.SHORT TERM /6 PM THIS EVENING THROUGH 6 PM TUESDAY/...
The latest guidance has trended perhaps a bit more robust with
the system forecast to impact the ILN FA this evening into
tonight. From a broad-scale perspective, midlevel energy
ejecting east through the mostly-zonal base of the larger-scale
trough will track through the Ohio Valley this evening into
tonight. This will prompt the development of a broad but vertically-
cohesive open wave that will progress along the quasi east-west
oriented LL baroclinic zone draped across the region. As the
wave moves along the broad frontal boundary, a subtle
strengthening of the LLJ north into the Ohio Valley will yield
increased LL convergence within the H7-H8 layer. Flow-parallel
frontogenesis within this layer will develop and strengthen
before moving into the ILN FA past 00z, owing to increased
confluence along a flow- parallel axis oriented WSW to ENE
across the heart of the local area. This signal, while present
but more muted for many days on the global suite of models, has
only recently become a bit stronger, with amply cold air through
the column to support mainly snow throughout the ILN FA with
this system through tonight.

More specifically, there is at least some degree of model
consensus in an axis setting up near and parallel to the I-71
corridor for best LL convergence and subsequent lift to allow
for a persistent and cohesive band of snow to overspread the
Tri-State area and areas near the I-71 corridor from this
evening through early tonight. While the orientation of the best
forcing and lift owing to the aforementioned reasons is set,
the main question at this time remains the exact placement (on a
N-S axis) of this convergent axis. The global suite of models,
namely the ECMWF and CMC, would suggest the best potential for
sustained robust snowfall rates this evening to be along and
perhaps just north of the I-71 corridor (perhaps in a line from
Ripley/Franklin Cos IN to Fairfield Co OH). The hi-res CAMs, on
the other hand, show a solution decidedly further south, more
on a Carroll Co KY to Hocking Co OH line. There is good
agreement and support in the data to suggest many spots within
these corridors will see 2-3" of total snow this evening into
tonight, with the best snowfall rates (HREF ens. mean showing
potential for 1/4" to 1/2" per hour rates) occurring primarily
between 01z- 07z. On either side of this corridor (i.e. closer
to I-70 or from Owen Co KY to Scioto Co OH), confidence is much
lower in exactly how much snow will fall in these areas owing to
uncertainty in where exactly the best banding of snow will set
up/propagate. At this point, do feel that an inch is more likely
from Owen Co KY to Scioto Co OH than the 2-3" forecast a bit
further north. However, given the consensus in the CAM data,
felt it was prudent to create a wider goalpost on the southern
edge of the advisory given the lower criteria (2") than on the
northern side of the advisory (3").

The uptick in model-depicted snowfall rates and overall
snowfall potential, owing to better LL
convergence/frontogenesis, locally in recent model runs is
something to note. If anything, feel this event may over-perform
given the antecedent cold ground temperatures and the slightly
higher than climo SLRs, which model guidance suggests will be
about 12:1-13:1. It will not be much of a stretch for spots
within the advisory area to receive more on the order of 3-4"
especially if the 1/2" per hour rates are realized, which could
yield near-warning criteria snowfall. At this time, did not
have confidence to go straight with a warning and feel there is
enough time and more data to see to determine if this is the
best route and whether warning level will be widespread enough
(or more isolated) to warrant an upgrade. At the very least, it
will be a snowy evening/night for many, with the snow tapering
off WNW to ESE in the predawn hours Tuesday.

Should at the very least mention that the forecast for snow is a
bit lower in the north (i.e. north of I-70), due to an intrusion
of drier midlevel air east into west-central Ohio late this
evening, which will decrease the moisture availability within
the DGZ and inhibit dendrite growth potential. With the
shallower moisture profile in west-central Ohio, do not see
nearly as much snow falling in these areas (generally an inch or
less), despite the even colder profile for these locations. This
midlevel dry air will impinge into more of the local area in the
predawn hours, suggesting that even for areas in the advisory,
the snow may end as a brief period of freezing drizzle as
saturation is lost in the DGZ toward 12z.

