* At 9:20 AM EST Tuesday the stage was 16.9 feet.
* Flood stage is 13.0 feet.
* Moderate flooding is occurring and moderate flooding is forecast.
* Forecast...The river is expected to rise to a crest of 16.9 feet
this afternoon.
* Impact...At 17.0 feet, Flooding worsens west of Interstate 95 and
water may begin surrounding homes in the Pines and Coxs Pond
areas. Homes off River Road may become isolated by flood waters.
Water may also affect yards off Planetarium Road and fields off
deep Branch Road. East of Lumberton, the lowest homes in the Pines
area may be flooded and homes may be surrounded by water in the
Pines area and between the Pepsi plant and the river. Chickenfoot
Road, Noir Street and Hestertown Road may be impassable.

* Impact...At 30.0 feet, Flood waters may isolate residences off
Larrimore Lane and Riverview Drive as Larrimore Lane becomes
impassable. Dozens of buildings nearer the river may become
isolated within several miles of Elizabethtown. Flooding may also
affect Beagle Run Lane. Flooding of farm fields near the river
worsens as does lowland flooding.

* Forecast...The river is expected to fall to 14.5 feet Saturday
morning.
* Impact...At 16.0 feet, Flooding worsens in the Pines and Coxs Pond
areas as well as along River Road. Flooding also worsens between
the Pepsi plant and the river on the east side of town. In
addition, Chickenfoot Road, Hestertown Road and Noir Street will
have flood waters on them.

Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington NC 921 AM EST Tue Jan 5 2021 .SYNOPSIS... An upper level disturbance will bring clouds and cool weather to the area today. Dry weather will develop tonight through Thursday as high pressure builds in from the west. A low pressure system is expected to bring cold rain Thursday night through Friday. && .UPDATE... Modest isentropic lift along the 295K theta surface is supporting an area of light rain moving eastward across the area now. PoPs have been increased slightly as some ASOS and mesonet stations are showing small measurable rainfall amounts have occurred across the Pee Dee region. This area of lift should move quickly east and off the coast by 3-4 PM. Model lapse rates in the mid levels are steep enough for some convective precip character to develop, but I have not included any mention of thunder at this time. Forecast highs have been tweaked down a couple of degrees, especially in the Whiteville to Wilmington corridor. && .NEAR TERM /THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Disturbance aloft will move overhead today across the region bringing increasing cloud cover and chances for light rain through this evening. Once the disturbance moves to the east, high pressure will build into the area for Wednesday with a return of dry conditions and clearing skies. Continued WNW wind flow will continue to keep near to slightly below average temperatures in place over the next 36 hours. && .SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... Ridge up through the Southeast Wed night will get nudged eastward as cutoff low swings toward the Carolinas on Thurs with center passing just off the South Carolina coast by Fri morning. Northerly winds Wed night will veer around and increase becoming onshore through Thurs with increasing lift and chc of rain by Thurs evening. May see a decent amount of rainfall Thurs night with periods of moderate to possibly heavier rain, mainly along or just of the coast. Expect clouds to thicken into and through Thurs with cool air in place. Temps overnight Wed will drop down around freezing with fewer clouds around and inland with readings a few degrees warmer closer to the coast. Clouds will keep aftn highs on the low side, closer to 50 and overnight lows Thurs night mid 30s to lower 40s. && .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... Low pressure just off the Cape Fear coast Fri morning will continue to lift off to the northeast as mid to upper trough follows behind it through Fri aftn. The more substantial rainfall should be over, but will have a round of cold rain as shortwave moves through Fri aftn in deep N-NW flow on back end of sfc low. As mentioned previously, cold air will be chasing moisture with a slight chc of mixed pcp in the forecast north of forecast area in any lingering pcp into early Sat morning. Temps will remain cold on Fri, in the 40s to near 50, in ongoing pcp. High pressure will build in behind exiting system through Saturday. After a dry and cool weekend, another area of low pressure will spread clouds and rain into the Carolinas by Monday. Highs may have trouble reaching 50 on Sat and should just eclipse 50 on Sun. Morning lows will be near or just below freezing through the weekend. && .AVIATION /12Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... Mostly VFR conditions through midday before MVFR ceilings come in as moisture with a passing disturbance will result in a mid- level cloud deck, occasionally dropping to around 3500 ft. Rain showers also possible in the vicinity of area terminals ending by Tuesday evening with skies clearing as the trough and mid- level moisture exit to the northeast. Extended Outlook...Mainly VFR through Thursday. Low pressure system will affect the region Thursday night into Friday evening with MVFR/IFR conditions. VFR to resume Saturday under high pressure. && .MARINE... Through Wednesday: Significant seas between 1 and 2 feet increasing to between 2 and 4 feet Wednesday from several directions between 4 and 6 seconds. Mainly offshore winds at 10 kts increasing to between 10 and 20 kts tonight before diminishing to 10 kts Wednesday. Showers expected to develop today with a very remote chance for a lightning strike or two. Wednesday night through Saturday... Benign marine conditions will continue Wed night into Thursday as ridging across the area keeps winds and seas low. North winds around 10 kts will increasing as they veer around to the east late Thurs into Fri. Seas less than 3 ft into Thurs will begin to increase Thurs night into Fri with stronger offshore flow developing as low pressure lifts off to the northeast through Fri night. The strong W-NW flow into Fri night will keep highest seas offshore. Seas should increase into SCA thresholds late Fri into Fri night. High pressure will build in behind exiting low through the weekend with winds and seas subsiding. Light northerly flow will allow seas to drop below 3 ft late Sat into Sun. && .HYDROLOGY... Minor to moderate river flooding continues across the area due to recent rainfall, with flood warnings in effect for eight river forecast points. Lumber River at Lumberton remains the only river point in moderate flood stage. Some rivers, such as those within the Cape Fear River basin and Black Creek near Quinby, are expected to crest within the next 24 hours before steadily falling. Water levels for other rivers, such as the Lumber River basin and Little Pee Dee near Galivants Ferry, are forecasted to remain steady or slowly fall over the next week. Subsequent rainfall expected Thursday night and Friday may slow down the falling of river levels.
