.SYNOPSIS...
Weak and dry high pressure will build in from the Gulf Coast
States today into Fri resulting in slightly above normal
temperatures. A strong cold front with scattered showers will
cross the area late Fri afternoon and night followed by dry high
pressure accompanied with at or just below seasonable temps
for the upcoming weekend. A mainly dry cold frontal passage
will occur Mon followed by high pressure with seasonable
conditions into the mid-week period of next week.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Only isolated showers remain across the ILM CWA as the main
thrust of the pcpn shunts off to the NE thru E during these
pre-dawn Thu hrs. Residual low cloudiness may take up to several
hrs after daybreak to finally breakout, especially across the
ILM NC Counties, once the mid-level s/w trof exits off the NC
Coast around daybreak. Subsidence in the wake of the departing
s/w trof will also aid the mixing from aloft, helping to scour
out the low clouds. Temps today will be seasonable, with mid to
upper 50s with a few 60 degree readings possible. Mainly clear
skies tonight as weak sfc high pressure briefly ridges in from
the Eastern Gulf of Mexico. Continued progressive flow aloft and
at the sfc will result in the approach of a modest/strong sfc
cold front from the west. This being driven by an upper s/w
trof that dives out of central Canada today and closes and/or
temporarily cuts off just east of the Mid-Mississippi Valley by
late Fri. This round of model runs has the approach of this
cold front to the ILM CWA much faster, ie up to 3 to 5 hrs,
than previous runs. Will adhere closer to this solution and as a
result have introduced chance POPs to the westernmost ILM CWA
by late Fri morning, followed by a progression eastward. POPs
will depend on the amount of Gulf and more-so Atlantic moisture
is tapped. Temps tonight slightly hier than the norm. WAA Fri
should boost highs above 60 especially east of the I-95
corridor. The immediate coast will see highs capped in the mid
50s due to SSW-SW winds across adjacent SSTs in the low 50s.

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
Models have sped up their depiction of Friday night's cold
front, now anticipated to move eastward across the area Friday
evening. A limited inflow of Gulf moisture plus modest
isentropic lift through the 600-850 mb layer should still
generate a period of showers just ahead of the front. My
highest PoPs (70 percent) are forecast along the Cape Fear
coast with lesser chances (40-50 percent) inland.
Rain should end from west to east by midnight with drier,
cooler air building in on westerly winds. A powerful upper
trough should push overhead Saturday, kicking gusts up to
25-30 mph with deep mixing in cold advection. 850 mb temps
should bottom out around -6C during the day. Even with
dewpoints only in the 20s, steep lapse rates should still help
develop a stratocumulus deck during the day as highs struggle
into the upper 40s to around 50.
Skies should clear out Saturday night with below-freezing lows
expected almost down to the beaches.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Dry weather is expected to prevail for the first half of the
coming week as dry offshore winds continue. Another strong
upper trough will move overhead on Monday, but without any link
to Atlantic or Gulf moisture there should be an increase in
clouds but with no accompanying rain potential. Surface high
pressure will build over the Southeast on Tuesday, beginning a
slight warming trend that should push high temperatures back
into the upper 50s by Wednesday.

.AVIATION /12Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
Low cloud deck introduces IFR and MVFR ceilings for the
terminals to start the 12Z TAF period. Shortwave trough
continues to move offshore, which will alleviate the cloud deck
by the mid-morning hours. A scattered VFR deck will result,
before drier air infiltrates more to yield SKC by the afternoon.
WSW winds at 5-10kts become light and variable by sunset. Some
model guidance references fog before sunrise Friday, but
ultimately believe that it'll be too dry and breezy in the
boundary layer.
Extended Outlook...Mainly VFR conditions expected through the
period. The main exception includes brief MVFR/IFR possible
associated with a cold front Friday afternoon and night and
again with another cold front during Monday.

.MARINE...
Through Thursday Night:
The departing upper disturbance will briefly tighten the sfc pg
in it's wake resulting in WNW-W winds around 15 kt with few
gusts up to 20 kt...backing to the WSW-SW during this aftn. The
area waters briefly come under the influence of sfc high
pressure ridging from the Gulf of Mexico tonight. SW winds will
drop to 10-15 kt. The sfc pg will tighten ahead of an
approaching cold front during Fri with SSW-SW winds increasing
to 10-20 kt with few gusts to 25 kt possible in the aftn.
Although with WAA ahead of the cold front, not entirely bought
on those WAA wind gusts occurring over the cool shelf waters
with local SSTs in the lower 50s. Seas generally in the 2 to 3
ft range thru tonight and 2 to 4 ft Fri except up to 5 ft south
of Cape Fear during Fri aftn. An 11+ second period, small ESE-SE
swell will mix in with the 3 to 4 second period wind waves.
Friday Night through Monday:
Models have sped up with their depiction of Friday night's cold
front, now indicating the boundary will slide off the coast
before midnight. Southwest winds will shift westerly behind the
front, but initially there should not be an appreciable increase
in wind speed. Speeds, however, should increase toward 25 kt
during the day on Sat as a powerful but moisture-starved upper
level disturbance moves across the area. Offshore winds will
continue Sunday, briefly increasing again Sunday night as a
secondary cold front moves offshore.
Small Craft Advisory conditions are forecast to develop Friday
night and last into Saturday night. Winds could approach
advisory criteria again Sunday night.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for the banks of the
lower Cape Fear River from Wilmington southward for the high
tide cycle during late this morning. Similar minor coastal
flood conditions are expected to continue with the high tide
cycles late Fri morning and possibly again midday Sat. These
minor flood events are the result of the high astronomical tides
resulting from the New Moon Cycle which peaked earlier this
week.