Think that Tuesday highs are a bit overdone with the prospect of
having several inches of a fresh snowpack on the ground.
Nevertheless, highs will range from the lower 20s in west-
central Ohio to mid/upper 30s in NE KY. Would not be surprised
to see guidance continue to trend downward with Tuesday highs
should a 2 to 3 inch fresh snowpack materialize for parts of the
area.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...
Classic overrunning pattern is still forecast for the middle of the
week with Arctic high pressure building east across the Great Lakes
and a front extending from the Tennessee Valley into the central
Appalachians. But even with that pattern, there is an uncomfortable
amount of uncertainty with how wintry precipitation will evolve. 00Z
ECMWF and NAM are in broad agreement while the 00Z GFS and Canadian
are similar to each other but different than the ECMWF/NAM.

So there is the potential for some light precipitation to move
across the southern counties Tuesday night associated with an
initial ripple along the front. If this occurs, there may not be ice
in the cloud at onset which would lead to some light freezing rain
before mixing/changing to some light snow. Precipitation will
increase in coverage and amount on Wednesday, although whether that
happens early in the day or during the afternoon is unclear.
Precipitation will continue into Wednesday night, although it will
gradually be diminishing from the northwest. Precipitation will
continue well into Thursday across southern counties before
decreasing.

As far as precipitation type, that will depend on temperatures aloft
as the surface temperature will be below freezing. Given the amount
of uncertainty, it seemed prudent to use the NBM as a starting
point. But bumped those temperatures a little warmer as usually warm
air aloft gets further north than forecast by the models. The caveat
is that the models have the correct track as minor variations will
impact this facet. The 00Z ECMWF and ECMWF ensemble have trended
towards a slightly more suppressed solution for the front and waves
along it, which would argue for cooler temperatures aloft. Will have
to see if that trend continues. Given that trend, temperature aloft
adjustments were rather minor but still towards correcting for the
typical bias in that field.

As a result, forecast has freezing rain, possibly mixed with snow at
times, across northern Kentucky into south central Ohio for a good
part of Wednesday into Wednesday night before transition to all snow
late Wednesday night into Thursday. This is also where the greatest
QPF is. So there is the potential for warning level impact across
that part of the forecast area. However, it is just a bit early for
a watch. Further north, forecast is for all snow with lesser QPF. A
lot of the details could change, most notably precipitation type and
accumulation, but it is a system to pay close attention to.

Some of the 00Z guidance is forecasting a short wave with sufficient
amplitude to generate snow to pass across the area Thursday night.
There is greater divergence in guidance further out in time. But at
this point have leaned towards expecting another mid level system to
pass across the area Saturday which would bring another chance of
snow. Below normal temperatures will persist through the period.

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Mid and upper level energy (upper level jet) will induce low
level convergence/forcing late this afternoon into tonight
across the forecast area. This will result in a band of snow
across the terminals. This band will be tricky on where it
exactly sets up and propagates between 00Z Tuesday and 12Z
Tuesday. Certainly some moderate to perhaps briefly heavy snow
will be possible. Have brought down visibilities to between
1/2SM and 3/4SM along with ceilings lowering in the 400 to 800
foot range. As the mid level energy exits to the east/northeast
toward morning, snow will taper off but MVFR visibilities and
IFR ceilings will remain. There is a low chance that a few
flurries or patchy freezing drizzle may occur before all
precipitation ends, but will take a look at that in more detail
in the next TAF package.

On Tuesday, Arctic high pressure will build east into the Great
Lakes. Unfortunately, considerable low level cloudiness (IFR to
MVFR ceilings) will remain. Visibilities should improve to VFR
as northerly winds prevail.

OUTLOOK...MVFR/IFR cigs/vsbys likely Wednesday and Thursday.
