Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Wichita KS
256 PM CDT Mon Aug 23 2021

.SHORT TERM...(This evening through Thursday night)
Issued at 256 PM CDT Mon Aug 23 2021

Main challenge/concern is the more intense heat and humidity
combo the next few days across the area. Center of the upper ridge
and heat dome will build northward into Kansas through mid-week.
It appears a bit more southwesterly flow from the high Plains and
mixing in the afternoon will allow for lower dew points across
western portions of central and south central Kansas. So despite
hotter temperatures, the heat indices may be closer to the actual
air temperature. Not so for locations along/east of the I-135
corridor and after inter-office collaboration, plan to extend the
heat advisory in time and space through Tuesday. The heat looks
unabated through mid-week under the upper ridge over the area. It
is quite likely that the heat advisory may be extended or even
upgraded to a warning for parts of the area, depending on the
expected surface dew point forecast.

.LONG TERM...(Friday through Monday)
Issued at 256 PM CDT Mon Aug 23 2021

There is some hope for tempered cooling or "less hot" temperatures
sometime over the weekend, as a series of more progressive upper
trofs move from the northwest across the north central conus. This
may allow for a cold front to slip southward into and across
Kansas though maybe not until Sunday or Monday and also bringing
precip chances as well.

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Tuesday afternoon)
Issued at 1228 PM CDT Mon Aug 23 2021

Main aviation concern will be some wind shear tonight.

Currently have upper trough digging over the Pacific Northwest
with southwest upper flow extending from the Desert Southwest
through the Plains. Confidence is high in VFR conditions
continuing across the area through the next 24 hours. The only
concern will be some low level wind shear tonight with southwest
winds by around 2,000ft in the 40-45kt range. Gusty southwest
winds will be in place Tue with many sites gusting over 30 mph.
