* WHAT...For the High Surf Advisory, large breaking waves of 6 to
9 feet expected in the surf zone. For the Coastal Flood
Advisory, one to two feet of inundation above ground level
expected in low- lying areas near shorelines and tidal
waterways.
* WHERE...Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties.
* WHEN...For the High Surf Advisory, until 6 AM EST Monday. For
the Coastal Flood Advisory, from 7 AM this morning to noon EDT
today.
* IMPACTS...Causeways to and from local beaches may begin to see
flooding. Low-lying roads and locations bordering the
Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks will see minor

.SYNOPSIS...
An area of low pressure will bring increasing rain chances
tonight. Moderate to heavy rainfall will develop on Saturday as
the low moves northward along the coast. Strong winds are
expected with this system, especially along the immediate
coastline and offshore. Coastal flooding and beach erosion will
occur during high tides through the weekend. Dry weather will
return next week with a warming trend.

NC and the lower Cape Fear River including downtown Wilmington,
where Minor Flooding is likely Saturday morning. A Coastal
Flood Watch remains for coastal SC where latest forecast calls
for right near Moderate Flooding thresholds.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/...
Low pressure moving out of the Gulf of Mexico and crossing
Florida. This system will turn up the coast and bring nor'easter
conditions locally later Saturday and Saturday night. Not so
much because the system deepens considerably but because the
high maintains itself so well over land that a very strong
pressure gradient develops along the coast and offshore. This
high will serve as a surface to be overrun by strong onshore
winds resulting in isentropic upglide that will focus moderate
to heavy rain along the immediate coast with lighter amounts
inland, possibly with quite a sharp gradient. Wind gust
potential along the immediate coast is an interesting forecast
challenge as two main forces appear to be in conflict. NE 925mb
winds will handily accelerate into the 50-55 kt range (58-63
mph). The argument against such winds reaching the surface are
stability- based. But since these winds max out at a time when
heavy rain may overcome such stability forces future forecasts
may have to continue today's trend in depicting higher wind
speeds. Complicating the matter is the very wide array of model
solutions regarding the track of the low centers. Future model
runs may iron out these uncertainties. Rain should still be
falling area-wide by the end of the period but diminishing in
intensity rapidly.

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY NIGHT THROUGH MONDAY NIGHT/...
Deepening coastal low will be located just offshore of Cape
Fear on Sunday morning. We should be just beyond the peak of our
heaviest rain and strongest winds during the event. Current
forecast shows winds over land 20-25 mph with gusts up to 40
mph. Highest wind speeds will be confined to the immediate
coastline. The elevated forecast over guidance is based on
soundings showing elevated winds at 50 knots at the base of the
thermal inversion near 1,500 ft AGL. Conditions will slowly
improve throughout the day, but showers and strong winds should
continue through Sunday afternoon, gusts still 25-30 mph along
the coast by Sunday evening. Temperatures in the upper 50s.
Storm total rainfall for the event has been nudged upward given
the latest guidance showing the potential for rainfall along the
immediate coast to total over 1 inch at 80-90% and greater than
2 inches at 60-70%. Current forecast shows 2-3" along the
coast, mainly southeastern NC. Areas along I-95 should expect
around an inch of storm total QPF. Low pressure exits the region
on Sunday night with high pressure building into the area on
Monday. Breezy as the gradient remains compressed. Winds not
nearly as strong as the 2 previous days, still northerly at
10-15 mph with gusts to 20-25 mph. Cold advection on the lee
side of the system should bring temperatures into the lower 40s,
upper 30s inland by Monday morning. Sunshine returns on Monday
with the exiting low and dry air moving into the area. Highs in
the mid to upper 60s. Winds finally subside on Monday night with
the potential for good radiational cooling as high pressure
moves overhead. Overnight lows in the lower 40s with upper 30s
possible along and west of I-95.

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...
Quiet weather continues through Thursday with high pressure
still in place. Zonal flow aloft and a moderating air mass keep
temperatures near normal or slightly above. Highs in the mid 70s
each afternoon. Overnight lows in the low 40s Tuesday morning
will begin to increase with returning low-level moisture each
morning thereafter. High pressure pulls out of the area on
Thursday evening with southerly flow returning and temperatures
continuing to moderate. A cold front will approach the area at
the end of next week with rain chances returning. Overnight lows
in the upper 50s Friday morning.

.AVIATION /06Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Complex and strong Atlantic low to affect the area terminals
thruout this period. Conditions will start off VFR and will
slowly deteriorate thruout this 24 hr fcst period. VFR to
extend into daylight Sat morning. Cloud bases mainly above
12k ft thru daybreak will slowly lower through Sat morning,
reaching MVFR midday across the SC terminals, and during the
aftn for the NC terminals. Look for IFR to eventually blanket
all terminals by or during Sat evening and beyond from ceilings
and vsby from light to moderate rain and fog. Steady NE winds
10-20 kt this morning will increase to 15 to 25 kt by this aftn
and continue thru the evening. Gusts late this aftn and evening
will range up to 25+ kt across the inland terminals and up to
35+ kt across the coastal terminals.
Extended Outlook...Coastal low pressure will result in MVFR to
IFR conditions overnight Sat into Sun morning. The highest
potential for flight restrictions and stronger winds will be
at the coastal terminals. VFR is expected Sun evening through
Wed with gusty but slowly abating N-NE winds continuing into
Mon.

.MARINE...
Through Saturday night... Conditions to deteriorate overnight
as low pressure crossing Florida turns up the coast. Gale force
wind gusts to spread south to north across the waters as the
pressure gradient pinches between the very slow moving low and
high pressure over land. Gale force winds and treacherous seas
(some 10+ft NC zones) will continue through the period due to
the slow movement of the system.
Sunday through Wednesday... Gale conditions could continue
through Sunday and into Sunday night with north winds 25-30
knots and gusts up to 40 knots. Seas 6-9 feet, higher beyond 20
nm. Gradient finally starts to relax late Sunday night into
Monday with the decreasing gales. Low pressure exiting the
region and high pressure building into the area will maintain
northerly winds 20-25 knots into early Monday. High pressure
works into the area late Monday into Tuesday with continued
improvement expected. Small Craft conditions currently expected
to diminish by Tuesday morning.

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING...
NE surge paired with new moon-induced high astronomical tides
to keep long fused coastal flooding event ongoing. Up til now
only morning high tides have met advisory criteria but SC zones
this evening paving the way for the smaller of the two high
tides to do so and this should last through the weekend.
Tomorrow and Sunday's high tides to be the largest, the latter
possibly getting a boost from rainfall but more uncertainty
there. Saturday morning however even before the rain becomes
very heavy could very well be the largest seen for some time. SC
beaches will meet moderate flood criteria and a Coastal Flood
Watch has been raised. Our forecast of 8.5' at 9 am will be the
5th highest as far as historic crests. North of Cape Fear
coastal flooding is a bit harder to come by, especially
watch/warning criteria. Not to be outdone however though still
advisory level our Wrightsville beach forecast of 7.7' will not
only be the fourth highest on record but also the highest
outside of a hurricane, the top three spots held by Hazel, Fran,
and Florence.
