.SHORT TERM...(Today through Friday night)

Key Message:  A historic extreme wind event and extreme to possibly
catastrophic fire danger is set to occur today. High Wind and Red
Flag Warnings are in effect for north and south-central Kansas.

Southerly flow will usher in low level moisture return this morning
over central, southern, and southeastern Kansas. Should see cloud
cover linger over southeast Kansas today with the continued moisture
return. There will be a chance for severe storms this evening over
extreme southeast Kansas, however a very strong elevated mixed layer
will likely put a cap on any storm that attempts to grow vertical.

An absolutely extraordinary low level jet will set up over our area
today. Very warm temperatures in combination with extremely dry
conditions will allow for winds to mix down. ECMWF is showing 850mb
winds of 70 to 80 knots across our area and 700mb winds of 80 to 90
knots. Can't rule out 60 to 70 knot gusts for areas that mix out
well, particularly in north-central Kansas. Along with the winds
areas west of the Kansas Turnpike may see reduced visibilities due
to blow dust due to how dry it's been over the last month.

Things quiet down tomorrow behind the front with cooler temperatures
in place. Tomorrow and Friday will feel more seasonal but highs will
still be above average for this time of year. Could see some
moisture return tomorrow night into Friday that leads to light rain
over southeast Kansas.

.LONG TERM...(Saturday through Tuesday)

Run to run consistency has been poor over the past few runs, but the
models seem to be in fairly good unison with changes in the extended
range. Trend today has been for a more zonal to slightly ridged
pattern for us towards the end of the weekend and start of the week.
This would keep temperatures above average, but nothing like what
we've seen the last week or so.

Very high winds and blowing dust will cause problems across the
region today. KRSL, KGBD and KSLN are the most likely to have
significant issues with the dust with visibilities likely to drop
below 1 mile at times this afternoon. Winds will also be an issue
with KCNU is the most likely terminal to avoid this higher winds.
KICT, KHUT are likely to see gusts approach 55kts while KSLN, KRSL
and KGBD likely to see gusts up to 60-65kts this afternoon. After
00Z, the winds will die off with the gusty winds ending after 06Z
tonight.

.FIRE WEATHER...
Issued at 254 AM CST Wed Dec 15 2021

An extreme to potentially catastrophic fire weather day is expected
today. Strong damaging winds will be accompanied with very warm
temperatures and very dry RH values into the teens and mid 20s west
of the Kansas Turnpike behind a dryline that will progress through
the region this afternoon. Fire weather values are maxing out over
north-central and central Kansas where all fire parameters are
present and in abundance. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for these
regions for most of the daytime hours today.

The progression of the dryline will determine how high the fire
danger will be for southeast Kansas. Due to how dry it's been and
how strong the system looks to be, we could see the dryline progress
faster than expected. In that case the potential for stronger winds
would progress east as well. Ahead of the dryline cloud cover will
likely remain, keeping winds and the fire danger down some. For now
we have decided to downgrade the Fire Watch for our two southeastern
rows of counties due to uncertainty in the position of the dry
line.

A high wind warning has been issued for much of central and south
central Kansas today. Damaging winds with gusts to around 70 mph
will be possible, with the strongest winds across portions of
