Area forecast discussion, Aug 22, 2:34 PM CDT, 8 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wichita KS 234 PM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021 .SHORT TERM...(This evening through Wednesday night) Issued at 231 PM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021 Bottom line up front: A slim chance of a late afternoon or early evening storm along and north of Interstate 70. Then a return of very warm temperatures for most of work week. Low level moisture transport and warm advection led a few isolated showers across the Flint Hills today, but the main story for the afternoon will be a return of very warm and breezy conditions. Some upslope flow has led to some instability pooling across NW KS this afternoon, which may lead to a few showers/storms for areas NW of the forecast area late this afternoon. There is a slim chance that an isolated storm may develop near KRSL, or points just to the NW of Russell Co, so will leave a slight pop in for the late afternoon for this chance. Think most of the convection that develops over NW KS will stay north of I-70 and central KS. SW flow and a lee side trough has reestablished itself along the front range. This will lead to very warm and breezy conditions for Monday through Wed, as convective chances shift back north into Neb. 1000-850h partial thickness values suggest max temps will climb back into the mid to upper 90s for Mon and the upper 90s to near 100 for Tue/Wed. The breezy conditions will help surface dewpoints mix out for the afternoon hours in most locations, keeping Wet Bulb Globe Temps (WBGT) and heat index values below heat advisory values. But I am concerned that SE KS will not mix out as well, with Heat index values possibly climbing to 105 or 106. So have decided to go with a heat advisory for at least Mon. Depending on if the surface dewpoints mix out on Mon, I could see the Heat advisory extended into Tue and Wed as well with later updates. Most of the convective chances will stay well north of the forecast area through Wed. Could see some convection try to get going across NW KS on Tue evening, but as this convection moves east, it will run into warmer mid level temperatures, which will squash the convection as it moves into central KS. The general gist of the forecast will dry and very warm temperatures. Ketcham .LONG TERM...(Thursday through Sunday) Issued at 231 PM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021 The mid/upper ridge axis is progged to translate slowly eastward through the end of the week as a mean trough approaches from the west. This may result in a downward trend in temperatures toward the weekend and perhaps a subtle increase in pops as a surface trough axis becomes established across the high plains. Ketcham && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon) Issued at 1238 PM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021 VFR conditions are expected during the forecast valid period. A lee trough will strengthen some this afternoon/evening while remaining in place through Monday. Southerly gusts of 20-27 knots are expected this afternoon along/west of I-135, then diminishing this evening. Marginal low- level wind shear possible late tonight at RSL, SLN, GBD terminals with a southwesterly low-level jet. Otherwise, southerly surface winds will increase and become gusty again around midday Monday. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
